Newcastle were initially linked with Vasco da Gama midfielder Andrey Santos in early September. At the time, reports had surfaced claiming an inquiry was made for the teenager earlier in the summer.
Santos had emerged as one of the Brazilian club’s brightest talents in his first full season in the first team. He ended his breakout campaign with 36 appearances and 8 goals while pulling the strings from the midfield.
Links to the young playmaker have not gone away despite other young targets also hitting the headlines. One of those is Velez Sarsfield’s Maximo Perrone, who is seen as a cheaper alternative to the pricey Santos.
The Northern Echo is now reporting that Newcastle are preparing to make their move for the talented Santos in the winter window. While the teenager recently signed a new contract until 2027, the expectation is he will head to Europe at some point next year.
Barcelona are also in the mix for a potential summer bid but could struggle with an acceptable offer due to their financial woes. The Brazilian U20 international’s valuation exceeds £20m with Newcastle hoping to reach an incentive-laden agreement with the Brazilian club.
The report also states that should Newcastle land Santos, he would not be loaned out but rather given time to settle in the North East. Interestingly, Santos recently cited Bruno Guimaraes was one of his inspirations stating:
“I really like Casemiro, Bruno Guimarães, and Thiago Alcântara. These guys are phenomenal, I look up to them a lot – declared the number 8.”
Landing Santos in January would be a semi-coup. Their director Paulo Bracks has been vocal about keeping his prized asset around for as long as possible. Though he didn’t rule out a sale next year should an appropriate offer come in.
This is what Bracks said in September shortly after Newcastle’s interest emerged:
“Vasco’s contracts will be stronger and stronger. There is no proposal on the table. Many people approached him. A lot of people who shouldn’t, by the way. Andrey is a Vasco player, with a secure contract. If there is a possibility to negotiate, we will. But not this year.”

Comment #41On a side bit of info I just want to say that Snow White wasn’t the goodie two shoes she was made out to be.
She allegedly ran a syndicate of 7 dwarfs who were a collection of murderers and thieves.
They were pretty democratic though as they all started at the bottom!

In that situation, all the players run towards the goalkeeper, he should be expecting virtually everyone running towards him in or around the trajectory of the ball.
I doubt he was unsighted and no one touched the ball, it was goalie error and should have been allowed.

Interesting, and a very good point
I thought the keeper went one way (anticipating the touch) and was wrong footed because of it…..hence interference
It’s a good discussion though

Comment #50Belgium getting another lucky offside decision going their way. Luck will only get them so far in this World Cup.
That said, being in the goalkeeper’s union I’m definitely in agreement that the keeper was unsighted and that was rightfully chalked off (cough cough).

Comment #53Fenham I think your earlier quiz for Loony Lesh might not have been totally fair- You should have asked a few more questions that he may answer correctly.
So to start with a Toon question for him
Q What colours do Newcastle United play in (home strip)
Then some he might get:-
Name all the people in this painting of the Last Supper.

No wind at all and the sand was immaculate- no debris at all. With the back drop of the castle must be the top beach in the country.

Comment #65Belgium remind me of Holland in the 80’s/90’s (hedging my bets) Great players, can’t play as team, won nowt.
Plus they are way too slow in almost everything (very like England) gives the defence loads of time to adjust and prepare for anything.

It’s definitely been an unpredictable tournament so far, which is making it a good watch. We could see some interesting match ups in the knock-out phases. Certainly making the lack of league games less of a miss.
