Newcastle were initially linked with Vasco da Gama midfielder Andrey Santos in early September. At the time, reports had surfaced claiming an inquiry was made for the teenager earlier in the summer.
Santos had emerged as one of the Brazilian club’s brightest talents in his first full season in the first team. He ended his breakout campaign with 36 appearances and 8 goals while pulling the strings from the midfield.
Links to the young playmaker have not gone away despite other young targets also hitting the headlines. One of those is Velez Sarsfield’s Maximo Perrone, who is seen as a cheaper alternative to the pricey Santos.
The Northern Echo is now reporting that Newcastle are preparing to make their move for the talented Santos in the winter window. While the teenager recently signed a new contract until 2027, the expectation is he will head to Europe at some point next year.
Barcelona are also in the mix for a potential summer bid but could struggle with an acceptable offer due to their financial woes. The Brazilian U20 international’s valuation exceeds £20m with Newcastle hoping to reach an incentive-laden agreement with the Brazilian club.
The report also states that should Newcastle land Santos, he would not be loaned out but rather given time to settle in the North East. Interestingly, Santos recently cited Bruno Guimaraes was one of his inspirations stating:
“I really like Casemiro, Bruno Guimarães, and Thiago Alcântara. These guys are phenomenal, I look up to them a lot – declared the number 8.”
Landing Santos in January would be a semi-coup. Their director Paulo Bracks has been vocal about keeping his prized asset around for as long as possible. Though he didn’t rule out a sale next year should an appropriate offer come in.
This is what Bracks said in September shortly after Newcastle’s interest emerged:
“Vasco’s contracts will be stronger and stronger. There is no proposal on the table. Many people approached him. A lot of people who shouldn’t, by the way. Andrey is a Vasco player, with a secure contract. If there is a possibility to negotiate, we will. But not this year.”

The Dark was a strange plot but I thought that the ending tied up a lot of loose ends.
