Shearer Backs Magpie For Shock Start On Tuesday

England are still in an excellent position in Group B despite their underwhelming scoreless draw against The United States. Both teams failed to take advantage of a handful of golden chances to break the deadlock.

Kieran Trippier again played the entire match though Callum Wilson was an unused substitute despite England’s lack of prowess in front of the net. The Newcastle striker set up Jack Grealish in the win over Iran, a match that went more swimmingly for the English.

England boss Gareth Southgate stuck with striker Harry Kane, who had few opportunities while shanking a header in the box in the dying minutes. Southgate opted to replace Raheem Sterling and Bukayo Saka with Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford with Grealish making an impact again.

Next up for England are Wales on Tuesday. Just a draw is needed to ensure a place in the knockout stages while The United States must defeat Iran to advance. Southgate named an unchanged side against the Americans but may switch things up against the Welsh.

In fact, Magpie legend Alan Shearer suspects Wilson could get the start on Tuesday to rest Kane for the knockout rounds. Here is what Alan said as published in The Chronicle:

“After his first two games at the last World Cup, Harry Kane had scored five goals. At the same stage of this tournament, he has not had a shot on target.

“I am not overly concerned about that statistic, because we know the provider role Harry plays for this England team even when he is not scoring himself, but watching him against the United States it was clear something wasn’t right.

“He came through that scare about his ankle before the US game but, after playing a big part in an impressive team performance in the Iran game with two assists, he looked very tired and very leggy to me. It might be time to think about getting him right for the knockout stages, and I have a sneaky feeling Callum Wilson might come in to face Wales on Tuesday instead.

“England need to freshen things up anyway, to get the feel-good factor back after the disappointment of our draw with the US, and restore a bit of confidence. I can understand why Gareth Southgate stuck with the same team that had stuck six goals past Iran but, after that, I can’t see him doing the same again in our final game in Group B.”

After an excellent performance against Iran, England were often listless against the States. Even the eminent Trippier seemed off his game. However despite Alan’s assertions, it would still be a shock if Kane was not in Southgate’s starting eleven on Tuesday.

Southgateosaurus should start Wilson and Grealish and give Treacle (I like that nickname, well done whoever it was coined it) a rest!

Narcissists generally love to be centre stage and having no sense of self-awareness, they don’t even see that they’re having the pi$$ taken out of ’em and they laugh at it.

Not having been part of or close to that group, there were some characters among that group. I heard a tale of one of ’em having been barred from The County, asked whether he could be allowed back if he had ‘a week on the Scotch [ale].

Take no notice of the lazy skivers crazed with dope smoking, or ya loony leftoids -zombified Manchurian candidates or ya plain and simple England haters (because we qualified).

Ya late arrivals on the blog this morning were not at Church asking for forgiveness about their hate but have just awoken from their intoxication from distant hovels or gutters somewhere.

Come on England. You can do it.

Southgate will play his best team on paper regardless of form.

Probably means play for a draw with the usual suspects.

The next game is his only chance to change it up.

Likelyhood – slim to no chance.
