The confirmation of Paul Midgley as the new Head of Youth Recruitment could be imminent. Both Craig Hope and Fabrizio Romano, who broke the news over the weekend are stating that Midgley’s move to Newcastle is a done deal.
Paul Midgley will start work at Newcastle this week, joining from Man City in academy recruitment role. More scouting appointments expected across all levels of club #nufc

Paul Midgley to Newcastle, done and confirmed. ????? #NUFC https://t.co/4dg6goicEJ
— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) November 28, 2022
Midgley held a similar position with Leeds prior to his arrival at Manchester City as a northern regional scout in August. At Leeds, he was responsible for the recruitment of players aged 12 to 16.
Judging by the young talent at Elland Road, Midgley could be a monumental appointment for Newcastle United. The club are determined to add quality to the Academy with a number of teenagers linked with January moves.
Australian international Garang Kuol will join in January after his signing was confirmed during the September international break. Kuol has been outstanding for Central Coast Mariners as he eyes another opportunity with Australia in their final group match against Denmark on Wednesday.
Yesterday, The NUFC Women defeated the Barnsely Women 2-1 in a second-half comeback in the Women’s FA Cup. The highlights of the cup win can be seen in the YouTube video below.

Comment #81I am more surprised Schar is not getting a game than Bruno. Bruno is not a regular for Brazil. Schar more often than not has been for the Swiss though. Once neither started the first game I didn’t expect either to start tonight.

Comment #82The best managers in the world have talked about selecting the best team and not the best 11 individuals.

Comment #84Taco – Schar not starting DOES surprise me. I thought he was a regular starter for Switzerland (but I could be wrong) and he’s been playing regularly for us in the PL obviously.
I can only imagine that it’s something to do with style of play? Maybe the manager sees that the 2 starting centre backs play better together than either of them playing alongside Schar.

Comment #87TDS; Wesley Fofana isn’t in the French squad. Youssouf Fofana, who plays for Monaco, is.
Ake and Laporte have both played plenty of football this season, so far, when Champions League appearances are factored in. Laporte has also been recovering from injury.
I would also say that Man City are a bit of an anomaly due to the depth of their squad and the rotation policy of the manager.
Maguire has not been rotated.

Comment #88The plus side of our players not playing is that they are far less likely to get injured.
Even before the first game the only ones I thought would likely get significant game time were Tripps and Schar and so far I have been wrong about one them.

Comment #92I’d rather our players did play, it would do their general well being lots of good playing in a world cup in more than just a bit part role.

Comment #94Novo – ok, I must have got my Fofanas wrong then! 🙂
So which is it? You think they should 100% select on club form or they should mostly select on club form but not if they play for a top club like Man City?
Maguire has not been rotated but when you consider the relevant factors for selecting players for an international tournament, he still rates highly:
– club form
– leadership skills
– international experience
– European competition experience
– temperament
– ability to play the way the manager wants to
– familiarity with the other players

Comment #96There have been some shite games in this WC mind and I miss two of the best yet today,it seems.
As for the fantasy mularkey, what a cruel mistress she is.
Japan nailed on certs to kick the Jarmins oot (so I triple up on the Japs) then the impossible happens,CRC one shot on target in the whole comp and look what happens (lol)
I think the biggest winners up to now, have to be the bookies. (sad)

Comment #98I’m with Raj. I’d rather see our players play even if it does create a risk of injury. It’s a good sign of a top club when you have multiple international players playing at a World Cup.

Comment #100TDS; I think that Maguire deserves to be in the squad taking everything in to account. I would have left Coady out and taken Burn based on club form.
Southgate has not used the summer internationals to give others a decent chance. Toney being the obvious example.
There is more room experiment with this tournament because of the size of the squads.

Comment #102England have a problem moving forward from this tournament. We have some exciting attacking talent and midfielders. We’re well covered at fullback but where are the young central defenders?

Comment #103I didnt say that I prefer our players not to play I just said what the plus side is.
Of course it is great advert for NUFC to have loads of players playing and playing very well but at the same time I don’t get upset it they don’t.
Without checking the stats (so I could be wrong) I think we have more NUFC players at this WC than the last one which is progress in itself.

Comment #104As much as it pains me to say this,Slab heed was my MOM tother night.
That fact in itself (I think) highlights Soothgate’s conservative approach to football.
Any football not just tournament footy..
Mind it looks like Tite is of the same belief, going off the first half anyway.

Comment #109Novo – Based on club form, Burn clearly deserved to go. But he’s a 30 year old uncapped centre back with no experience playing in the Champions League or Europa League. Much as I wanted to see him go as a Toon player, I don’t think it would have been the best decision. Coady has a bunch of caps so is familiar with the squad and he’s been playing well too. I doubt there are many 30 year old centre halves who get their first cap in a major tournament.
