Bruno Guimaraes made his World Cup debut for Brazil in their 1-0 win over Fabian Schar’s Switzerland yesterday. The midfielder came on in the 58th minute for Manchester United’s Fred.
It was another Man United midfielder who clinched the win as Casemiro’s wonderful finish in the 83rd minute resigned the Swiss to defeat. Schar again was an unused substitute but he did swap jerseys with his Magpie teammate after the match.

Brazil have qualified for the knockout stages while Switzerland face Serbia on Friday to stake their claim for the next phase. The Swiss advance with a win and can even get through with a draw if Brazil defeats Cameroon.
England have their final match this evening. They must avoid losing to Wales by four goals or more to advance. The USA must defeat Iran to continue in the tournament. A draw is likely enough for the Iranians to get through.
The Chronicle is reporting that Gareth Southgate will make at least two changes today. He’s named an unchanged eleven in the first two matches. However, there are murmurs that Kyle Walker and Jordan Henderson will be brought into the starting eleven.
The report suggests Jude Bellingham will make way for Henderson with Walker likely in for Kieran Trippier. With a trip to the next round all but guaranteed, not risking Trippier will be welcomed news for Newcastle fans.

I used to hide myself in a tree during a trip in Morocco, but it was to escape a bunch of boars and wild dogs fighting each others!

Comment #58If the rumours about the England team for tonight are correct, then it appears knacker Southgate is playing to not get beat again!!!!
There are a lot of pundits, press and a few on here that say “he knows how to negotiate the early stages of a competition like this” – OK, I accept that, but only up to a point.
Many very good managers over the years have waxed lyrical about the positive effect on the confidence of players when they are “winning games”.
Surely, it would be much more sensible in these preliminary rounds to go out and stuff the opposition, this gaining massive confidence within the squad and equally important get into the winning habit. Southgate doesn’t see this – he always plays safety 1st football and it’s bloody boring.
Assume you’re a player – would you rather be in the Brazil squad that’s gone 14 International games without defeat, or in the England squad who only have 1 x decent result (against Iran) in the last 6 or 7 games?
As you can see his approach pees me off hugely and unlike some I don’t regard getting to final or semi final a success (sure it’s not total failure) only winning is a success and a bit like NUFC, England have won nowt since 1966, and they won’t this time either unless Southgate adopts an Eddy Howe attitude of trying to win every game.

Sorry to here about your Auntie, regretably when you get to our age most of our Aunts and Uncles have passed on.
They take a lot of knowledge with them re. other relations, I did the Ancestary DNA thingy and would love to know more about my family tree but as most of my Aunts had very large familly’s I doubt if I could ever hope to track them all down!

Comment #64It’s nuts to suggest that only winning the World Cup is a success. There are a lot of good teams in the World Cup and you’d have to say that several have a better chance of winning than us (I’d put Brazil, Argentina, France & Spain above us for sure and maybe Germany too).
I’d say that our squad would mean getting to the quarter finals would be about par and getting to the semi finals would be above par. Why do so many people seem to think in binary terms? Winning the World Cup = Success. Not winning the World Cup = Failure?

I think (for me) it depends on the outlook. Are we looking for improvements on the last WC? If so, then coming third or getting to the final is a success.
If it’s an improvement on our last performance at a major tournament then it would be winning this one since we reached the final of the Euros.
I go into every major tournament expecting nothing from England, as they can’t disappoint me that way. I learned that a long time ago.

Comment #70That actor Michael Sheen (Welsh knacker) was trying to G up the Welsh players with a rousing anti- English speech.
They were like mad dogs snarling in a pit.
They need to be walloped.
