Over the weekend, it was reported that Newcastle have identified Vasco da Gama midfielder Andrey Santos as the top target for the winter window. The Northern Echo claimed the Magpies were set to make their move after months of links to the playmaker.
However, Sport Witness is citing a report from France’s Le10Sport that Santos is close to committing to Chelsea, who seem to have come out of the blue for the talented teen. Barcelona was Newcastle’s closest competitor according to recent reports.
The French outlet’s angle on their report is that Chelsea have edged not only Newcastle and Barcelona but also PSG for Santos. There is some discrepancy in the reporting as the price quoted is just €15m which is around half of his previously reported valuation.
If this report is accurate, with considerable emphasis on the ‘if’, Newcastle have other budding stars on the shortlist. There are continual reports that Velez Sarsfield playmaker Maximo Perrone is high on the wishlist.
The Argentine club’s sporting director is none other than former Magpie Christian Bassedas, who roamed the midfield at St. James’ Park in the early 2000s. Newcastle World recently reported that Bassedas was on Tyneside to tie up a deal for Perrone. Though the claim arose from a podcast in Argentina.
Whether it’s Santos, Perrone, or another young gem, Newcastle are determined to add youthful quality to the ranks in January. Garang Kuol’s move becomes official while links to right-backs Harrison Ashby and Cody Drameh refuse to dry up.

Comment #241Game of 2 halves. I was just about to post “get Rashford off now and being Wilson on” just as I was about to post he scores that free kick. He had a decent second half crap first.
Still think England have so much to offer than what they’ve delivered so far. We need to get on the front foot a lot more, I’d play Kane behind either Rashford or Wilson. He plays to deep for a No9.
Senegal will be a tough game make no doubt about it, very creative and full of strength and energy. Will be a hard game. But we have enough to beat them

Put Kane in midfield and Wilson up front if they want to press. Kane does not do the press

Comment #244USA through to the last 16 also, a lot of emotional tension in that second half. Carter Vickers of Celtic played very well at the heart of the USA defence.

Comment #246Not bad hey? Almost as if Southgate knows what he’s doing. 9 goals, 7 points, qualified easily, Kane has 3 assists, Rashford 3 goals, defence looks solid. Love it.
Bring on Senegal on Sunday!

Our main concern as fans, has surely to be, what do we do with Slabheed?
Coady perhaps?

Comment #250Are people for real?? Maguire has played well and proves he’s excellent in international football, Kane has 3 assists and he’s scored bucketloads in the PL this season, Henderson had a solid game too. Were people watching the game to have criticisms of any of those players?

They suffered at the end, but Iran really started to play too late to hope something.

Totally agree Magic.
The results this World Cup seem to have more head scratching moments. They beat (team) they lost to (team).

You are a proper poster, a decent poster that talk’s football topics mainly. Not like that loonie lefty Lesh that only comes on here to target good football folk. He is a disgrace to the blog.
Calling people out as not allowed to have an opinion as in his mind a poster has not posted for a length of time to be allowed to post an opinion so therefore doesn’t have a right. That’s enough to chase new posters away from a football blog who want to come on here to talk football matters…All he does is spout toxic political shite. Never talks football and is nearly as toxic as that fisherman from Monster.
You are a good poster and bring a lot to the blog…Unlike the lefty loonie man that is a hater who IMO brings absolute zilch of positive energy or football chat or even sport chat to the NUFC Blog (which is desperately needed) This scroat of a man is nothing but a bore and is so tiresome With his relentless shitehousery, Lefty political and negativity.

Maguire has hardly ever let England down in the past, you need to look at the fixtures he’s played in to put it in perspective.
Since he’s been an England regular our qualifying matches have been a joke.
Moldova et al etc..
If he starts against France it will be a bloodbath,IMO obviously..
And IMO he’s pretty shite. If it was offered to Man U as a straight swap for say Coady or Stones. You would hear the hand being taken off, even from deepest down south, Smiley emoji… My emoji generator isn’t working, have they changed them?

Comment #262Assassins – I was looking at SBR’s record in Italia 90. Drew against Ireland and the Netherlands, then scraped past Egypt 1-0 to get through the group. Plenty of teams have lost or drawn against poorer teams in the group stages and got onto the semi final, final, or even won it overall. It’s just football, every team can have a poor game and every dog has its day.

Comment #268Ash – Stones and Maguire are similar. Don’t forget that it was Stones getting pelters a few years ago for making a few mistakes. You’re way off base with Coady though, if top teams wanted him in the summer he wouldn’t have moved to Everton would he?
I’ll never understand why there’s always an England player who is the current figure of fun.

Comment #273Assassins – it’s what makes football exciting for me. Would be pretty bloody dull if the best teams always won stuff. Leicester won the PL, Denmark & Greece won the Euros, and Sunderland got promoted last season…miracles can happen to the lesser teams!
It is true…you never know, Senegal could be a surprise package and win another match or two. I still think we’ll be massive favourites but funny things can happen…

Comment #274This WC has been a strange one where many weaker nations have upped their game and closed the gap. This WC could quite easily be the tournament where it’s the underdogs year.
It’s a breath of fresh air to see the gap close. As in the EPL there are no easy games now.

Comment #275On a completely different stage left, two things will make me happy this World Cup.
One: Wilson gets his goal and Trips (free kick).
Two: When it’s over and I don’t have to use this damn FIFA World Cup Fantasy and it’s damn errors.
Ok, add on making three, End of World Cup and in Jan we get Maddison.

Comment #277Ash – he might not suit the way the new manager wants to play. I remember Stones being out of favour for a while at Man City but he managed to get back into the team.
Will find out in January whether Maguire stays and competes for his place under the new manager or leaves. I still think he’s a very good player, albeit been below par for Man Utd for a while. Been solid for England though.
