Two Targets For Vulnerable Position Appear Destined For January Exits

In the week leading to the start of the World Cup, there was a report from The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards that Newcastle’s sudden surge up the Premier League table would not alter their approach to the winter window.

The report maintained that Newcastle would focus on adding strength in depth and only pursue a marquee signing should one of their top targets become available; generally a remote prospect in January.

However, Edwards did state that one position remains a priority to solidify. Eddie Howe and company will look to add a young right-back in the winter window to provide add cover for Kieran Trippier, who is currently getting plenty of action in this World Cup.

There are two clear favorites to end up at St. James’ Park as Trippier’s heir apparent – Leeds’ Cody Drameh and West Ham’s Harrison Ashby. Both are enduring difficult times at their current clubs and are expected to be jettisoned in January.

Ashby was a summer target with a deadline day move blocked by Hammers boss David Moyes. The right-back has made just three appearances this term and with his contract running out next month, has firmly rejected extending his West Ham stay.

The Scotland U21 international is almost certain to be available for a modest fee as West Ham will want something for their academy product rather than allowing him to leave for nothing in the summer. Newcastle’s interest appears likely to transcend to the winter.

Drameh’s situation at Elland Road has been similarly frustrating with first-team opportunities hard to come by. After a superb loan spell with Cardiff, the soon-to-be 21-year-old entered the summer with hopes of increased chances under Jesse Marsch.

However, his situation has deteriorated and he’s not made a matchday squad since making his lone start in the 5-2 defeat at Brentford in early September. He has since been demoted to playing with the U21s.

The Yorkshire Evening Post is reporting that Leeds will entertain offers for Drameh with Newcastle reportedly in contact with his representatives. His contract will have just 18 months left to run when the winter window opens.

It appears that Newcastle could have their pick of Ashby or Drameh, who’ll both be 21 when the window opens. With Howe short at right-back due to Emil Krafth’s knee injury and only Javier Manquillo in reserve, either would be a welcome addition to the ranks.

dazzler – this notion of “improvement” is a binary way of looking at things too. Every team is looking at ways to improve so it’s not just a matter of us improving and every other team standing still.

Similar to you, I go into every major tournament not expecting too much. I want England to entertain and I think getting out of the group stage is a minimum. But Italy didn’t even qualify and neither did nations like Sweden and Norway so we shouldn’t be too downhearted even if we go out early.

I dunno…I just don’t get it…some fans seem to just want to set themselves up for perpetual misery.

Everyone seems to be in good spirits, nice to see.

Apart from TDS of course who is scrolling thru posts looking for someone to disagree with. And clearly educate..

    Good old TDS.

By all accounts earlier reports of Henderson replacing Bellingham is false. Its the charlatan plodder Declan Slice who may get rested.

The handbrake to the team is hopefully being released. Foden for Mount and retaining Bellingham would be sweet.

Wales are a god awful team. Should be giving them a whooping.

Check – good effort trying to stir something up for no reason whatsoever. Why is it when people who agree with you post their opinion it’s just “freedom of speech” but when people who you disagree with post their opinion they’re doing something wrong? Seeing that a lot these days…

Just like accepting dross off Bruce, you accept failure and mediocrity off Southgate.

We have as good a squad as any team, try and win the thing.

Outplayed by USA. My god. Abysmal coaching and management, no excuses tonight to not press and play attacking football. Its a freebie. We are through

Although I dont see anything but an England win tonight. Wales are shocking.

I’ve lowered the Union Jack on my flag pole and exchanged it with the flag of St.George and fired my cannon in salute.
Neighbours came out and saluted the flag whilst standing to attention.

Just got the bunting to put up now.

Check – the point about the binary stuff is that I agree that we have virtually the same chance of winning as several other teams. But even if we consider that we have a similar chance of winning it to Brazil, Argentina, France, Spain, & Germany, that’s a 1 in 6 chance of winning. That’s best case odds.

100% I want England to try and win it, I can’t believe they’re thinking anything other than that either! Was poor against USA for sure but we didn’t lose. Italy aren’t even there, neither are Norway or Sweden, plus Germany and Argentina LOST to lesser opposition in the group stages.

How are we supposed to discuss things if we only respond to people we agree with? Would be pretty damn dull on here if we’re all saying the same thing and how much we like each other’s posts…

either they stop with the crap of passing the ball around both central defenders waiting for openings that hardly ever happen, id bring in philips for rice, wilson for kane because to me hes burned out and bring in rushford and madison, out goes rice, mount, kane and sterling

TDS I think your boys have a fine chance of winning it, although I sometimes think that the english team is better than it is. As so many have said, a more attacking coach would help. But serious talent. As I said before, Carlton Palmer doesnt seem that long ago!

My thinking (TDS) is not binary, it’s mostly quite simple. (Bit like me).

    (1) I prefer to see attacking football and teams trying to win.
    (2) I dislike negative, playing not to lose football and find it dull.
    (3) I’m not a huge football fan in that I’ll watch any game on telly. I’m quite selective and mostly watch the teams that play as in (1) above.
    (4) Football as well as being a competitive sport is also meant to be an entertainment. I don’t see (2) above as entertaining.
    (5) As a competitive sport, only the winners get the prizes, hence only winning is successful. Of course your not a failure if you come 2nd, but your not successful either. Colin Montgomery was a very successful golfer who won loads of competitions, but he’s not regarded as a big success because he never won a major.

The fact is, you can have a successful career in sports by earning oodles of money for you and your family yet never win owt. Most players of most sports fall into this category. It all depends on how you view success, making money or winning things.

I’ve never been a professional sportsman, but I had a successful career (making money) but never won a bloody thing in my life! 😆

As you can see from my opus @ #31, I’m so bloody happy supporting NUFC right now with Eddie’s “win every game” philosophy and the new owners backing him sensibly I’m over the bloody moon.

The only team I’ve always supported through good times and bad is Newcastle United. Everyone else – meh!

Munster – The problem with having a more attacking coach is that we need defensive solidity to allow our attacking players to express themselves. We don’t have to go far to see a perfect example of where this worked do we? Just look at what Howe has done at our club. January signings were a LB, RB, CB, DM, and a striker (the latter purely out of necessity as we had no other PL level and fit strikers). He then followed that up with a GK and another CB in the summer!

The signing of defensive players created more solidity in the squad and allowed our attacking players to play further forward and with more confidence. Look how many goals we’ve scored since!

I think we have a decent chance to win it but we’re weak in defence.

At the moment all the talk is about the likes of De Santos, Perrone, Drameh and Ashby – all apparently great young talents.
What worries me is if they can’t be accommodated on our bench are they going to be happy playing for our under 18’s or 21’s teams who are, being kind, barely acceptable.
It’s all well and good waiting to get into the first teams at Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea when you are turning out, successfully, with other talented youngsters but results below our first team are abysmal.
I appreciate that these teams will go on improving in the long run, thanks to our owners, but initially, until then, I can foresee problems.
