Two Targets For Vulnerable Position Appear Destined For January Exits

In the week leading to the start of the World Cup, there was a report from The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards that Newcastle’s sudden surge up the Premier League table would not alter their approach to the winter window.

The report maintained that Newcastle would focus on adding strength in depth and only pursue a marquee signing should one of their top targets become available; generally a remote prospect in January.

However, Edwards did state that one position remains a priority to solidify. Eddie Howe and company will look to add a young right-back in the winter window to provide add cover for Kieran Trippier, who is currently getting plenty of action in this World Cup.

There are two clear favorites to end up at St. James’ Park as Trippier’s heir apparent – Leeds’ Cody Drameh and West Ham’s Harrison Ashby. Both are enduring difficult times at their current clubs and are expected to be jettisoned in January.

Ashby was a summer target with a deadline day move blocked by Hammers boss David Moyes. The right-back has made just three appearances this term and with his contract running out next month, has firmly rejected extending his West Ham stay.

The Scotland U21 international is almost certain to be available for a modest fee as West Ham will want something for their academy product rather than allowing him to leave for nothing in the summer. Newcastle’s interest appears likely to transcend to the winter.

Drameh’s situation at Elland Road has been similarly frustrating with first-team opportunities hard to come by. After a superb loan spell with Cardiff, the soon-to-be 21-year-old entered the summer with hopes of increased chances under Jesse Marsch.

However, his situation has deteriorated and he’s not made a matchday squad since making his lone start in the 5-2 defeat at Brentford in early September. He has since been demoted to playing with the U21s.

The Yorkshire Evening Post is reporting that Leeds will entertain offers for Drameh with Newcastle reportedly in contact with his representatives. His contract will have just 18 months left to run when the winter window opens.

It appears that Newcastle could have their pick of Ashby or Drameh, who’ll both be 21 when the window opens. With Howe short at right-back due to Emil Krafth’s knee injury and only Javier Manquillo in reserve, either would be a welcome addition to the ranks.

Absolutely Rice will be top of the pops in pointless passes, sideways running yards and desperate tackles.

As I said earlier. Shearer went 12 games without scoring for England prior to Euro 96 and we all know what he did then. Kane is one of the best strikers in the world.

Check – vital to have a player who keeps the ball moving but check out that comparison. Look at his number of forward passes compared to Longstaff. I dare you, click on that link I posted and see the stats.

Stats mean bugger all unless there’s something at the end of it.

Most passes – could be all between midfield and defence or sideways. Easy to pass between your mates at the back “let’s get them stats up guys”.

Most stats lack context and without context they mean less than nowt. 😀

Check – that doesn’t cheer me up one tiny bit mate. Shit time of year for your car to need repairs! Mine cost an extra £170 at its MOT a couple of weeks ago but it’s been a bloody good car for me so I can’t really complain.

Kane is annoying plenty of my pals an all. Its like he can do what he wants.

Rooney did it backend of his career as we didn’t have ability to play ball up the pitch. Generally Capello being a boring pratt an all.

Benching him tonight might kick him up the arse too. Plus tests him if he’s still got a slight ankle niggle. Only positives in benching him tonight imo.

    TDS

Yes as his form in the 2 games so far has been shite. Bench him, rests his ankle, let’s him know he isn’t undroppable, let’s us see how the team plays with a different striker, gives plenty of minutes to someone like Wilson incase Kane gets injured. There’s literally no negatives to benching him tonight. He can always come off the bench if it needs changing.

Got to say all ya Welshies are not baduns. A Welsh lady singlehandedly captured a load of French soldiers in 1797. This was the last invasion of England. Welsh women wore scarlet dresses and very large black hats – the French thought they were British soldiers and surrendered.

Rice v Longstaff is a good comparison. Sean does well in a few areas but Rice batters him defensively, about matches him offensively and how’s this. Rice passes 28% forward and Longstaff 31%. Ok. But backwards? Rice 12% and Longstaff 18%. Rice has made twice as many passes as Longstaff and nearly twice as many forward passes too. Oh…and with a MUCH better passing accuracy (90% to 82%). It’s literally there as proof.

Adam – I’ve no problem with resting him if he needs a rest for fitness reasons or if it’s going to help him mentally in some way. Only Southgate knows if either of those are the case though. If he’s the kind of player who is better to keep playing then keep playing him. I’ve already said twice that Shearer went 12 games without scoring prior to Euro 96.

Kane is a good player but he looked well short against the USA. He missed must the training last week and will have had 3 days training before tonight’s match.
Hopefully it has sharpened him up.
I don’t believe the rhetoric that going for a scan on his ankle is standard practice.
    There is/was a problem.

I’d say Man U have a better squad on paper than NUFC but at the same time I can think of very few of their players that I would swap with ours in the same position. Casimero and Rushford maybe.

This thing is the league table does not lie. We are a better team.

I’d be delighted if Kane has a good game tonight, but I think it’s well worth trying with someone else up top. Let’s us see how we can do if Kane was to get injured in the knockout stages. Gives minutes to another striker to get them ready to step in if needed. Rests his ankle. Makes sense to me!

Taco – better team this season for sure. Better squad? Nope. There’s a bunch of Man Utd players I’d love in our squad but I wouldn’t actually replace any of our starting 11 the way they’re playing so far. They deserve to start! But Casemiro, Martinez, Antony, Eriksen, Fernandes, Rashford, and Varane are class players. De Gea and Shaw too come to think of it.

Would be delighted with those players in our squad but, as I said, I wouldn’t swap anyone right now. Any player coming into our squad is going to have to earn that starting spot, whether we’ve signed them from Man Utd, York City, or Juventus.

Most of the English plyers looked poor versus the US. Only players to come out of it with any credit were the defenders.
