Two Targets For Vulnerable Position Appear Destined For January Exits

In the week leading to the start of the World Cup, there was a report from The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards that Newcastle’s sudden surge up the Premier League table would not alter their approach to the winter window.

The report maintained that Newcastle would focus on adding strength in depth and only pursue a marquee signing should one of their top targets become available; generally a remote prospect in January.

However, Edwards did state that one position remains a priority to solidify. Eddie Howe and company will look to add a young right-back in the winter window to provide add cover for Kieran Trippier, who is currently getting plenty of action in this World Cup.

There are two clear favorites to end up at St. James’ Park as Trippier’s heir apparent – Leeds’ Cody Drameh and West Ham’s Harrison Ashby. Both are enduring difficult times at their current clubs and are expected to be jettisoned in January.

Ashby was a summer target with a deadline day move blocked by Hammers boss David Moyes. The right-back has made just three appearances this term and with his contract running out next month, has firmly rejected extending his West Ham stay.

The Scotland U21 international is almost certain to be available for a modest fee as West Ham will want something for their academy product rather than allowing him to leave for nothing in the summer. Newcastle’s interest appears likely to transcend to the winter.

Drameh’s situation at Elland Road has been similarly frustrating with first-team opportunities hard to come by. After a superb loan spell with Cardiff, the soon-to-be 21-year-old entered the summer with hopes of increased chances under Jesse Marsch.

However, his situation has deteriorated and he’s not made a matchday squad since making his lone start in the 5-2 defeat at Brentford in early September. He has since been demoted to playing with the U21s.

The Yorkshire Evening Post is reporting that Leeds will entertain offers for Drameh with Newcastle reportedly in contact with his representatives. His contract will have just 18 months left to run when the winter window opens.

It appears that Newcastle could have their pick of Ashby or Drameh, who’ll both be 21 when the window opens. With Howe short at right-back due to Emil Krafth’s knee injury and only Javier Manquillo in reserve, either would be a welcome addition to the ranks.

Anyone seen The Last Overland about an expedition in 1955 in a couple of Land Rovers from London to Singapore overland a book and film called The First Overland on YouTube, done by some Oxford and Cambridge students, but it’s a rerun using one of the original Land Rovers (Oxford, Cambridge was destroyed by fire) and was going to have one of the original drivers (now 87), but sadly he was hospitalised in Singapore, so his grandson did it instead, they started at Singapore and went to London.

I am a sucker for old Land Rovers, but even if you’re not it’s worth hunting out, just 4 episodes.

    Pug, Rashford for Murphy.

TDS, I was more thinking typical starting 11 thus far more than squad. In terms of squad there are possibly a couple more that you name that might be interesting.

Glad I picked the Senegal game to watch. Netherlands was always only going to go one way.

Henderson provides stability and leadership in the centre. I’ve absolutely no problem with him playing at all. Experience will be useful in this match and Henderson has bags of it. He’s not an exciting player but hopefully he allows others to play. Excited to see Foden get a chance.

Taco – starting 11 is a tough one as I don’t think any of ours deserves to be dropped the way they’re playing so far. Shaw is better than Targett but Howe is preferring a different sort of left back with Burn so far this season. Longstaff has been solid and I love Joelinton’s passion but both Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes are classy players when on form. Rashford on the left wing would be a very nice option to have too.

I’m definitely thinking in terms of their overall squad rather than just the first 11. First 11 I still think they’re better individually but we have the better team as it stands. Squad wise, they’re a long way ahead currently.

I would say Rashford not good enough for us going forward. De Gea a good back up for Pope, but would not accept that, Leaves Fernandez

I wouldn’t take B Fernades, don’t like his attitude. Not a player you want when things are going against you. A fairweather player imo.

If you’re going to be negative about any Man Utd players, just remember that despite their club being run terribly, having egotistical pricks like Ronaldo, and the ridiculous managerial merry go round, their last 5 league finishes have been 6th, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 2nd. Hardly terrible.

Still…I doubt we’ll sign any players from Man Utd in January. The good ones would cost too much money and the ones they want rid of aren’t worth us signing.
