Journalist Refutes Exit Claim While Providing Positive Fitness Update

There was a report earlier today that Jonjo Shelvey was close to joining Besiktas. The report originated from Turkish outlet Spor Arena which was very sparse on details other than an agreement was close.

The Mail’s Craig Hope has refuted the claim while providing some positive news on Shelvey’s recovery from his calf injury. Hope tweeted the following this afternoon suggesting Jonjo’s rehabilitation is progressing faster than initially expected:

Jonjo Shelvey going nowhere this month from what I understand. Nearing return to fitness & should be back playing within a few weeks.

Shelvey’s return to action could coincide with Bruno Guimaraes’s return from his ankle injury. It appears he may even be available for the West Ham match to kick off the month of February.

Newcastle are desperately short of numbers in the midfield which has made adding another in this window a priority. While Shelvey may not be leaving this month, a decision on his future will have to be made soon.

The 30-year-old is a handful of starts away from triggering an extension with his current deal expiring in the summer. Newcastle will most likely not be offering him a new deal beyond 2024 with the likelihood they would entertain offers in the summer.

Howe may not want too much turnover this month with Chris Wood already sealing a move to Nottingham Forest. Though one would surmise Newcastle would be willing to listen to any offers for Shelvey if he was also willing to move on.

Howe has also received a boost with Elliot Anderson featuring in Newcastle’s recently released ‘Toon in training’ video. The local lad missed the Fulham match with a minor calf injury but looks ready to return to the bench tomorrow.

I was excited at the prospect when we signed Wood, I admit. A player who could bully defences, could set up goals, score too.

    Did it work out?

Let’s be honest, it didn’t. 25 million worth? No.

But he did a job last year, you say. In which game?

I wish him the best of luck because he seems an excellent person. Sometimes transfers just don’t work out. Bad luck, wrong system, etc.

From what Eddie says, someone exciting may be coming in soon. Fingers crossed.

Wood scored 5 goals in 39 appearances. This is not a good return. He tried his best but was just not the quality needed for the future.

Continual progression has to be the name of the game.

    Mr T

    He’s 31, also.
Not the future…but needs to play, in his last few years, on a personal level.
    A good pro, imv.

We need to moving players like Shelvey out.

I would not give him the games needed for a contract extension, time for some hard decisions but that is the future!

That makes more sense re Shelvey, I find it strange that so many want to get rid of one of best players without at least giving him a chance to play a few games this season.

Shelvey is going on 31 and has missed the whole season so far. He has zero pace and he will get slower.
Anybody who thinks he is part of a mobile midfield is miles off it. I would rather keep Wood than Jonjo.

Wouldnt be surprised if Shelvey’s agent has looked around for a decent contract whilst he’s been injured again.

Maybe Jonjo has realised himself, hes not daft that his body aint up to this regime.

Why wouldnt he try and get himself a guaranteed contract for next three to four years.

Think folk forget this is work for these lads. He could go to Turkey with family live like a king, look really good in that league and prolong his career. He is no PL midfielder anymore. Talented footballer but hamstrung in our team by the lack of athleticism.

    cyprus,
He was never worth £25M, we know that, Burnley knew that and the owners certainly knew that when they bought him, his true market value was probably the same as the £15M Burnley paid to Leeds. Etikite was injured and didn’t want to come anyway and Isak wasn’t available. The Cambridge game showed we were desperate and needed a striker in to play the following Saturday. We’ve heard people claim it is the worst business the club has ever done, well we’ve just got £15M back for him and a loan fee. So for, let’s say £8/9M we got a striker for a year that played a part in saving us from relegation and putting our plans back three years, I’d say that’s bloody good business in the grand scale of things.

Shelvey only needs 1 or 2 more games to trigger a 1 year extension (unclear if that is appearances or starts) otherwise he is a free agent in the summer.

You know as a player if you’re upto what a manager wants from you.

Jonjo has looked leggy and offit since Eddie has arrived.

As much as Eddie covers for him, he’s simply too slow now for big games. He aint no top 8 player.

Wood is a proper good fella.

Made an impact last year when he first came, popular member of any group and clearly other teams with different systems think he may do canny.

    Thanks for your efforts Woody.

But who are we getting in.

Makes sense, if Jonjo is out of contract in Summer, let him go with our best wishes and blessing, let him get himself a decent wedge/salary for a few years in a league that will suit him much better.

Some interesting ideas on how to stop tickets being resold for inflated prices.
However some of the ideas involving online accounts and showing ID on your mobile etc. would exclude quite a few older supporters who don’t do internet/mobiles etc. There are more than you would think – for example I have to run an online account for a friend of my wife to order cup tickets etc. as he is a season ticket holder but no idea how to go online and I don’t think he has a mobile either!

I Reckon we gunna take a chance on Isak being fit the rest of the year and sign Gordon from Everton.

No point in saying Wilson will be fit. He is a serious injury waiting to happen. Enjoy him while he lasts.

He probably wins the game for us tomorrow at Palace as he’s just starting to look right. If only he cud stay fit.

Maybe Jonjo should do VAR. Oops, he is too fast for that and may also make a correct decision.

I did see him around the corner three times this afternoon. Once at a Turkish barber, once in a Turkish bath and then getting a kebab. I am sure it is a coincidence. Kebab looked nice but he pulled his hamstring getting from seat to counter.

Top man Chris Wood, came to us when we desperately needed a striker, done his part to help us out and is now happy to move on and not just collect a wage here till his contract runs out.

Can tell how well respected and liked he was in the squad too. Put a nice message out on his Instagram and loads of players left nice messages too thanking him and wishing him the best. Even Mehrdad thanked him on Twitter.

Hope he smashes it at Forest and I’m sure if he ever returns to face us, he’ll get a very welcome reception. As he should.

Jail…. I agree that Wood undoubtedly tried his best and probably did the job he was bought for….. but as I’ve mentioned previously when the expectation was on him he bottled it …..
He’ll do OK at Forest as he’s better being a big fish in a little pool ala Burnley..
On a different matter I reckon Bruno is world class.

Jimily, but there is nothing concrete to suggest Shelvey is going anywhere. Most people who want him to leave just seem to assume he will.

I think he is past it and would love him to be replaced but I just don’t buy this Besiktas story so as thing stand I think he will be here until the summer.
