There was a report earlier today that Jonjo Shelvey was close to joining Besiktas. The report originated from Turkish outlet Spor Arena which was very sparse on details other than an agreement was close.
The Mail’s Craig Hope has refuted the claim while providing some positive news on Shelvey’s recovery from his calf injury. Hope tweeted the following this afternoon suggesting Jonjo’s rehabilitation is progressing faster than initially expected:
Jonjo Shelvey going nowhere this month from what I understand. Nearing return to fitness & should be back playing within a few weeks.
Shelvey’s return to action could coincide with Bruno Guimaraes’s return from his ankle injury. It appears he may even be available for the West Ham match to kick off the month of February.
Newcastle are desperately short of numbers in the midfield which has made adding another in this window a priority. While Shelvey may not be leaving this month, a decision on his future will have to be made soon.
The 30-year-old is a handful of starts away from triggering an extension with his current deal expiring in the summer. Newcastle will most likely not be offering him a new deal beyond 2024 with the likelihood they would entertain offers in the summer.
Howe may not want too much turnover this month with Chris Wood already sealing a move to Nottingham Forest. Though one would surmise Newcastle would be willing to listen to any offers for Shelvey if he was also willing to move on.
Howe has also received a boost with Elliot Anderson featuring in Newcastle’s recently released ‘Toon in training’ video. The local lad missed the Fulham match with a minor calf injury but looks ready to return to the bench tomorrow.

Comment #41Check,Bob,Betty, some really good, sensible posts regarding Wood,Shelvey etc…,IMO, both good reliable guys for NUFC over the years, unfortunately time has caught up with them to play at the top end of the Premier League, but hopefully they will both make a good living over the next couple of years etc…. I think Eddie and the board must have few incomings lined up, because IMO, he would never have let CW go and therefore gamble on only two strikers for the rest of the season. Unfortunately, I think Gordon from Everton may be one of his targets……..But like everyone else has mentioned, in Eddie we TRUST, Sure they will get it right, again. Crystal ball time… Palace 0 v Newcastle 2…….Wilson,Longstaff. Cheers GWH

Comment #45Good luck to Wood. Hopefully this means that an announcement for an incoming striker is imminent. Iâd be shocked if we go through the rest of the season with just Isak and Wilson, especially considering how injury prone the latter is.
Assume they let him go now because the opportunity was there and with both Isak and Wilson fit, then Wood wouldnât even be on the bench tomorrow.
You never knowâŚhe could still have an important part to play for us this seasonâŚscoring a goal for Forest against one of our rivals!

Comment #49Slim picking of comments on the Palace forums:
“This is likely going to be a bruising encounter against a billionaire’s Burnley. Even when they were sh!t we have historically struggled to turn them over, but now they are a well drilled team who overcome their limitations with incredible fitness, aggression and energy. Bruno being out will be a big loss for them and there is the possibility that Trippier is out too. Those two absentees could swing things in our advantage, as they are probably their two best players by some margin. Another draw would be a very respectable result, but I just feel that they might underestimate us at their peril. Maybe I’m still drunk on last night’s late equaliser, but I think we might sneak this one 2-1”
“I went to the away cup fixture and was not overly impressed by them. They do seem to be riding a wave atm though which can be a massive factor in things. My stomach says we’ll lose, but it will be tight. My brain says another draw looks likely. I would not complain if so. My heart says we will come out firing after last night and finally put them in their place. They really are not that good and we do have enough quality to put them to the sword. Final stance: 1-1”
“Newcastle have only conceded 2 goals in their last 10 PL games.
I believe Guimaraes might be missing.
Olise has the ability to give Dan Burn a really challenging time.”
“2 goalless draws against them already this season suggests that we have the measure of them. They are still punching above their collective weight. Bouyed up from last night’s performance I predict we end their undefeated streak. 2-0 Palace. Miserable geordie pigeon fanciers to trudge home with their tails between their legs”
“I predict Newcastle will not endear themselves to us. 0-1 to them. – a penalty”
“Living amongst too many Newcastle fans who think theyâre the new Barcelona I would âlove itâ if we turned them over. Theyâre on a very good run but so were Manure. Players will get tired after playing last night so good subs will be needed. Iâll go for 1-1 as I donât think we score enough goals to win this.”
Personally I think we will get a win 1-0 – Botman to score!!

Great defender but none of our players look like getting their heads to the ball. No Bruce or Adams noses for the pretty boys

Comment #53Who knows, but I think Shelvey is in a similar position to Lascelles in that he’s a good pro and good cover, so it’ll be his decision to stay or go. Bruno, Joel, Willock, Longstaff, Shelvey and one more of real quality would represent a very competitive collection of central mids for next term

Comment #54Shelvey is two games away from a contract extension on 80k a week. Slow and getting slower. Not played all season. His reward for playing two games is far too much We can do better with 80k a week

Comment #55Raj – I haven’t watched the press conference yet but there is no way we let Wood go without some irons in the fire. Just a question of the club landing the target they want.
JImily, I say Botman will score every week. One day I will be right!! I do this as I would love him to add a few goals to his game from set pieces.

Comment #56Jimiley I share that opinion but the issue is then he is someone else on top of Wood that we would need to replace NOW, and as I have said I don’t buy this Besiktas story. So as far as I am concerned Shelvey is going nowhere as yet.

The defenders are great at defending corners because you get under the ball and head up and away. Itâs harder to head down into a net. You have to put your head where it hurts. Our guys never seem to be there. The one guy who will take a bullet is Lascelles. He is not as good as the regulars but they can take lessons in courage from him

Singing at The Comrades in Whitley Bay this afternoon so Iâve missed at lot of the posts. Too much to catch up with! Then Crescent Club in Cullercoats this evening for a catch up with my mates.
Anyway I did spot that we may be interested in to Everton players!
Anthony Gordon – no thanks heâs a âBig Girls Blouseâ!
Dominic Calvert Lewin Yes please – I recon heâs a very under rated player!

Comment #62Same thing with Shelvey as with Wood, Iâd be happy for him to leave (with thanks) as long as we get a replacement in. After Bruno, Willock, Longstaff, and Joelinton, the next best option is Shelvey, followed by Anderson. Iâd be happy if we sell Shelvey and loan out Anderson if it means weâve signed a better option than them both.

Comment #63I donât get the DCL links. He wonât join as a backup and why would we pay big money to have 3 strikers, all expecting to start?
Nope.
Money will be spent in areas that were weak or for up and coming players. A young and mobile striker capable of playing on the flanks please.

Sorry for not replying earlier.
As you know, I sometimes practice “seagull management” here (it exists, look it up).
I swoop in, release a couple bombs and disappear :).
So, Shelvey… (Look away, Essex).
I’ve been a critic, feel he doesn’t have the pace for that position. Which generates other issues.
But, he’s sometimes pulled off a Hollywood and I’ll tell you what, his heart was always in the right place.
Conclusion: we’ve seen the difference people in Bruno’s class can make. MF I’d crucial and it’s been a our weakness for ages, even before Shelvey.
My opinion, release and a massive thanks, so that he can get himself a good contract.

Comment #68I still hope we get Fresneda…seems like good future and back up for Tipps still…and it would piss off Arteta…so that is worth an extra mil or two on the bid. I think we might be getting close on Franca too as it seems we put in a bit withing distance of their asking. The few extra quid from Wood should hopefully be enough to seal something like those and still perhaps bring in someone who can slot in pretty quick as that seems to be what Eddie is after as well.

Comment #73Wood, wish him well, was he a shearer, Salah, Haaland, hell no.
But the owners did something that helped the club, they took him away from a relegation rival at the time.
Smart business, Burnley finished in relegation and pocketed 106 Million we finished 9th and pocketed 131 Million, I would say 25 Mill the difference right there on winnings and saved the club, ok Eddie helped. đ
He did a job for us however frustrating it was sometimes to watch him.

Comment #74Good news if true Davas.
Anytoon, I agree Franca would be a good signing Fresneda too. I would choose Franca above Fresneda for this window though as we at least have Manquillo as cover for Tripps and Krafth should not be too far from being fit again.
I would still love us to go for Chiesa but I recognise we probably won’t and certainly won’t in Jan. I just feel he is perfect for the way Howe has us playing but for sure would not come cheap. Perfect signing if we get CL footy though, would be a real statement.
Still a big fan of us signing Gustav Isaksen too, who we were linked with in the summer.

Comment #75It’s away, and no Bruno, so to me it’s most likely that Isak starts ahead of St Max in a 4231, with Joel or Willock starting on the left, with Maxi off the bench second half, if we need a goal

Comment #76I don’t think you can think of Shelvey as he was with poorer players around him, but as cover in a strong collection of midfielders. He’s a very decent player as part of a better squad, as we’ve seen with Joel, Willock and Sean. Not sure we’ll get a better sixth choice central mid.

Comment #77To be honest Gordon just doesn’t impress me he had a decent period before he was rated at 60M when us and Chelsea were linked with him. Ever since then he seems to have gone off the boil.
His fashion sense (or lack of) has nothing to do with it – I just posted thr article about his clothed cos everyone was mentioning his hair.
I simply didn’t want him when we were linked before, especially at 60M+ and if it were me I would not pay half that for him now.

Comment #80I don’t care what DCL likes to do off the pitch (within reason of course!)- I don’t want him because he’s a poor finisher who has only had about 6 months of very good form in his career.
He’s very average.
