Ascendant Newcastle Enter Break Without Elusive Goal At Crystal Palace

Newcastle have been on the front foot for the bulk of the opening 45 minutes at Selhurst Park. Once again a first-half goal proves elusive as the break arrives in a scoreless stalemate.

Newcastle were set up in their 4-3-3 with Pope behind a back four of Trippier, Schar, Botman, and Burn. In the midfield were Guimaraes, Longstaff, and Willock. Wilson led the attack with Joelinton on the left and Almiron on the right.

The Magpies had the game’s first chance in the 6th minute. Guimaraes did brilliantly with a deft flick to free Willock down the left. Willock put his cross to the back post where Almiron was charging. The Paraguayan’s volley missed the target going behind the goal.

Vicente Guaita was forced into action in the 13th minute. After regrouping from a corner, Botman floated a long ball to Trippier down the right. The fullback tapped the ball to Burn near the edge of the area. Burn’s blistering shot was comfortably held by the Palace keeper.

At the 20-minute mark, Guaita was tested after possession was again recycled from a corner. Schar surged forward towards the box and toe-poked a pass to Joelinton. The Brazilian cut inside but his shot was tame and easily collected by Guaita.

Guaita made another save after a corner in the 36th minute. The delivery was sent into the box and found Joelinton near the back post. He lashed the ball goalward which deflected off a Palace defender’s arm before Guiata parried it away. The ball was then cleared by Jordan Ayew with a quick VAR check ruling no penalty.

The half ended with Newcastle in control but unable to breach Palace. The Magpies had 60% possession while outshooting The Eagles 8-3. Eddie Howe will likely not wait to long before introducing either Allan Saint-Maximin or Alexander Isak after the break if a breakthrough isn’t found.

We’re going to need to decide if we want to start winning these games. It’ll cost money. And maybe require Eddie to take a few more chances.

Very disappointing – need some more attacking quality not just average players who run around a lot,

Not good enough from Howe, as usual he leaves it way too late to bring on subs. Giving players 20 mins to get into a match is just not enough.

I’m not happy because even I could see it way back in the first half.

    0-0 final score.

I’ll always take an away draw. But it feels like we dropped 2 points.

    Cup semis next.

The sign of a good team is, if you can`t win a match, then don`t lose it!! any point away in the premier league is a good result HWTL

I guess the best thing we can say is that we didn’t lose. Should have won though, left our shooting boots back home.

We’ve gone from being absolutely lethal in attack to being completely toothless.

I’m starting to not care about these clean sheets, they mean less and less the more we don’t score.

We reminded me of Swansea today when they first came back into the Premier League, all looks very nice, tidy passing and possession, but no threat or clinical edge in the final third, Wilson looked really poor, almost unfit, and even I’m starting to get to the point where I’m scratching my head as to what, from an offensive stand point, Dan Burn offers? pretty much, if you stop our right hand side at the moment, you stop Newcastle….. ASM may as well have not been on the pitch when he came on, he did very little to influence the game, but we should be all used to that by now.

Struggle to break teams down. Need 2-3 signings to refresh team give them a boost. We are good at hanging on and not losing but to get wins we need to take risks in having more players in box

Good point we just weren’t clinical enough. We are the team that ensures that the other team defends for their lives. Used to be us and in the past that is a game we would have lost.

Palace were well set up for the draw but yet again looking at the stats we should have scores at least 2.

Anyway on we march up to 3rd 🙂

Not the worst result in the world but we desperately need another technical midfielder with creativity like a Maddison & a winger who’s direct. Starting XI has got a bit stale now. Need to start ASM & Isak now. They don’t get enough time to impact the game. Willock, Lobby & Big Joel all play their part but they’re all water carriers. We need to replace 2 of them in the starting line up. I’d do that with ASM (or another winger signed) & signing a Maddison or similar type of player
