Howe Keen On Transfer Movement But Won’t Give Assurances

Newcastle were again unable to solve Crystal Palace and for the third time this season, the two clubs have battled to a scoreless draw. Newcastle were the far better team this evening as they thoroughly controlled the match for 90 minutes.

The lack of cutting edge in the final third mean Newcastle come away from Selhurst Park with a solitary point. In the grand scheme, it’s a decent result against a well-coached team that defended very well.

Newcastle are missing a creative spark at the top of the pitch to break stubborn defenses down. That is one of the areas the club may address as the January window enters its final ten days.

Chris Wood’s sudden departure to Nottingham Forest could spur the Magpies into action. Howe stated on Friday that he did not want to lose Wood without a replacement. So hopefully, a new arrival is on the horizon.

Howe was asked about the window after tonight’s draw. The Northern Echo has published his response as follows:

“As a manager, you always want more. You always want more options. I’ve got no issue with the squad strength or size, but I think the point I’ve been making is that if we got injuries, we’d be very light, and we’re keen to do business.

“We’re keen to bring a player in that can help us, but, as we know in this window, and I’ve said many times, there’s no guarantee that will happen.

“We want to sign a player, for sure, but I’ve been preparing for this game, so I don’t have any fresh information to give you.”

Ideally, Howe would like to welcome a versatile forward, a midfielder, and a right-back. There will have to be more outgoings before Newcastle can think of adding three new faces.

Hopefully, Newcastle are ready to move for some targets. It remains very unlikely anyone arrives before Tuesday’s semi-final at Southampton. Though Newcastle can move quickly if needed.

Unfortunately, Arsenal have made their move for Real Valladolid’s Ivan Fresneda with the two clubs engaging in talks today. The young Spaniard would be a perfect young signing to work under Kieran Trippier.

Of course we can trust the owners etc but we do need investment, and we’ve 9 days to do it. It may be time to bite the bullet and pay what’s needed to get Maddison in now. I’d still like to see Eddie rotate the wingers once or twice and I can’t see the benefit in not posing different questions of the full backs. It’s all well and good saying we need to be patient. It’s equally valid to say that we have to strike when the iron is hot and make the most of our brilliant first half of the season, and the small but vital points gap we have.

The final, telling ball is all that’s missing… illustrated by the fact thar our top scorer is a midfielder.
The key, killer, low block defense splitter is now paramount… that’s why the club are taking their time to deliver the correct one.
Teams are foregoing attcking to defend against us.
Hence, we look like the home team, away.

Can’t lose if they can’t/don’t/won’t attack!
    Just gotta break in now!

Ps unless the wife spiked your drink? Were you dancing uncontrollably until 02:30am whilst listening to ABBA (dancing queen) in support of Isak?

We have a nicely balanced H2H match in progress, quite a few players in common. Think it’ll go to the wire with the Spuds – Fulham game being the decider.

Looked at Hincapie. He wouldn’t be a replacement for Schar imo. He’s two footed but prominently left sided by the look of it? To me he looks like a BDB player. I’m not sure he’s what we need as he won’t add to our attacking prowess from the back? Lovely player though.

We’re on 6 clean sheets in a row, if we win one more we will start to appear on record lists alongside Southampton.

Amazingly though there are teams with way more, the Chelsea team of 04/05 managed 10 clean sheets in a row. That’s also the team who have the record for least goals conceded in a season at 15.

But even weirder is the Manure team of 08/09 have an insane number of consecutive clean sheets at 14.

If we could get to 7 I’d be really happy, and there’s every chance with our next game not being until February and at sjp.

Can you believe Terencelim was saying we should sack off Ashworth !!!!
Look at all the gems he’s unearthed at Brighton, it’s absolutely staggering.

I freely admit that losing out on Santos, Perrone, Fresnada and probably Varela and Gabriel is a gut punch and was Kuol already on his way here pre Ashworth, but still and all these guys are brilliant at what they do.

Its weird. Im really torn atm. We arent conceeding which is good but we constantly spurn chances and fail to break teams down who sit deep. This has led to half of our games being draws.

Its not all right to whinge about stuff but its got to be ok with not wanting to watch bore draws week in week out. Eddies tactics are the same every game and sometimes that leads to exciting matches against teams who want to go at us but then it leads to very frustrating games like yesterday and the other 8 draws this season.

I’m not convinced we’ve lost out on anyone. To say we lost out on them would be to trust that the media were telling us the truth in the first place.

We could also have had an interest amd still not bid on a single one of them. I wouldn’t believe anything unless the club confirmed it.

Been to better games recently! No goals, our lads didn’t have their shooting boots on, our fans were unusually quiet, and the highlight was probably Pope’s save. Palace fans around me were very jittery but very happy with a draw at the end. Comedy moments were them standing up for anything resembling an attack.

At one point a guy shouted “go on then” and people stood up when a Palace player picked up the ball just outside of their own box. Another time they all stood up for a throw in just because it was in our half of the pitch…

The only issue I have with Eddie’s tactics right now is he brings subs on too late. He seems to keep players on out of loyalty rather than performance and then when he does tske them off its demist always too late to give the guys coming on a real chance.

Apart from that, I really can’t complain, the draws are hard to swallow but nowhere near as hard as a loss would be tbf.

    Burni,
Every team has a blip or two over a season, we had one earlier in the season and you could say we’re having one now. If this is classed as a blip now then we’ll 100% finish in the top four.

We could have played all day and not scored. You could argue that Palace were then lucky team because they had the two outstanding chances.
Five nil nils is not bad luck it’s a trend.
We have runners who look dangerous on the counter attack with space behind.
But teams are wary now and certainly from mid table downwards they are sitting deep and allowing us to come onto them and trying to hit us on the break. Our problem is we have too many runners and not enough players with ability on the ball. eg Bruno or the entire Man City attackers. As teams defend deep we will continue to drop points . We need to buy some ball players

IrishRob – why take off better players and put on worse players? Only reasons would be if the better player is tired or the tactics just aren’t working.

Yesterday, we carved out plenty of chances to score but I don’t think even 1 shot properly threatened the goal. Every shot either missed the target or was right at their keeper. Closest to a goal all game was the 1 shot on target that Palace had. Great save from Pope. Defeat would have been a bitter pill to swallow!

I really want to see Isak fit and starting soon.

A blip? Last 6 games, 3 wins, 3 draws and 12 points. Equals 2.0 points per game. Better than our season average so far and we are in 3rd.

Most of the draws eddie stuck with his 433 so it stayed a draw. Only game heafing for a draw but we got a win was fulham and its because eddie was FORCED to go 442 with injury to bruno and making the usual 2nd half sub he couldnt have 3 mid on pitch so had to go 442. A change in formation we got the win. Been saying it all season change formation to get winner when 433 isnt working. Against palace he stuck to 433 all game and it was another draw. Cue the wag ‘we are top 3 unlike last 15 years’ pile on now

To all those saying “we need to strengthen!” – you need to look at the finances of the club before you assume ‘because we have rich owners’ we can just go out and buy, buy, buy.

Our current contracts are operating at something like 95% of our annual turnover. That’s HUGE by any stretch of PL standards.

I firmly believe the owners know what they’re doing, the recruitment team know what they’re doing, Eddie knows what he’s doing. We’re over performing this season. If you doubt that you’re not following closely enough.

Those saying “look at Chelsea” – they are playing a very dangerous game. They’ve got players on EIGHT year deals to spread the initial transfer fee over that time… but if those players don’t work out, as is often the way at Chelsea, they are stuck with BIG wages they cannot offload.

Our owners want to do things properly, spend sensibly, walk away from deals that are over-inflated and never be taken for a ride.

Enjoy the journey, stop worrying about where you think we should be and remember where we’ve come from and what our ambitions were at the start of the season. Most of us would have happily taken a top 8 finish…. now we’re dreaming of more but don’t let the dream taint the enjoyment of what we’re going through. For the first time in a long time we’re not looking at the relegation zone.
