Newcastle have a chance to climb back into third place with a result this afternoon at Crystal Palace. Manchester United are just 1 point above with a difficult trip to Emirates looming on Sunday.

Eddie Howe’s team selection is a point of intrigue heading into the match. Bruno Guimaraes has reportedly recovered enough from his ankle injury to make the traveling squad. Allan Saint-Maximin and Alexander Isak will also be itching to start.

I suspect Howe will not risk Bruno for the full 90 minutes. Allan Saint-Maximin hasn’t started in the league since August and will be motivated to impress should he get the nod. I suspect he will with Joelinton moving to the midfield.

This is the team I predict Howe to name this evening with Saint-Maximin in for Guimaraes. The bench would be a strong one with Bruno and Alex available for cameos.

The injury situation looks a lot better if Guimaraes is fit. Both Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Targett are a few weeks away but making progress. Elliot Anderson has returned to training with a chance to make the bench today.

Crystal Palace are in decent shape on the injury front though will be missing starting center-back Joachim Anderson with a calf injury. We could see either James Tompkins or the young American Chris Richards in for the Dane.

This is another tricky match against Jekyll and Hyde Palace. A lot could depend on which one shows up. Howe will have the lads primed and ready. Hopefully, three points and another clean sheet are on the way.

Bruno or Gascogne? That’s a good one. Gazza is better offensively but Bruno has a better all around game. I think Bruno will be top dog in future if we can be successful

Surely if Bruno is nearly fit, he has to be saved for the Carabao cup semi. It would be an enormous risk to play him today, even though he’ll be greatly missed

I totally agree with you mate, you play your best team if they are all fit, but i have my doubts Bruno will have fully recovered from last week, it`s just a hunch though, we will get our answer very soon fella.

Gazza was way better than Beardsley or Bruno at age 23 but injuries and drink/ drugs meant he didn’t have half the career he should have. In 1990 Gazza was the best player on the planet. Bruno has a way to go before anyone suggests that of him.

I can see the argument for playing Bruno however although his injury may be OK now he probably hasn’t trained all week. I think I’d leave him on the bench unless we really need him and save him for Southampton after a few days training under his belt!

Some really good points about playing Bruno,I take both sides into account, but for me qualifying for the CL is more important than winning a cup in our state of evolution.

Only 1 day training between CP and the Saints. If Bruno not fit to start, should not be on bench. Scenario, one of our other 3 midfielders gets taken out after 2 minutes. Who do you put on?

I like the Fresneda and Franca links, two exciting young players.
I was initially thinking Joao Pedro would now come in for Wood but he’s put injured for a month or two. However I think it’ll be that type of player they’ll be looking at, someone young who’s happy to come on from the bench and can play up top or out wide.

If Bruno plays then Eddie and his medical staff have passed him fit.
Personally, I’d like to see him rested… Just in case, a sprained ankle needs 2 weeks to get over especially in an elite professional sport. However if he even comes on as a sub it must not have been a sprain? Unless these Brazilians of Rio de Janeiro are made from Titanium 😉
Will be interesting but the main positive for me it looks like he will be fit enough for both the legs of the semi final…

On Bruno, just having him travelling with the squad is great news. I think he’ll be on the bench but would rather he missed this one altogether really.
Maxi vs Isak for a start on the left, I think Maxi will start. With Isak getting another 30 mins from the bench.
Hoping Anderson can force his way back into the side, injuries have held him back a back this season and I’ve read various comments saying he’s not good enough which feels harsh. Championship loan may have been good for him but I’d rather have Anderson coming off the bench than Ritchie or Fraser.

I have an update on what's happening with my treatment for prostate cancer.

Last week, my oncologist called me late in the day and said he thought it was best to terminate my treatment with radium 223 dichloride because it was having such a negative effect on my health - specifically my digestive system.

I had completed 3 of the planned 6 infusions.

They had looked at the bone scans and three CAT scans I had early last week, and they showed no signs of the cancer spread being slowed or stopped: in fact, it was continuing to spread and my PSA account continued to rise.

The only treatment left now is to go back and have another bout of chemotherapy with docetaxel being the medication used.

I understand this will be a 7-month job with 10 sessions 3 weeks apart - almost double my first chemo treatment in Apil 2017, when I has 6 treatmnts.

The problem I have is that I'm in a very poor physical state right now, due to my digestive system being basically torn apart by the radium 223.

The radium 223 has leaked into my digestive system and caused me to have severe diarrhea, nausea, and heartburn, and it was (is) very serious.

They said it was too dangerous to proceed with the radium 223 treatment, with little benefit being shown.

I am also suffering from severe exhaustion, basically, because I have zero testosterone, and all the treatments I've had for the cancer, have further lessened the energy available to me.

It reminds me of the saying that if cancer doesn’t kill you - the treatment will (laugh).

It will probably take up to 8 weeks to get back to a physical state where I can start chemotherapy, and that's where I am now, but the cancer continues to spread in the bones.

I've also been put in touch with the dietitian from UNC Healthcare, who will help me get back my health - she is very helpful.

So that's where it stands it's been quite a journey over 12 years and I think I've had almost every treatment available.

It has really taken a toll on my body and on my energy, but that's where it stands and obviously, I'll do the best I can in the upcoming months with chemo and hope I can get through it.

It is as it is - and another challenge in life.
