Newcastle Take Point At Palace In Scoreless Stalemate

Newcastle couldn’t turn possession and chances into three points at Selhurst Park. They take an away point to stretch the unbeaten streak in the league to 15 which is a club record.

No changes were made after a first-half stalemate with Allan Saint-Maximin doing individual warm-ups during the break. Newcastle immediately got the ball into the box but had their shot blocked and cleared.

Wilson had a crack at goal in the 52nd minute from a corner routine. Trippier pulled away after a short corner and whipped a delivery into the box. Wilson flashed his header straight into the waiting hands of Guaita.

Newcastle again sent an effort straight to the Palace keeper a few minutes later. On a break, Almiron peeled away from two Eagles and found Joelinton down the left. The Brazilian struck his shot well but it was straight to Guaita.

In the 64th minute, Palace continued to defend well but were conceding a lot of set-pieces. From yet another corner, Newcastle came tantalizingly close to a breakthrough. Trippier’s delivery was met by Botman, whose header flashed wide of the near post.

In the 69th minute, Howe brought on the arsenal. Allan Saint-Maximin and Alexander Isak made their entrances as Willock and Wilson made way. Saint-Maximin took up duties on the left pushing Joelinton into the midfield three.

Nick Pope was forced to make a critical save in the 73rd minute. Odsonne Edouard and Burn vied for a ball in the box. It was deflected and Jean-Philippe Mateta latched onto it with a blistering effort that Pope parried over the bar. It was Palace’s first effort on target.

Trippier put another enticing ball into the box after some good buildup play in the 79th minute. Almiron played Trippier down the right and his measured cross was met by Isak. The Swede’s header was straight to Guaita; a common refrain for the evening.

Howe threw Jacob Murphy on in the 85th minute for Miguel Almiron to get some fresh legs down the right flank. A few minutes later Murphy was down the right and flashed a delivery across the 6-yard box just missing two Magpies before Saint-Maximin had his shot blocked behind for a corner.

The match ended in another scoreless stalemate between the two clubs. Newcastle move to third in the table with the disappointing result. The Magpies had over 60% possession with 16 shots and 15 corners but no goals.

ASM looks like he’s improving game by game and when I say improving I mean he finally seems to be getting it…he’s playing his part in the system and pressing well.

Still think we’ll sell him though!

I think he will start tuesday and so will lsak

We looked like the home team, on another day we would have scored. 15 games unbeaten is incredible. Looking forward to the semis. Isak needs more game time, brilliant player!

Remember earlier in the season at home when we had that good (own) goal against Palace bizarrely chalked off for a foul by WIllock when it was Willock who was actually fouled.? It was one of the worst decisions I have ever seen. The Palace defender, Tyrone Mitchell, was so focused on fouling Willock that he wasn’t aware of the ball and it when in off him.
It looked like Willock was out for revenge today as I thought he played well. But it wasn’t to be.

AP – I get what you are saying but you may as well say ā€˜if we had beaten everybody we’d be top of the league’

The fact is we are punching way above our weight and doing it in style – im loving the way we are playing now – im excited for matches again – that (to me) is what football is about … I’m not disappointed as I spent 40 years (minus a few with Keegan and SBR) crying into my cornflakes….. we used to be the team parking the bus, now we have to play around it. Long may that continue

I don’t care if fans want to complain, it’s just an opinion and being just after a game sometimes it’s just down to frustration.

I get it, I watch shouting at the game like most, but this game when we have played in the past would have been one where we are on like 11 – 20 odd points etc and needed to win.

I for one love that we are in the mix up top, Tuesday win will be a good four days for the Toon.

I don’t do cornflakes, I’m more a Weetabix man, but regarding the rest, I share those feelings and totally agree.

I can’t remember when I last watched games in a relaxed manner. Before it was desperate defending, hope that one chance will be converted and the big R looming, always.

And crying in my Weetabix… Pathetic scenes man.

We had a good number of shots, but always either off target or alternatively right at the keeper. Need to be just a bit more clinical with our shooting. Also need to take some shots from just outside of box that don’t go screaming over the bar.

    Defensively, NUFC are simply amazing!

SiOliver – true but Dyer is also right…scroll through posts and you see we do have an element of that.

To be fair every club does. Some fans of any club are just more rational and realistic than others.

We have our share of lunatics just like every club does.

Dingo well we had the chances to actually win every game and be top. So like i keep saying if we had a more prolific striker we could win more games hence asking for more signings. Im just aiming higher than you and others on this blog

I don’t think anyone is unhappy with our current position, or how the season has gone, or how the team has progressed. It’s been a great ride. Why does that mean that we can’t worry that our goalscoring has dried up?

Enjoy the ride folks. We’ve just started the joy ride strap in and enjoy. It’s gonna be the mother of all journeys. There will be some pit stops along the way. We will be like an F1 super car on steroids.

Hey but you will have the ones that moan that we had to have a pit stop.

Good night all. Chin up it was a well earned point. On another day we’d have come away with zero points if it were not for Popes worldie save.

    Onwards and upwards

January transfer window will not disappoint. It will put a smile on all our faces and the necessary tweak the squad needs.

All eyes on Southampton. Let’s blow them out the water. Get your hotels in London booked lads and lasses they are going quick. Just a heads up šŸ˜‰

I respect your views but with a proper forward we should have ripped those hard working eagles to bits with 61% possession…I just hope stuff is happening in the background and we sign a proper striker (alongside Isak)

We are 3rd mate, record breaking unbeaten run. 7 clean sheets with players that will make us better incoming. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves we are ahead of the curve by a long long way with that squad at our disposal.

Exactly my view, Prince’s. We dominated for most of the game, to the point that CP wasn’t even sniffing the Newcastle box. And somehow we couldn’t break through and get a goal. Personally, I think it looks like Wilson’s movement is lacking recently. He’s not getting into spaces and making himself available. When he did today on a few occasions, he didn’t shoot.

We need a change in the starting 11. We narrowly escaped being punished today (Pope’s save) and last week (Mitro’s miss).

Without Miggy in 8-in-9 form, this starting 11 lacks goals.

Not the worst result in the world, we set a record, moved in to third and kept probably a record number of clean sheets, Eddie H even set a personal record of unbeaten English managers this century. Given Man U’s recent result a bit perspective is needed. Nevertheless it shows how far we have come when it feels like two points dropped.
