Karl Darlow could soon join the ranks of Magpies out on loan with Hull Live reporting Hull City are closing in on a move for the 32-year-old shot-stopper. The report claims Hull boss, and former tiger, Liam Rosenior is keen on adding Darlow before their match against QPR next weekend.
The Tigers are short at goalkeeper with Chelsea loanee Nathan Baxter rehabbing an elbow injury. The 24-year-old had started 12 straight matches earlier in the season in a battle with Matt Ingram for the number one gloves. Baxter was injured in December and has returned to Stamford Bridge for his recovery.
Newcastle reached an agreement with Loris Karius last week to extend his contract until the end of the campaign. That decision coupled with Martin Dubravka’s recall from his loan spell at Old Trafford means Darlow is free to leave this month.
During his Friday press conference, Howe admitted one of his keepers was likely to leave before the end of the window saying:
“Loris has been excellent. Some really good training sessions among the keepers we have. We have a unique situation with the Carabao Cup because Martin is cup-tied. Probably some late movement there.”
Darlow is reportedly keen on getting more playing time. In each of the last two seasons, he got stints as the number one during Dubravka’s foot injuries. During the first half of the 2020-21 campaign, Darlow played out of his skin in keeping Newcastle away from the relegation places.
Newcastle currently have four senior players out on loan with Chris Wood making his debut for Nottingham Forest yesterday. Ciaran Clark (Sheffield), Isaac Hayden (Norwich), and Jeff Hendrick (Reading) are on loan in the Championship.

@Fenham to Chalfont. Whats the profile pic of mate?
From previous thread. It’s the Union Jack and The British Royal Legion Flag crossed with the slogan “We Will Remember Them” the picture below the slogan is of our King Charles III.
The picture was taken in the Royal British Legion in Ruislip.
It’s out of respect to all of our fallen heroes/soldiers that have fought for world freedom, whilst protecting our great nation and the commonwealth.

Comment #45Will be interesting to see who we bring in before the window shuts. Talent for the future, players for the here and now. Juggling FFP will be hard for them to bring in a decent striker as cover for CW and AI, and cover for Bruno, this window.
But whoever is brought in by EH and his staff, we have to trust them to get it right. After all they’ve not made too many mistakes (if any) so far.

Comment #52My concern is that Miggy may have had a golden run like Willock and then doesn’t score again for yonks.
Bruno had a scoring run last season that he hasn’t repeated this one, and Wilson hasn’t been hot since the WC.
We defo need more scorers in the team but not at the expense of weakening the work rate and defensive side of our attackers and mids.
That’s the big issue Eddie has to solve with new players. I doubt Murdryk for example would put in the same graft as Miggy or Willock. Whether the goals he’d score and create would outweigh a lack of defensive team play is what Eddie and his scouting team are paid to decide.
Small holes sink big ships, and what seem small changes to a team can sink big teams. Just ask Lpool and Chelsea.

Comment #53I do not think we will buy anybody. Maybe a loan.
The club thinks it’s ahead of schedule and does not want to rush things.
It can do this to Eddie because he does not have an international profile. I hope I am wrong because Eddie deserves total support

Comment #54Maddison and Gordon for me. Gordon is a left winger we need.
We didn’t like either of the above players as we’ve (me included) called them cheats, divers, whingers, t@ats and many other things.
The thing is, these 2 players under Eddie would transform us. Both English and both understand the EPL well. I’ve always rated Gordon highly personally. I just believe he has lost his way in an awfully managed awful Everton team. I think this lad has the tenacity and intensity in his game to really suit how Eddie wants us to play. Eddie will calm his temperament. The lad is just overly passionate which for me is a good thing if it gets channeled in the right way. Eddie is the man for that and if Gordon does sign I’ll stand by that decision as a very good one. Love direct wingers who whip the ball in as he does. He also likes to cut inside like he has done against us at the death at Goodison Park. He left our defence for dead.
In Eddie and NUFC we trust

Comment #57Of the current crop of players we have this is what I come up with who we need to move on and whos good.
Goalkeepers- We have too many taking up wages and squad places.
Pope- outstanding goalkeeper good enough for any team.
Darlow- sell, done his time with this club and needs to be sold.
Gillespie- sell, why is he even at this club? not good enough for league 1 never mind Newcastle.
Dubravka- sell, was a solid keeper for us for a number of years but showed his true colours of us when he went to man united, need to take him off the wage bill as he’s on 70k a week.
Karius- our second best keeper by far- I would keep him and pope.
Defenders- We have a solid backline but once one or two get injured we have championship standard players to replace. we need a proper leftback that can play rightback and another quality centre back.
Tripper- excellent right back and a true leader
Botman- world class defender
Schar- solid centre back
Burn- solid centre back – he isn’t a left back as he’s too slow.
Lascelles- sell, done his time at this club but just isn’t good enough for where we want to be he was barely good enough under Bruce.
Dummett- why is he still here?
Richie- why is he still here?
Krath- I would keep him as a 3rd choice.
Manquillo- sell, has never impressed me since the day he signed for us. Useless player. bang average all-over him.
Midfield- this is where we lack any real quality or cutting edge, realistically we need 2 players in this position of premier league quality.
Bruno- our best player by far.
Shelvey, sell been here far too long and simply isn’t good enough. he’s better than Longstaff though.
Longstaff- he needs to replaced with a quality midfielder as he simply isn’t good enough to be starting week in week out. makes way too many mistakes, has poor finishing and is slow.
Willock- good squad player and can have a good game every once in a while.
Joelinton- solid player who has improved massively since Eddie took over.
Anderson- could be a good player in a few years time but isn’t premier league standard, he proved that in the few games he’s started for us. needs to be loaned out.
Hayden- on loan but needs to be sold or kept as a squad player
Hendrick- on loan but needs to be sold. will never be good enough.
Attack- we have some good options upfront but outside of our starters, we are extremely weak here, needs serious reinforcement and investment.
Wilson- good player on his day- been poor form lately and needs to be dropped for Isak
Isak- world class defender that should be starting every game as our first choice striker, he is miles above Wilson IMO
Murphy- sell, he has been with us since 2016 and has never improved. bang average player.
Fraser- sell, not good enough.
Saint maximin- Great player and kept us up last season almost single handily- he doesn’t seem to fit in eddies plans as he too often does not track back and gets disposed quite often I wouldn’t sell him but keep him as he will improve.
Almiron- massively improved player under Eddie howe but his form has dropped off since his purple patch, he needs someone to compete with him for that RW spot and Diaby would be that man.
As you can see there is a hell of a lot of players who just simply aren’t good enough. our first 11 is carrying us.

Comment #58jimiley and Munster urging the owners ‘to go for it’ like they’re hesitant to do so. It’s about finding the right player at the right price, we’re not commercially in a position to spend £85M on Diaby and they might not even think he’s worth it anyway, Leicester might be refusing to sell Maddison now at any price until they’re potentially still in the PL this summer and Tielemans might just be point blank refusing to budge. Patience padawans.

I don’t think PIF won’t release cash this month because we are ahead of schedule. That would have been Ashley’s way of thinking.
PIF will want to get us into the CL asap because that’s where the big income and worldwide profile comes from that they want.
The issue is many clubs don’t want to sell in Jan or slap huge prices on. Eddie won’t want signings just for the sake of it and blow most of his summer budget when there is a much bigger choice and lower prices.
The club have done brilliantly with signings so far and I trust them to make the right decisions. Having said that, I’m confident there will be at least one game changer signing this window.

Comment #60Our draws have little to do with the opposition’s defensive set up or capabilities. It is down to our inability to take our chances.
Our xg yesterday was 1.4, this is more than our xg v Spurs where we scored twice.
Our xg v Leeds was 2.2. This was more than our xg v Leicester, which was our previous game before Leeds, where we scored 3 goals.
We are creating chances but not converting them. It is a bit of a misnomer to credit the opposition for keeping us out or to say we cannot break teams down.
It is our finishing that is the issue.

Comment #61It never fails to make me smile when our owners/management get criticised for being beaten to the signing of players we are allegedly interested in. All these links are just rumours in the press and/or on Twitter and we’ve no idea who we are actually interested in or in negotiating for?
If when the window closes and we haven’t signed anybody – especially a replacement for Wood – then some criticism is maybe justified but at the moment it is ridiculous based on whispers and ITKs on Twitter!!

Comment #62Someone put on the other day that we have players good enough for our squad (first 11 yesterday plus Isak, ASM, Shelvey and karius or Dubravka).
Out of those 15 I think Pope, Trippoer, Schar, Botman, Burn, Bruno, ASM, Wilson and Isak are good enough to be regular first 11.
A stronger back up right back, a specialist left back, young centre back, creative midfielder, winger and striker.
Those new players should see the back of Dummet, Ritchie, Fraser, Murphy, Lascelles, manquilo. That’ll leave us with a very very strong squad.Probably over the next 2 seasons.
Exciting times.

Comment #64Bills, that’s what we need, one game changer.
It’s taken teams a while to cotton on, but now we see how Bruno is being marshalled and Miggy too. Maxi is producing nothing when he is on and willock, much as I love him ( he’s my son’s fav nufc player) is probably the kind of guy we want as a sub.
And I don’t buy in to this thing that new players can upset the dressing room, only if they are bad characters. A new player can improve everyone’s mood and lift optimism levels and right now I can see us getting a lot of draws instead of wins, unless we add a bit of zest and creativity.

Comment #66I’m surprised to see a man who touched the ball once – decent touch – running away with our MOM poll.
Went for Schar. Defensively sound and always trying to add to the attack whether through the middle or creating the overload on the right which he did a lot in the second half.

Comment #68I think a couple of porkies were told on here last night.
In the PL we’ve had 6 x 0-0 draws.
3 of them were away to ManU, Brighton and Arsenal. – all excellent results.
1 was at home to CP where it is now acknowledged that VAR robbed us of the win. (Worth noting we’d be 2nd with this result)
That leaves Leeds at home and CP away that we could be arguably disappointed in.
I know we need to score more goals and win more games, but we’ve only lost 1 x game in our1st 20 – Given our recent history that has to go down as miraculous!
As I said last night perspective and patience is required from us all while respectfully sharing our opinions. 😀

Comment #70I think Willock is starting to really improve and impress again. He has been great over our last few games. Although he was subbed he was my MoTM yesterday…He is like a gazelle when he goes and leaves defenders for dead. I think Willock has a lot more to offer this season as does Lobby. Both have great engines and cover so much grass.
We just need that extra bit of quality dropped in. Like I posted earlier I’d love Maddison and Gordon (although not to everyone’s taste)

Comment #71I think there will a lot of decent youngsters through the door, South America seems to somewhere we have focused scouting on. I wonder if we’ve got scouts in North America too, as there’s a fair few American and Canadian players coming through.
Feel like Isak and Saint-Maximin have to start Tuesday, the harder decision is whether Wilson starts with them.
With Bruno not being out injured and Shelvey apparently a few weeks away from being back. I wonder if the attention moves to a winger, attacking wide player.
I think even just one quality signing in this window would be a great window, just to freshen the side up a bit whilst adding a bit more quality and depth.
Diaby would certainly improve us. As would a Maddison. We kinda need a young Son type player who can play anywhere across the front three. Uuummmm Rashford haha

Comment #72FollowFollow. It shouldn’t need xg stats to back up what is evident to anyone who watches the games.
Incidently v Palace at home, our xg was 2.8. Therefore that is another game where our finishing has let us down and not a result of the opposition’s defensive set up.

Comment #73I don’t like Gordon, plus I think he’ll be massively overpriced. However I do think he’ll mature over the next few years and Howe could surely help him develop.
Wood leaving frees up a squad place, Fraser potentially going would mean there’s space for 2 incoming. Unless they are young and don’t need to be registered.
I think Shelvey will stay and get his year extension. Not sure how Kraft is doing in his recovery but would guess he might be registered if he can play a part towards the end of the season.

I agree with your post. We squandered chance after chance yesterday. We seemed to be snatching at opportunities. If all the clear chances went in from both teams that game could have quite easily been a 1-4 on another day because of our dominant display. Palace couldn’t get out there own half for huge swaths of the game. They were dominated. On another day Big Joe, Miggy, Wilson and Isak could have all been on the score sheet.
Eddie needs to work on shooting, finishing and heading. So many chances have gone begging from heading opportunities lately. So yes we are creating just not clinical where it matters when we have been brutally clinical in many games this season. Just wasn’t out day and Palace ground is not a great stomping ground for us.

Comment #75I don’t understand. Why is anyone demanding we sign a top striker?? We bought Isak for £60m and we have Wilson too. What good would another top striker do? We would benefit from a top quality attacking option from the left, better backup from the right, and more attacking threat from the centre.
A young striker to be 3rd choice makes sense as Wood left but definitely one who is happy to be on the bench for now.

Comment #76What people need to realise/remember is we are fishing in a different pool now, the players who can take us forward are coveted by the more established big teams, We’ll be trying our best to get these players but it’s a lot harder than getting the players we targeted under the former incumbent, I for one have confidence that the people involved will get us what we require

Comment #80Our strikers haven’t scored many this season because they’ve not been available.
Our problem is that (except Miggy) our midfield haven’t contributed enough. In terms of goals scored v chances, ASM, Bruno, Joe, Willock, Longstaff, Murphy have all underproduced.
If each one of them had scored just 1 x more – then it’s possible we’d be top of the league.
Let that sink in. 😉
