The Premier League takes a break once again as Newcastle’s next two matches are against Southampton in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. The first leg takes place on Tuesday night at St Mary’s with the second one week later at St. James’ Park.
This cup competition is the lone bright spot in an otherwise dismal campaign for the Saints, who lost 1-0 at home to Aston Villa yesterday to remain rock bottom of the Premier League.
It’s a polar opposite feeling up north as Newcastle are having their best season in a decade with a chance to make it a historic one. Newcastle are rooted in the top four of the league and have silverware in their sights.
Southampton are the next focal point for Eddie Howe and the Magpies. Coming away from St Mary’s on Tuesday in good shape for the return leg is the aim. A multiple-goal victory would ease any angst on Tyneside.
Newcastle need to quickly solve their goalscoring woes for any hopes of an easier second leg. Goals have been in short supply – except when playing Leicester City – since football returned after the World Cup break. More struggles finding the back of the net against Southampton could prove costly.
The other end of the pitch has been nothing short of sensational as Newcastle continue to keep clean sheets. Southampton are the last club to breach Howe’s preferred eleven with Romain Perraud’s late strike in early November.
The Magpies continue to be very difficult to breach but goals are going to be needed for a Wembley final. Hopefully, the lads can take their frustration in front of the net out on the struggling Saints on Tuesday.

Comment #7Shocking the way Neville is letting his support of Man U seep in to his commentary.

Comment #8I hope Eddie Howe picks an attacking side to take the game to Southampton and hopefully return to SJP with a couple goals lead for the second leg.

As Abe Lincoln famously quoted.
“You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all the time”
Ergo, some people are never happy.
One of my favourite quotes!
Another one is “You can take a horse to water……….
….. but you can’t make if drink”

Comment #16Some of the hardcore Palace fans chanting “f**k the Saudis” yesterday while a pitchside advertising hoarding for “Saudi Egyptian Developers” was displayed. Ironic. Mentioned it during the game yesterday and a few people nearby seemed a bit uncomfortable. We were not sitting in the same stand as the hardcore fans, they were all behind one of the goals, far away from the Toon fans too.

Comment #17Raj – pretty sure Shearer is obviously biased when he’s talking about our games too.
I don’t have a problem with Gary Neville, I think he’s very insightful.

Comment #18BTW I do think Maddison would make a fantastic difference in our present situation – he would defo add the goals we are needing from midfield!
You know it makes sense!
Everton’s Gordon – err no thanks! Not a Howe kind of signing – I really hope I don’t end up with egg on my face with that statement.

Raj i couldn`t agree with you more mate, it`s shocking how biased Neville is in co commentary, and i agree with Davas when he says ex players shouldn`t be aloud on commentary when their team is playing.

Comment #21Not watching the match so not listening to Neville’s commentary but I don’t usually have a problem with biased commentators or pundits. I’ve never heard one terribly biased anyway, just a little creeps in. Is Neville really being that bad?

Comment #24Does anyone know the points difference between Captain & Vice Captain in FFL?
I have a certain Manchester City player (guess who) as my Captain and this week’s opponent has him as Vice Captain! It’s a tight game as all the last three weeks have!

I`ll have to disagree about shearer being biased when Newcastle are playing, my experience is he keeps it very neutral and professional but most definitely not biased, he never hides the fact he is a dyed in he wool Newcastle fan, but when it comes to co commentary he is so professional and unbiased indeed.

Comment #40I don’t object to pundits in the studio supporting their former clubs but having a former player commentating, as Neville does, is not on.
His bias is nauseous. The same goes for his mate on Liverpool games.
