How Will Newcastle Do At Southampton In First Leg Of Carabao Cup Semi-Final?

The Premier League takes a break once again as Newcastle’s next two matches are against Southampton in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. The first leg takes place on Tuesday night at St Mary’s with the second one week later at St. James’ Park.

This cup competition is the lone bright spot in an otherwise dismal campaign for the Saints, who lost 1-0 at home to Aston Villa yesterday to remain rock bottom of the Premier League.

It’s a polar opposite feeling up north as Newcastle are having their best season in a decade with a chance to make it a historic one. Newcastle are rooted in the top four of the league and have silverware in their sights.

Southampton are the next focal point for Eddie Howe and the Magpies. Coming away from St Mary’s on Tuesday in good shape for the return leg is the aim. A multiple-goal victory would ease any angst on Tyneside.

Newcastle need to quickly solve their goalscoring woes for any hopes of an easier second leg. Goals have been in short supply – except when playing Leicester City – since football returned after the World Cup break. More struggles finding the back of the net against Southampton could prove costly.

The other end of the pitch has been nothing short of sensational as Newcastle continue to keep clean sheets. Southampton are the last club to breach Howe’s preferred eleven with Romain Perraud’s late strike in early November.

The Magpies continue to be very difficult to breach but goals are going to be needed for a Wembley final. Hopefully, the lads can take their frustration in front of the net out on the struggling Saints on Tuesday.

Diaby watch: Bayer Leverkusen are easily beating Mönchengladbach and Diaby has been substituted. He was hardly in the game today as his fellow players did the business! He’s quick and tricky and can press.

Arsenal have breached Manchester at last!

At least Neville is no where near as biased as Alan Smith when he does the Arsenal games!!

Magic – I do think Shearer is relatively impartial but can’t hide it all of the time. I’ve always thought of Neville as similar. Both professional and fair but can’t completely hide their support for their clubs.

    I thought it was….

You can take a horse to water but you can’t make it pink. Another failure by the Puglet, but he keeps his ears close to the ground.

Neville wasn’t bad. He criticised quite a few Manure players etc. Of course he wanted a Man U win.

I hope we get manure in the final as they are rubbish
Arsenal moss out on Mudrych and two days later they sign Trossard for 27 mil. The players are there to buy. Trossard would be a good signing, prob pay60 million for Gordon

Arsenal win and I won my FPL H2H match. Good day. Golf was cancelled this morning due to fog so not a perfect day but I’ll take it. 🙂

Will definitely be watching the Tuesday game in a pub somewhere, assuming I can’t pull a ticket out of a hat somehow…

    Clint Flick

You made great point there about Alan Shearer being extra critical when being a co commentator when Newcastle are playing, it has even annoyed me in the past, he most certainly is never ever biased in Newcastle`s favour Clint mate.

Whatever Neville and Carragher are like, at least they aren’t Keys and Gray. Just listened to 2 mins of them and it was more than enough.

Jimiley, Man U aren’t as good as the media are making out but they aren’t rubbish and Rashford is on fire at the minute.
Also, it’s not like we aren’t interested in the types of players you mention. We can’t just go get them – the players also decide where they want to go. I mean Mudryk seems to have chosen Chelsea just cos of the money

Davas – those 2 are awful.

I don’t really like Carragher much though. I get that he can be entertaining but he has no class whatsoever. Ian Wright isn’t particularly bright or insightful but he’s entertaining and also actually has some class. Shearer, Henry, and Gary Neville are 3 that I do like though.

    TDS

Evening mate, like i said Shearer never hides the fact he is a dyed in the wool Geordie and Newcastle fan, but in the commentary box he is the ultimate professional, and like Clint Flick says if anything he becomes even more critical of Newcastle mate, TDS i can assure you if Shearer was even in the slightest biased i would soon voice my feelings about it on this platform mate.

I don’t like Carragher either but, if I watch a game (which isn’t often if NUFC aren’t involved) , I usually just switch off after it as I’ve not got much time for pundits.

Trossard was available because he fell out with the manager.
He would have come to us in a heartbeat but we made no approach. Arsenal make a bid and sign him in a day or two. 27 mil is cheap

jimiley – ummmm…a joke because he currently plays for Arsenal, the league leaders, and there’s simply no way in hell they would sell him to us. We’ve got as much chance of buying Haaland.

So, I don’t know what you’re trying to say.
