The Premier League takes a break once again as Newcastle’s next two matches are against Southampton in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. The first leg takes place on Tuesday night at St Mary’s with the second one week later at St. James’ Park.
This cup competition is the lone bright spot in an otherwise dismal campaign for the Saints, who lost 1-0 at home to Aston Villa yesterday to remain rock bottom of the Premier League.
It’s a polar opposite feeling up north as Newcastle are having their best season in a decade with a chance to make it a historic one. Newcastle are rooted in the top four of the league and have silverware in their sights.
Southampton are the next focal point for Eddie Howe and the Magpies. Coming away from St Mary’s on Tuesday in good shape for the return leg is the aim. A multiple-goal victory would ease any angst on Tyneside.
Newcastle need to quickly solve their goalscoring woes for any hopes of an easier second leg. Goals have been in short supply – except when playing Leicester City – since football returned after the World Cup break. More struggles finding the back of the net against Southampton could prove costly.
The other end of the pitch has been nothing short of sensational as Newcastle continue to keep clean sheets. Southampton are the last club to breach Howe’s preferred eleven with Romain Perraud’s late strike in early November.
The Magpies continue to be very difficult to breach but goals are going to be needed for a Wembley final. Hopefully, the lads can take their frustration in front of the net out on the struggling Saints on Tuesday.

Comment #124We really need to find a Odegard type player.
His touch and skill are a pleasure to watch.,
I also thought having Ashworth at the club would mean we would get Trossard, so where was he when that was happening and before some jump on a say look what he done at Brighton, well he ain’t there no more I want to know what’s he doing for The Toon.
Flying around and watching players, yes it’s part of the job but also attaining some for the first team and once again yes he may have go some for the youth team and possibly in the future they will come good, but we have a chance of winning a cup, also outside chance of league, although I don’t think we could pull it off, I would be happy without champions league next season as I don’t think we still have the squad for it, Europa would work, test the waters etc.

Comment #126Wilson hasn’t looked right since the world Cup
But then I always feel his movement isn’t always the best anyway he seems attracted to the big centre back and gets dominated every time
Rarely see him coming short or running into the channels to link up the play up
Although I would be confident if he has a decent chance he will mostly finish them off but the way we play and the way he plays means we can’t actually create good chances for him

Europa league would still be many more matches requiring a bigger better squad so we might as well be in the top European competition.

Comment #132Curious to know why people thought Trossard would pick Arsenal over us though? Of course there is Ashworth but that means hee haw
Trossard lives in Brighton so wouldn’t need to leave the area or its a short move to London
Arsenal are still a much bigger draw than us no matter how you swing it he’s getting a league winners medal potentially as it stands and guaranteed champions league which is what he wants
Some players still won’t be convinced of the project they still might see us a flash in the pan etc and if we can’t sort goal scoring out they might be right!!!
All to play for hope we get the players we need before the end of the window

Comment #135Wilson is a fine striker , he’ll come good and a striker isn’t what we need . We need maxi tearing at defences. We need Isak up front in the cup. We need Eddie to rotate the wingers here and there and we need one new purple,Maddison

Comment #141Wilson had 2-3 opportunities he should have scoered against Fulham. He is not in his best form at the moment. He does not look as sharp as he does at his best. Haaland would have scored a lot of goals in our team. Our problem is not creating opportunities, we need to be more clinical.

Comment #143Wilson had one really good effort against CP but again it was straight at the GK.
If it had gone in we would be having a different conversation now.

The frustration levels in the EGB household were going into meltdown at the number of corners we had with no converts.
Something that Eddie really has to look at.

For me I would freshen the whole front 3 up if I could
ASM, Isak and one more not really sure who though
To be fair Murphy has done more than Almiron and ASM in his last few appearances that cross he put in yesterday should have been converted but then he is also so inconsistent
Guessing Fraser is also in the departure lounge ready to go?

Comment #148Also would take Trippier off corners for a bit and try someone néw
A winger or a midfielder whip it in with pace rather than floated in
Bruno or Almiron to take a corner instead

My last post to Clint Flick when i referenced you in relation to the golf was only me having a bit of craic mate, but my other posts in my defence of Shearer being a very professional and unbiased co commenator were very serious. Are you and Peter the Pug and DR Gloom heading to the semi final on tuesday mate?

Comment #155I’m not sure Maddison is for sale (or that we are after him) either. Maybe Leicester have made it clear that his goals and assists are worth more to them, to help keep them up, than a transfer fee. If he was available maybe there’d be more than just us in for him (in fact Chelsea would’ve bought him just so we couldn’t)

Comment #160I don’t think for one moment that Eddie will sign any Premiership English player that’s got an injury or attitude problem. Team United is everything. More likely to get some ‘on the verge’ of stepping up to the standard needed player and one that other players can along with coaching staff can nurture to greater things.
