The Premier League takes a break once again as Newcastle’s next two matches are against Southampton in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. The first leg takes place on Tuesday night at St Mary’s with the second one week later at St. James’ Park.
This cup competition is the lone bright spot in an otherwise dismal campaign for the Saints, who lost 1-0 at home to Aston Villa yesterday to remain rock bottom of the Premier League.
It’s a polar opposite feeling up north as Newcastle are having their best season in a decade with a chance to make it a historic one. Newcastle are rooted in the top four of the league and have silverware in their sights.
Southampton are the next focal point for Eddie Howe and the Magpies. Coming away from St Mary’s on Tuesday in good shape for the return leg is the aim. A multiple-goal victory would ease any angst on Tyneside.
Newcastle need to quickly solve their goalscoring woes for any hopes of an easier second leg. Goals have been in short supply – except when playing Leicester City – since football returned after the World Cup break. More struggles finding the back of the net against Southampton could prove costly.
The other end of the pitch has been nothing short of sensational as Newcastle continue to keep clean sheets. Southampton are the last club to breach Howe’s preferred eleven with Romain Perraud’s late strike in early November.
The Magpies continue to be very difficult to breach but goals are going to be needed for a Wembley final. Hopefully, the lads can take their frustration in front of the net out on the struggling Saints on Tuesday.

Comment #163Would you bring Mitro back ?
He’s grown up, is more physical, wants to emulate Shearer and could thrive on the service other players now provide.

Bill i share your frustration about corners mate, when you look at the height and stature of that Newcastle team, it`s crazy we don`t get a lot more goals from corner`s and free kicks, it really is a dilemma and very hard to work out Bill, even under the old regime we seemed to be more dangerous at corners with Kieran Clarke and Lascelles, i also don`t see the logic of Big Dan Burn standing on the goal line for every corner, it`s a real head scratcher Bill.

Comment #166Loch. No. He is getting on a bit and a battering ram. It may work further down the league, but to beat the top guys, you need more.

Comment #169Magic. Compare and contrast corners.
Arsenal ran in and hit hard. We stand there, jump up, win header but no power as we have not run on to it.

Comment #170A floated corner, static header of the ball, where does the goal come from? Or does goalkeeper just say ” Thank you very much”?

Aye as someone said a few days ago any shortarse can stand on the line to impede the GK, you need the likes of BDB and Cybot running in to give impetus for a jump.

Comment #176Magic – I donāt disagree on Shearer completely but I have definitely seen his bias creep in sometimes. I think heās pretty fair though.
I just disagree on Neville as I think heās similar to Shearer in terms of being fair, in a way that Keane, Wright, and Carragher cannot be.
We can agree to disagree though.
Regarding the semi-final, I have said no to tickets in the Southampton end so wonāt be going unless someone ends up with a spare ticket due to a late cancellation from someone. Itās bad enough being in the wrong end for a league game but I really donāt fancy being there for a cup game. Itās so important to us fans. Iāll watch on TV unless I pull a rabbit out of the hat and get a ticket somehow.

Peter i would safely say we haven`t improved at corners one iota despite having some very big players, and i was expecting us to score lots of goals this year from corners and set piece`s, you make a good analogy about the Arsenal game today, we clearly need to come up with a different strategy and a different plan of action, as our present thinking on corners has become stale and predictable Peter.

It`s always good to agree to disagree mate, that`s what the blog is all about fella, and everyone is entitled to their opinion at the end of the day. On the Southampton game why don`t you go TDS, i understand you`re preference would be to be in the Newcastle end, but failing that at least you will still see the game live at Saint Marys even if it`s in the Southampton end.

Someone should make a film about them if they win the title.

Comment #188The majority of todays posters probably contributed to Martoon’s invitation to predict the the result of NUFC’s 2022/2023 season.
I didn’t participate in the project because I was in hospital at that time. However, I remember reading the predictions and being somewhat surprised to read the high level of of pessimistic opinions regarding the progress of the team!
If my memory serves me well, I think the average prediction was 8th. In spite of finishing 11th last season (2021/2022) most of our points being accumulated after Xmas.
People have short memories…

Big Dan is great at heading the ball out in defensive areas, but he is serving no purpose standing on the goal line for every corner, he needs to be further out from goal so he can attack the ball mate, i just think we need to be a little bit more inventive, and show more imagination at corners and set pieces, it might just reap more rewards mate.

I understand your thinking as regards the match on Tuesday, i hope we get a very favourable result in the 1st leg to take back to Saint James, someone said on here today Man Utd were a poor team and if we get to the final he would rather meet them than Forest š š I must be losing it, as i still haven`t figured that one out š š

Comment #194raj @180 is that not the biggest clue. i know it is controversial but i dont think a “traditional Striker” suits us anymore. we have evolved as a team and they need to be agile, press high, have some ball skills.
We have one of the tallest defences in the league ( minus trippier but he is usually taking the corners anyway) if we get those lads active and more importantly effective and accurate in corners there goes the need for a great header of the ball.
Also with Miggy and Willock being speed merchants someone needs to keep up with them. Ultimately i think thats why woods looked out of sorts for us. Wilson is starting to slow down…
i am not proposing a false 9 like Barcelona of old but i don’t think we will get a traditional front man either.
