Howe Makes One Bold Change In Our Predicted Team For Southampton

Newcastle’s recent lack of prowess in front of goal is a point of intrigue heading into Tuesday’s first-leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at Southampton. The Magpies have created plenty of chances but just haven’t had their finishing boots on in recent weeks.

That could lead Eddie Howe to alter his team tomorrow. Conventional wisdom is Howe will go with his preferred eleven. However, tweaking the lineup could spark the desired result of more goals.

I suspect Howe will make a bold change by dropping Callum Wilson and handing a start to Alexander Isak. It would be harsh on Wilson but giving him a break may benefit the 30-year-old in the long run.

This is the team I am predicting Howe will select with just the one change at the top of the pitch. It would be Isak’s first league start since the 1-1 draw against Bournemouth in September.

It would have been a bald change if Shelvey had started

This is getting ridiculous isn’t there 1 striker 1 midfielder 1 full back 1 centre back out there we can sign even on loans?

Arsenal, Newcastle and Chelsea keen on Onana

Everton have FFP issues and now need to finance a new manager. Hardly see them selling their best player, but would be good.

I dont mind the initial 433 as we have been keeping loads of clean sheets. However from 70th minutes onwards I want to see more risk with 4231 with isak play off a striker like wilson asm on left almiron on right and go to win the game. Or change it around like isak up top asm left murphy right almiron n10 but with 2 midfielders like bruno and joelinton instead of 3

If you want more goals I’m not sure you’d drop a centre forward who was so good just a few weeks ago that he forced his way into England’s World Cup squad, and the player who leads our press so well. We aren’t talking Chris Wood here.

I understand the calls for Isak to start, but not for Wilson. We want more goals then play them both, and St Max, in a 4231.

    …………………….Pope.
    Trippier…..Schar….Botman…Burn.
    ……………..Bruno….Joel.
    ….Miggy…………Isak……..St Max.
    ……………………Wilson.

Very tough on Willock and Longstaff though, who are simply going from strength to strength.

What we don’t know is what Wilson has been ill with ?
    Covid ?
Some Qatari flu or desert infection ?
A bad dose of the flu that’s been doing the rounds

Or a combination of all three

Whatever he’s had the outcome is fatigue, loss of energy, malaise.
Just takes time and more vitamins to get back to full strength.
    Hopefully soon

“He had an illness after the World Cup. With Callum, he’s missed big chunks of training, and I think that always affects your sharpness as a player, regardless of position. Callum’s worked really hard for the team, and knowing him as I do, the goals are just around the corner.”

Howe could possibly start with both Isak and Wilson and if either needs to be replaced, change the formation back to 433. Would be a strong starting line-up and get the lead early??

Isak know hows to press…he’ll be just as good as Wilson at leading the press and 10 times better than ASM if he plays on the left because ASM does nowt but expose BDB who is too slow to be left with no cover.

If we play ASM then we take away the attacking positives because as soon as he goes down and sits on his arse for a minimum of 30 seconds waving his hands like he’s trying to land a jet on aircraft carrier then we’re 10 v 11 and we’re on the back foot.

    Not a bad alternative:

    ——–Isak—Wilson—Murphy
    Joelinton—Longstaff—Willock
    Burn—Botman—Schar—Manquillo
    ——————Pope
