Howe Responds To Transfer Claims On Three Of His Players

Eddie Howe was asked about some of his players that have been the subject of transfer speculation in recent weeks. It’s been reported that both Ryan Fraser and Karl Darlow are free to leave this month with the pair both keen on more playing time.

Fraser reportedly asked to leave in the summer but the inability to add a wide player scuttled any chance of his leaving. With the winter window open, the 28-year-old could be allowed to depart to clear room for new arrivals.

Fraser has not made a matchday squad in the league since Boxing Day leading to speculation he will be moved on this month. Howe was asked about Fraser’s recent absences during this morning’s press conference and provided the following:

“No, he’s not injured. He’s training. He’s just got to keep training well. Keep training hard.

“He’s a valued member of the squad. I know Ryan better than anybody and I know what he’s capable of.

“I’d love to see him back in a Newcastle shirt.”

There seems to be little outside interest in a permanent move for Fraser. Though there are reportedly a number of clubs, both Premier League and Championship, that could be interested in a loan.

Fraser has made just 8 appearances this season with the emergence of Miguel Almiron on the right wing limiting his chances. Jacob Murphy has also blossomed as an impact substitute dropping Fraser down the pecking order.

Karl Darlow has been linked with a loan move to Hull City. The Tigers are looking to add competition for Matt Ingram with Chelsea loanee Nathan Baxter back at Stamford Bridge rehabbing an elbow injury.

Howe was asked about Darlow’s future. He didn’t rule out a move for the long-serving 32-year-old but suggested nothing was imminent saying:

“There’ll be no one going out before tomorrow. We assess the squad on a daily basis and depending on what’s happening, there’s lots of noise and lots of things going on, but we certainly want to keep the squad intact.”

Darlow is likely to leave this month with Loris Karius extended until the summer. It will be interesting to see who the backup is tomorrow with Martin Dubravka cup-tied. Karius has not made a matchday squad since before the World Cup break.

The head coach was also asked about the rumor that Turkish club Besiktas was close to signing Jonjo Shelvey. Howe refuted that claim stating the following:

“I’ve been surprised at all the speculation.

“I’ve got no idea where that has come from. It’s certainly not come from us. Jonjo is a very valued member of the squad.”

The only issue with those stats are that they comment on the quality of chance, not the quality of the players finishing. We may therefore be performing at the exact level we should as our players might not have the required finishing ability.

I do think we need to create more chances, particularly the type around 6 yard box which the elite teams do, but we also really need to improve our finishing as those stats really support.

The £5 a month is a standard price. I recently signed up for a fee of £2/month for the first 12 months. I feel robbed knowing it’s available for £1 now.

I see Sky Sports are saying that Lampard will be dismissed today!

Oh and that will impact on a possible move from us for A Gordon………

I bloody hope so – sorry but we must be able to find a better player who has a better temperament than that guy!

If Newcastle should sign him I’d be very disappointed but I’d have to accept that situation!

Please sign someone other like Maddison for example!!!

    JohnJ… and others

Where does the negative image of Gordon come from? I can’t say I follow him super closely but I’ve not seen much to back up the claims a lot of people make.

Given so many see it, I’m definitely assuming I’m missing something that others see, but it would be good for somebody to help me out haha!

I think it will make it easier to sign Gordon. They are skint and he’s their most valuable asset. Perhaps it was the manager who wanted to keep him.

Big Dunc is going back to Everton I reckon, and he’ll probably keep them up.

Callum Wilson suffers from lack of service from the wide men. Miggy always cuts in onto his left foot an I don’t recall any good service from the left. I would start Murphy on the right with an instruction to get crosses in for Wilson! Boom! Isak as a sub after 70 mins! Goals goals goals!

TS; agreed, that’s why we need to improve our finishing.
We hit the target with 33.4% of our chances. That’s the 14th best in the league. Man City are just above us.
We have the fourth highest amount of shots, 287.
We are 7th in terms of the number of shots on target, with 96.
Goal scored per shot on target is around 33%.
Most teams are around about this mark. The exceptions being the top two ( around 40%) and the teams in the relegation dog fight (around 20%).

    T Sage,

That player is a big winger – if I recall correctly he did his utmost to get one of our lads sent off when his team played up here earlier this season. He has football talent so he really has no need to behave like that – he should let his boots do the talking for him and I don’t mean by kicking opposition players!

Him and his former team mate Ricarlison are two of the worst whingeing players in the EPL. 🙁
