Newcastle Appear To Have Come Up Short In Pursuit Of Young Brazilian

Newcastle have had a second bid for Flamengo wonderkid Matheus Franca rejected according to a Brazilian report cited by Sport Witness. Newcastle made their move for the 18-year-old last week with an offer of £14m.

That bid was rejected with negotiations continuing over the weekend. However, it now appears Newcastle’s second offer has been rejected with Flamengo’s demands proving too much for a compromise.

It was noted last week that Flamengo wanted £18m for their versatile youngster, which put Newcastle just £4m short of landing a budding superstar. Newcastle’s second offer was reportedly only slightly higher than their first one and soundly rejected.

Flamengo are also demanding a sell-on clause of 50% of any future sale be included in the deal. It appears Newcastle have balked at both the fee and the added clause with a third bid unexpected.

The report also has the following comment from Flamengo director Marcos Braz, who would not confirm Newcastle’s bid:

“We did not put Matheus França up for sale. He is not for sale. Flamengo are not interested in negotiating Matheus França at this moment.”

Newcastle’s pursuits of two promising 18-year-olds may have come up short. It was reported earlier today that Real Valladolid’s Ivan Fresneda will head to either Arsenal or Dortmund with Newcastle out of the running.

I’ve not seen much of Gordon to have an opinion. He played well against us once and seems to be the type that opposition fans love to hate. It would be great though to see the Everton fans reaction, if we did sign him and he was a runaway success. 🙂

“People call it the dark arts of the game. I don’t and never want that from nufc.”

This is another of our positive signs. All my life, we’ve been at the bottom of the league in this regard.

All of a sudden, we’re amongst the best. No coincidence.

Just need to up our game at a few elements – we don’t seem to moan at the ref much and we haven’t had a winner in the 99th minute- and we’ll be there.

Toonarmy of Frogs good post about Gordon – just about sums him up nicely.

Munster – Almiron was playing above his average level earlier in the season so that was never gonna last. We’ve known about these problems since the beginning of the season though, it’s one reason I predicted 8th as our finish. Our defence is bloody excellent but we were always going to struggle to score goals comparatively.

Let’s be honest…Miggy’s goal return was a surprise to us all, Joelinton wouldn’t be expected to score many, and there aren’t that many goals in midfield.

This is also why I’ve said we’re overachieving. I wanted to sign a winger in the summer and I still do.

Swapping players on different sides doesn’t make much sense though. Eddie doesn’t have to do that in a match, for fans to see it, in order to decide if it would work or not. He can try that in training and look at all sorts of metrics about those players to decide if it’s worth doing.

Ash – that would be an attitude or tactical issue then. I didn’t notice the specific incident though, you sure he didn’t go down injured or something?

I don’t have a problem with an attacker focusing on attacking either.

TDS @ 23, no disagreement from me with anything you’ve said. Although I will say, I find it very difficult to believe that Isak can’t give us more than 15-20 minutes right now. Instead, we are pushing a very injury-prone Wilson, while his contribution has been limited, at best.

Again, thrilled with everything that has been accomplished this season so far. But it does feel like at times, Eddie is hesitant to make changes. Joelinton and Wilson up front isn’t really working. From my recollection, I feel like we’ve played better with Joelinton in midfield with Bruno.

WLtoon, Adam, Regarding Gordon, I posted 2 weeks ago that I thought Eddie fancied buying him, Personality I think he,s a bit of a dick, but he,s only 21, and if he was to move away from scouse land I think Eddie and his team could massively improve him. Also I think the mentality of the likes of Trippier,Schar,Laselles etc… would change his attitude and immaturity. He has played for the England young ins and a lot of Premier league games so at his age if we can get him for £30 million he could be a good buy IMO. Anyway I can see good and bad,but in Eddie we trust. My prediction for tomorrow Southampton 0 – 2. Newcastle, ps I,m rubbish at predictions, lol. Cheers GWH

DKillers – I’d like to see Joelinton at LW very occasionally. It’s the position I’d most like to see us strengthen this January unless ASM is suddenly going to kick into gear. Bruno, Joelinton, Willock, and Longstaff as central midfield options is decent enough, although we need more depth there to cover for injuries.

I do agree that is strange how little time Isak is getting. He offers a lot more than Wilson so I’d love to see him get more minutes. He’s probably working up to match fitness though, he was out for quite a long time. He’s got into some great positions when he has played but has looked a little rusty to me.

A coach can use all the metrics they want but the reality is that miggy is not as effective on the right currently, and consistently has to cut inside. It’s too predictable. ASM had some good games for us on the right. Metrics can only be part of the analysis. The chance to ask different questions of teams is being lost and I think its the wrong approach.

so we’re buying a striker who doesn’t score many goals from a team at the bottom of the league? i take it Everton don’t want him, he doesn’t cost much and won’t mind being third choice?

I thought a lot of teams play with inverted wide men these days, certainly the top 4 at the moment all do. Although miggy’s goals have dried up recently he’s still created some good opportunities on that side.
Howe has also varied it by bringing Murphy on for almiron in the last couple of games.
