This is the team Eddie Howe has named for tonight’s cup semi-final at Southampton. It is an unchanged side from the scoreless draw at Crystal Palace over the weekend.
Howe has opted to not make any changes once again. He’ll have Allan Saint-Maximin and Alexander Isak in reserve for the second half. Karl Darlow gets the nod as the backup despite his potential exit later this month.
Here is who Nathan Jones will send out for the Saints with local lad Adam Armstrong on the bench.
Despite this only being the first leg, it’ll be a nervous night for Newcastle fans. This is the first cup semi-final in close to two decades. The priority tonight is to set up a comfortable second leg at St. James’ Park in one week.

Comment #1He was never ever hoping to drop Wilson for Isak.
What this does do is give Wilson a shot in the arm and a confidence boost to go out and score.
It should also give Isak more hunger to score when he does cone on.
It also protects him, there is no harm in bringing him back slowly, no matter if its been a month now or not, he’s definitely still not 100% fit, Howe himself said it yesterday that it takes time to be back 100%.

Comment #10Isak will get loads more starts towards the back end of the season with a view of being 1st choice next season I reckon, can’t just drop Wilson because Isak came in,but wilson is going to be the replacement for Wood, but better and more reliable going forward, for now I’m fine with the way Eddie is working, he knows more than me,which to be fare isn’t hard lol

Comment #14Sensible team selection. You can find a way to include Isak and even StMax too, in say a 4231, and you’ll get the extra goal threat we’ve been missing, but you of course then risk undermining our fantastic defence, and of course we are away too. Take a draw here, or better a narrow win

Comment #29Chelsea have been bringing in starry-eyed young players and then selling them on for years. I think this “players as comodities to sell on for a profit” has just gone in to overdrive. The American hedgefund model.
This is where Gordon is going to end up with Chelsea willing to lone him back to Everton.

Comment #32I see Isak as talented, but I don’t see him as better than Wilson at this stage, at all, and I definitely think we paid over the odds. I hope he becomes a regular starter, but I wouldn’t say it was imminent.

Comment #35Southampton are improving under Jones, seems very much in the Eddie Howe school of management just without the experience of top flight. They’ve also made a couple of decent signings in comparison to what they had.
Saying that I fancy is to win tonight. We need to be on our game as they could cause problems if complacent, guessing that’s why Howe’s gone with his experienced 11 and not made changes for Isak and ASM.
I may have preferred Isak but there’s a very good case for starting Wilson as he’s our senior striker who’s done for us, even if in a lean spell.

Comment #39Happy with that line up. I think we will see a different team that played against Palace. We shall be more ruthless in front of goal however with less chances. Again another close one. Just keep a clean sheet and hopefully Nick 1 or 2 goals. But Southampton have to come at us as it’s a 2 legged game. Will that be to their peril as we struggle with the low block 😉
