The Magpies came up empty in the first half at Southampton. In a game of little quality, Newcastle edged the opening 45 minutes but squandered a few promising chances. However Joelinton had a goal disallowed under questionable circumstances.
Newcastle were set up in a 4-3-3 with Pope in goal behind a back four of Trippier, Schar, Botman, and Burn. The midfield three were Guimaraes, Longstaff, and Willock. Joelinton was on the left with Almiron on the right. Wilson led the line.
Newcastle had a couple chances in the opening minutes. From a break, Almiron rolled the ball to a charging Willock just outside the area. With his weaker left foot, Willock shanked his shot into the stands. A minute later another opportunity went wanting with Longstaff’s low cross along the 6-yard box finding no takers.
Twenty minutes in and Newcastle were the more threatening team. Most of the opening stages were been spent in the Saints’ end though Newcastle did not fashion anything to threaten Gavin Bazunu.
Willock again skied a shot from a promising position in the 35th minute. Newcastle did well on a break with excellent one-two passing between Almiron, Longstaff, and Trippier, who launched a cross from the right to Willock in the box. The midfielder’s volley was sent high into the stands.
In the 39th minute, Newcastle had another break with Willock surging down the left. He crossed the ball into the box with Bazunu making an initial save. The ball then rebounded off Joelinton who put it into the net. The goal was disallowed with Joelinton judged to have handled the ball. Replays were inconclusive as VAR did not intervene.
Southampton were forced into a change in added time after Pope barreled over Moussa Djenepo to clear a through ball. Djenepo had to be replaced as he looked unsteady on his feet with Adam Armstrong making his entrance just before the half-time whistle.

All huff and puff
Desperately need someone to put there foot through the ball and shoot instead of tap tap around the box all the time. Apart from that playing OK well but yo many passes going astray for my liking

Get Wilson and willock off there doing nowt at all and willock 2 open goal chances missed.
If we get no player in soon this team will not stay top 6 never mind top 4.

442 – Isak n Wilson up front & ASM n Miggy on the wings. We don’t need 3 in midfield against this lot.

Wilson msy be Eddie’s first choice but he’s way off the pace, get Isak on and Max for Willock

They might as well scrap VAR,if they are NEVER going to reverse an on-field decision.
The Ref’s screen has to go,at the very least…

Someone said, corrupt officials. I agree. VAR has all the angles, why did they not give the goal? Doesn’t matter what the ref thinks he’s seen, VAR is supposed to help him with big decisions.

NUFC back 4 (+GK) Invincible!

Lee, don’t worry, Eddie will give Isak and ASM at least 10 minutes at the end. Right before we finish another one at 0-0.

We are the better team just need a 442 or 4231 later in 2nd half. Give Wilson a strike partner

Richest league in the world yet they cant afford 4k cameras to zoom in and out and see best angles for that. Embarassing

We Are by far the best team and should have scored. keep going and the we will score for sure, Southampton have looked vulnerable and gives away a lot of space.

Dominating again, just still lacking that crucial touch in front of goal. I feel like the ref should have been asked to see that disallowed goal. Give him the same angles and ask if he’s happy to keep his decision as it’s too tough to call.

Anyone know if away goals count in the Semi – just hoping we can get a couple to make it safer!
BTW does anyone feel we should have had a pen in the disallowed goal (re Wilson brought down)

Longstaff could have played it back in towards Wilson, Miggy did well though

If this tie finishes in anything less than a Toon win, then expect next weeks home tie to see Southampton park the bud and play for penalties.
