The Magpies came up empty in the first half at Southampton. In a game of little quality, Newcastle edged the opening 45 minutes but squandered a few promising chances. However Joelinton had a goal disallowed under questionable circumstances.
Newcastle were set up in a 4-3-3 with Pope in goal behind a back four of Trippier, Schar, Botman, and Burn. The midfield three were Guimaraes, Longstaff, and Willock. Joelinton was on the left with Almiron on the right. Wilson led the line.
Newcastle had a couple chances in the opening minutes. From a break, Almiron rolled the ball to a charging Willock just outside the area. With his weaker left foot, Willock shanked his shot into the stands. A minute later another opportunity went wanting with Longstaff’s low cross along the 6-yard box finding no takers.
Twenty minutes in and Newcastle were the more threatening team. Most of the opening stages were been spent in the Saints’ end though Newcastle did not fashion anything to threaten Gavin Bazunu.
Willock again skied a shot from a promising position in the 35th minute. Newcastle did well on a break with excellent one-two passing between Almiron, Longstaff, and Trippier, who launched a cross from the right to Willock in the box. The midfielder’s volley was sent high into the stands.
In the 39th minute, Newcastle had another break with Willock surging down the left. He crossed the ball into the box with Bazunu making an initial save. The ball then rebounded off Joelinton who put it into the net. The goal was disallowed with Joelinton judged to have handled the ball. Replays were inconclusive as VAR did not intervene.
Southampton were forced into a change in added time after Pope barreled over Moussa Djenepo to clear a through ball. Djenepo had to be replaced as he looked unsteady on his feet with Adam Armstrong making his entrance just before the half-time whistle.

Comment #283Isak has it all, the complete package! Unbelievable that he is our player! Maxi and Isak has to start the next game. A front trio with maxi Isak and almiron will cause havoc! HWTL

Comment #286Dazzler – he’s misplaced loads of passes. Did better when Isak and Maxi came on but has been pretty poor for his standards.

Comment #290Joelinton back into his preferred midfield. Maxi, very impressively learning to play team ball, goes back in starting lineup. And how can you keep Isak out of the starting 11 any longer?!

Comment #293A full week of intense training should hopefully see Wilson back up to speed and Isak up to full fitness. We should be a totally different prospect next week.
We get the 3 players in we’re currently talking to and we’re flying, even though Gordon will be cup tied (assuming he comes)

Comment #295Got to start Maxi on left at home, Big Joe more involved when in the middle.
It hurts me to say it but Wilson not moving well, Isak looked a threat when he came on.
Just my opinion
We should of been out of sight in this leg.

Comment #297There are some people on here who think you should back every player regardless how rubbish they are. Ediie got it spot on replacing the two weakest players.
Max and Isak made a massive difference. Wilson has never ever created a goal like that

Comment #298Great result, and you can clearly see Isak`s predatory instincts, he was the game changer no doubt about it, although ASM played very well also, if Eddie doesn`t intend playing both Wilson and Isak then it has to be Isak as he offers so much more threat. For me Fabian Schar was motm, the guy was just sublime a class act.

Comment #299Commentators really dont like us! I think we bossed this game for the large part as we did against Palace.
Could have won that 0-3 quite comfortably

Comment #302Yep, we bossed the game, but if it wasn’t for Pope we’d have been in Ashingtoon’s cow muck
