The first leg of Newcastle’s Carabao Cup semi-final at Southampton is fast approaching. The club have a great chance at a Wembley final but must overcome the Saints first.
Newcastle enter the match with a bit of an issue in front of the goal. The team has created plenty of chances but finishing them has proved difficult in recent weeks.
Eddie Howe may opt to freshen up his eleven by replacing Callum Wilson with Alexander Isak at the top of the pitch. I suspect he may do just that and field the following team tonight.
The injury situation on Tyneside has significantly improved. Their are just three Magpies ruled out tonight with a fourth, Martin Dubravka, ineligible after playing in the competition during his loan spell at Manchester United.
Southampton also have just three players injured. They have just recalled defender Jan Bednarek from his loan at Villa Park. The Pole is eligible to play tonight.
Newcastle Injuries
Emil Krafth (knee), Jonjo Shelvey (calf), Matt Targett (heel), Martin Dubravka (cup-tied)
Southampton Injuries
Juan Larios (muscular), Tino Livramento (knee), Stuart Armstrong (groin)
Our poll shows that fans remain optimistic of another excellent result. Well over 90% of voters expect Newcastle to leave St Mary’s in excellent shape for the second leg next Tuesday. The priority tonight is to set the stage for a comfortable night in one week.

Comment #42This Gordon deal will happen. There is too much noise for it to be fake. The player wants to leave. Chelsea have a whole team of midfielders/wingers and they need to offload. A loan deal with them would do but they might not want to help out a rival

I think you are making judgements on Chelsea that none of us are in a position to do,
I think The Athletic called them a miney making machine, and if its true that things get stringent re spending and transfers, they will have acted very prudently.
They are not overpaying across the board either. Badiashile looks as good as Botman on U tube, and he isnt overpriced. Neither is Madueke. In fact if anyone overpaid, we probably did on Isak
And as someone said earlier, if we had got Mudryk ( yes very pricey but a stellar eurpean winger) , we’d be loving our ambition levels. He is a player with a serious ridiculous ceiling and Chelsea , I have no doubt, will cause us a pile of issues as they chase top 3 next season.
We need to respond, now or in the summer
I think we tyre kicked too long about Pedro for the sake of 5 mill , and I think if he had played V Sheff Weds, we might have got in the next round of the FA Cup

Comment #50Tinos – “Starting 2022/23, clubs will be able to loan out only eight players a season. This number will reduce to six by 2024/25.”
So Chelsea’s previous business model just won’t work. If they have to sell players, it will be a buyer’s market as they’ll know that Chelsea have to sell or leave a player out of the squad. If any of these players don’t work out for them, it’s a buyer’s market again, they can say to Chelsea, “Ok, you’re stuck with this guy for 6 more years @ £8m a year or you sell him cheaply to us and we’ll take on his wages”.
It’s very risky.

Comment #52Munster, explain that statement. Mudryk ( yes very pricey but a stellar eurpean winger).
Rated £1M last year, not played much since. No experience in a major league. A big, big risk in my opinion. However, time will tell.

Comment #53I think we will get Gordon, and he could be excellent under Howe, and better off away from his home City.
I hope his sh1t accent doesnt annoy Schar though 🙂
Mind you, Tuff said it was all made up didnt he?
And he’d know, because he has access to all info via the magic pool ball in his mouth and the various comms systems in his sex dungeon ( which, by the way, only contains gold olde British nipple clamps and British canes and straps and British rubber suits. None of that foreign muck! )

Comment #54Pug his pace and trickery are superb. At full speed he’s a Ferrari, and the seller had two ambitious bidders. They said from the start publicly that he was worth 100million, and they did business well by getting competing bidders, and Chelsea, who want to spend spend spend
I do think Gordon could do some damage for us though – he is an Eddie player, and could be a super signing.

Comment #59AP – the retirement age has been 68 for a few years (it effects me). But for now is 27 years off.
I anticipate (for me) in years to come it’ll be pushed onto 70 as governments just waste so much cash, and they keep juggling the scales to try and balance
Probably want to retire at 60. But that’s on me since the state pension is ever moving. Probably end up working forever

Comment #60Newcastle are fcuking up this transfer window, play it smarter NUFC.
Seems like every player we go after Chelsea purchase, so Newcastle please start going after complete crap, maybe Chelsea will purchase them and we can slide right into what we want. Sneaky but worth it.
And just so some understand and we all know who they are, self appointed blog mafia, this was meant in jest and not in any way derogatory towards NUFC.
You watch, just like flys around shit they will come sniffing.

Comment #63AP – Under the Pensions Act 2007 the State Pension age for men and women will increase from 67 to 68 between 2044 and 2046. The Pensions Act 2014 provides for a regular review of the State Pension age, at least once every five years.

Comment #65An intriguing update has arrived on Everton’s Anthony Gordon and Amadou Onana; two players who’ve been strongly linked with late moves to St James’ Park over the past 24 hours.
As revealed by Sky Sports News, BOTH players were nowhere to be seen at Finch Farm today, missing training sessions taken by Paul Tait and Leighton Baines following Frank Lampard’s dismissal.
Hmm, here’s some cash, Fraser and Lashelles to help out your defense.

Comment #66For tonight’s match, I’m thinking Eddie will put out whatever he thinks is our strongest side to start. Rotating for the cup no longer applies for this match and the next. We don’t have a match during the coming weekend to worry about. Play our best side. No player will be rested unless injured. Maybe he starts Max but this is only if he wants to give Soton something else to think about from the start. HWTL!

Think you are right. If a selling club allows the buying club to pay on a lengthy drip, how can UEFA or someone else to say this isn’t fair? So long as the fee gets paid according to the transfer contract then it is just an expenditure. If you do this for too many players then they just have many long obligations and it limits them in future years. Selling club may also have negotiated a higher total fee so the buying club pays more than if a shorter term. Can’t see this as a breach of FFP and don’t see UEFA being able to enforce a change.

Comment #77If Bielsa gets the Everton job though you can see him playing Gordon, so I quite hope he doesn’t take them on. Everton right now is a total shambles though, so you can easily see Bielsa saying no, and a whole raft of players wanting out, perhaps Gordon among them, who must already be very unhappy.

Comment #79I feel we need to figure out a way to get ASM back in the team. We’re not scoring much and not creating clear cut chances. He’s our match winner and before his injury he was on fire.
On Johnson. I find this a strange one. He can’t get in a terrible everton team and has only had half a good season in the last 4 years.
I’m sure the club know a lot more than me about him and if they want him, then they must see something. But I definitely can’t see what it is.
