Newcastle have entered talks for Everton attacker Anthony Gordon according to Craig Hope in The Mail. The Magpies are also engaged in discussions with at least two European clubs over unnamed targets.
The noise around Gordon has intensified in recent days. The dismissal of manager Frank Lampard seems to have spurred the Magpies into action. The 21-year-old is now seemingly the primary target this window.
Hope cites sources that state an offer of £25m plus £15m in add-ons could clinch an agreement with the cash-starved Toffees. That is significantly less than the £60m price tag Everton set in the summer.
Chelsea are also interested despite adding wide attackers Mykhaylo Mudryk and Noni Madueke in the past week. The Blues are in a transfer frenzy this month as UEFA are set to tighten FFP regulations in the summer.
Eddie Howe has expressed his desire for additions this month though admitted there are no guarantees. He is reportedly after a versatile forward, a midfielder, and a young right-back. The mystery targets in Europe could fulfill those needs.
The Shields Gazette is reporting that Newcastle have been knocked back in a bid for summer target Harrison Ashby. The right-back has just 6 months left on his contract with West Ham rejecting whatever offer Newcastle put forth.

Comment #43FFP is dead after this season isn’t it? Being replaced by something stricter based on player costs so Chelsea and their 8 year contracts would mean jack sh*t going forward.
If their players flop then they are royally screwed, if they don’t get CL in the near future then they are royally screwed. It’s not smart, it’s desperate.
Given the number of wingers that Chelsea have hoovered up recently Gordon would end up out on loan so why not join us and be guaranteed game time. I reckon Howe prefers his type of winger to a maxi so could see him usurping him in the pecking order if he trains hard and plays well.

Haven’t seen the plan you mention bit I suspect it’s old hat.
The new Arena will be across the fiver near the Sage
The old site is already earmarked for housing and leisure
Our owners have stated that SJP is staying put.
They will find a way to get capacity up to about 68,000 tops.
The City thrives on the business generated on match days.
Any club can have an anonymous out of town stadium.
SJP is unique .
First rule of business ‘protect your core’ .

I do see what you’re saying but I can’t see it as anything other than one monumental risk. It all relies on those buys turning good, being able to sell players in the next few windows for good money, still qualifying for European competitions and that Potter and these signings work together.
I can’t help but see it as anything other than a new owner shutting his eyes and throwing the equivalent of darts at a dartboard and hoping for a bullseye. There’s no logic. Even the signings they’ve made have made the squad stupidly unbalanced.

Good point on potential leading into valuation.
Transfer fees are horrible things and almost always just made up. There aren’t set metrics that determine value.
You need to consider attributes like ability, experience, age, adaptability, etc…. Then you consider contractual things like length on current contract, release clause, etc… Then it’s the desperation of the buying club to strengthen and money available, with the reverse for the selling club, desperation for cash/circumstances…. Then has the player tried to force a move and downed tools… Then other things like do the selling club want to be seen to be fair. If your business model is buying and developing young players to sell on, you won’t attract the next group if you don’t let people leave in a way perceived to be fair to bigger clubs.
Simply put, value is so arbitrary in football. It sometimes even just comes down to hype… a few good performances in a champions league group stage and your value can double (Mudryk is a great example).

Comment #52Oh yeah and on top of all that, Chelsea have let the whole world know that they will happily pay well over the odds for players. So good luck to them getting a decent deal for a quality player down the line.

Comment #53Also £25m for a young winger with prem experience is a snip really and the £15m in add-ons would only come into effect if the transfer works out (I imagine appearances, goals and European qualifications come into play here).
It’s a better deal for us than them, but then again they are desperate for the lowey and we aren’t.

It’s only really Mudryk they overpaid for in Jan isn’t it?
Badiashile was only £30m or so (similar age and fee to Botman), Madueke was something similar. Given their age and potential I don’t think they are particularly massive fees.
It’s the fees in the summer that are the mental ones, Fofana and Cucurella in particular.

The Felix loan as well was mental money for a short term loan. Then like you say their summer business. If you’re a club that has a quality player, you phone Chelsea now and ask them for £20m over their actual value lol

He certainly looks like he has the potential to be a star.
But they paid £80m for a player who’s only played in the Ukranian League for a couple of years.
That’s an insane amount for a player who’s relatively unproven.
In a couple of seasons he may be worth that but certainly not now.

Give him a month and fans will see he is worth every penny.
Some players are just so obviously top drawer and he is one. You can tell after a few touches. Great control at pace. If he can shoot as well 88 million will be cheap.
Most modern players cannot shoot or head. They always want to curl the ball and cannot put laces through it, And the standard of heading? Let’s not get me started. Les and Alan must be cringing

Comment #63Transfer Sage – if you look in certain places, they use algorithms to work out the value of players. Other places (like Transfermarkt) use opinions of a group of people to decide fair market value based on some of the factors you described. Then there’s obviously the desires of various parties involves in a transfer that affect his value too.
A 21 year old attacking player with PL experience like Gordon could potentially be turned into a top PL player and a regular England international. He certainly has the ability. He could be linked with a £100m transfer to Real Madrid in 3 years or he could be off on loan to Nottingham Forest to help them with their latest battle against relegation…is he a Barkley, an Alli, or a Rooney?

His debut did look extremely promising and he certainly has all the potential to be worth that much in the future. Maybe even as early as the end of the season if he impresses and does as well as you think he will do. But at the point in time Chelsea bought him, it was very much over his current valuation and they overpaid to sign him and beat Arsenal to it.

Comment #69Unless Chelsea are able to loan out approx 10-12 players, they’re gonna have a lot of unhappy bunnies sitting about causing a stink. The best thing all other teams should do is not do loan deals with them, let them sit with loads of excess players drawing a salary just to train and keep fit.
Of course the mentality in football is so short term, they’d rather take the loan players off them than totally screw them down the line – shame.
Personally I’d rather see them implode due to excess unplayable salaried players on 5-8 yr contracts. 😆

Comment #75Didn’t Chelsea pay nearly £100m (£80m plus addons or whatever) for Mudryk?
Not sure I would qualify it as a bargain mind. A lot of money for someone who’s done nowt in the league. It’s all raw potential at this stage and could come to nothing. Yes, he looks like he’ll go on to become a star but he could also falter like so many before him, and the pressure that comes with that fee certainly won’t help.

Comment #77Worst case scenario, Southampton manage to breach our defence. How many are they gonna get? With our 1st team defence in place, I think only ManC and Liverpool have put 2 or more past us. (Could be wrong).
Are Southampton capable of doing better than ManC or Liverpool – I don’t think so.
So maximum they are likely to score is 1.
Assuming we draw another blank, we get beat 1-0. I’d take that back to SJP and expect to beat them comfortably.
However, I think we’ll win tonight and take the pressure off. 🙂

Comment #78An unproven 22 year old who had a good 12-18 months in the Ukranian league should never be considered a bargain at £80m+. £40m yes, anything else is way over the odds.
It’s not like he’s Haaland who has been consistently phenomenal since he was about 16 and who went for £50m, and has smashed the prem to pieces already. That will go on to be the bargain of the century for Man City.
