Newcastle have set the stage for the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 win at Southampton. It was far from pretty but The Magpies come through unscathed with a chance for a Wembley final if they take care of business next Tuesday at St. James’ Park.
Eddie Howe made no changes after the scoreless first half. Another shot was sent high in the opening minute with Almiron, after tearing by Mohammed Salisu, squaring a pass for Longstaff in the box. The Geordie’s shot was sent over the bar.
Yet another chance was squandered in the 53rd minute. Almiron played a one-two with Longstaff to get to the byline. The Paraguayan cut inside and crossed the ball across the 6-yard box finding Joelinton in front of an open goal. He somehow sent what should have been a tap-in over the bar.
After the miss, the Saints were much improved enjoying a lengthy spell of dominance for the next ten minutes. Nathan Jones made a tactical tweak with Southampton forcing Pope into a couple of timely saves on shots by substitute Che Adams.
Howe went to his bench in the 67th minute after Adams’s second shot. Wilson and Willock came off with Alexander Isak and Allan Saint-Maximin entering the fray. The move pushed Joelinton into the midfield with Saint-Maximin taking the mantle on the left and Isak spearheading the attack.
Newcastle found their breakthrough in the 73rd minute. It was some inspirational play from Isak as he got past a Southampton defender down the right and put a perfect ball into the box. This time Joelinton didn’t miss as he powered his tap-in into the net to make it 1-0.
The euphoria was almost snuffed out as the Saints appeared to equalize through Adam Armstrong just moments later. Armstrong did very well to win the ball and then get on the end of a cross into the box. However, the ball came off his arm before it dribbled into the net. Jacob Murphy came on for Almiron after the disallowed goal.
Southampton went down to ten men when Duje Caleta-Car picked up his second booking after taking down Saint-Maximin during a jaunt up the pitch. The match had grown tempestuous over the previous few minutes with multiple bookings.
Newcastle saw out the proceedings for the 1-0 win. While the result goes in the Magpies’ favor, a chance to make the second leg a more comfortable affair was squandered. The 1-0 win will suffice as yet another clean sheet is kept.

I just wish we had buried one of the skied chances to give us a little bit extra lee way.
Howe must concentrate on our finishing or forget European football.

Very glad we got the result as we did actually start to look leggy in the second half. A little break now until the second leg will do us the world of good. What a treat it is to have difference makers to bring on off the bench for a change too! Even if ASM and Isak start soon, whoever they replace will then be strong players to have on the bench too.
Got the result we needed, can rest a bit now and then finish the job next week đ

Comment #48We need a consistent 1 in 4 midfielder.
Teams who have one or maybe even two of these go places. Helps out when the front guys are misfiring or are being marked out of the game.
in theory Miggy is that guy this season, though I fear his scoring run is like Willock’s from two seasons ago – a flash in the pan. T.B.F. his goals this year have helped paper over the cracks of a at times misfiring / unfit front line.
Just guessing here, I suspect the likes of Cabaye and Robert were 1 in 4.
Bruno was at the start of the season and probably could be if played more forward.

Comment #51We have to buy finishers. Itâs very difficult to coach finishing. How many years do you have to train to be able to finish?
If you cannot finish in your mid twenties forget it

Comment #57I actually wouldn’t be too down on the players tonight. It was a cup semi final and Southampton gave it absolutely everything they had.
A week’s rest will do the team the world of good.
P.S. Eddie give Isak and Maxi a run out from the start next time out

Comment #58Isak showed exactly what we needed his movement was amazing
ASM that’s the best he’s played in a long time nice passes and movement
Murphy was also good when he came on really good as a sub for Almiron maybe should have came on earlier as Miggy was struggling after that dodgy tackle on him

Comment #61On balance we deserved the win as we missed loads of chances. They had a 10 min purple patch second half, but not much else.
I agree with starting Isak and Maxi next week as they deserve it. But we have a few players looking a tad stale, like Bruno. The lack of rotation options will catch up with us. Itâs not about the starting 11, we need at least 16 top quality first teamers.

Comment #65Isak and Saint-Maximin need to start on Tuesday, let Wilson come off the bench.
Saint-Maximin starts instead of Willock or Longstaff, Willock has offered more recently but looks more in need of a rest. Longstaff has lost his shooting boots but has done a lot of work off the ball to allow others to influence the games.
A signing before the weekend now would make it a great week

Comment #67Ash – thatâs what makes me laugh about comments during a match! đ itâs like listening to fans in the stadium during a match, they talks utter rubbish sometimes! Shouting âour ballâ when itâs quite obviously not, complaining about a booking when itâs blatant, and getting overly excited at virtually nothing. Especially amusing when youâre seated with fans of the other club as you donât feed off their emotion at all.

Comment #77We should have won about 7-1.
Unfortunately the reason we didnât is that Willock and Longstaff (in particular) arenât capable of hitting the proverbial barn door unless itâs on the 2nd floor!
I know Joe missed a sitter too, but he scored 2 (really) so can be forgiven. Why do W and L sky every bloody shot? They didnât used to, theyâve both got history of scoring good goals regularly. Are they just trying too hard?
As it stands, if those 2 were upgraded by say Maddison and Onana (or Gordon), weâd be blowing teams apart. And as I suggested this afternoon, maybe a bit of competition is just the kick up the arse they both need.
Oh and I agree with everyone who says ASM and Isak should start next Tuesday.
Happy with result and performance, just a tad disappointed we arenât âout of sightâ. đ
