Newcastle Take Scrappy Carabao Cup Semi-Final First Leg 1-0 At Southampton

Newcastle have set the stage for the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 win at Southampton. It was far from pretty but The Magpies come through unscathed with a chance for a Wembley final if they take care of business next Tuesday at St. James’ Park.

Eddie Howe made no changes after the scoreless first half. Another shot was sent high in the opening minute with Almiron, after tearing by Mohammed Salisu, squaring a pass for Longstaff in the box. The Geordie’s shot was sent over the bar.

Yet another chance was squandered in the 53rd minute. Almiron played a one-two with Longstaff to get to the byline. The Paraguayan cut inside and crossed the ball across the 6-yard box finding Joelinton in front of an open goal. He somehow sent what should have been a tap-in over the bar.

After the miss, the Saints were much improved enjoying a lengthy spell of dominance for the next ten minutes. Nathan Jones made a tactical tweak with Southampton forcing Pope into a couple of timely saves on shots by substitute Che Adams.

Howe went to his bench in the 67th minute after Adams’s second shot. Wilson and Willock came off with Alexander Isak and Allan Saint-Maximin entering the fray. The move pushed Joelinton into the midfield with Saint-Maximin taking the mantle on the left and Isak spearheading the attack.

Newcastle found their breakthrough in the 73rd minute. It was some inspirational play from Isak as he got past a Southampton defender down the right and put a perfect ball into the box. This time Joelinton didn’t miss as he powered his tap-in into the net to make it 1-0.

The euphoria was almost snuffed out as the Saints appeared to equalize through Adam Armstrong just moments later. Armstrong did very well to win the ball and then get on the end of a cross into the box. However, the ball came off his arm before it dribbled into the net. Jacob Murphy came on for Almiron after the disallowed goal.

Southampton went down to ten men when Duje Caleta-Car picked up his second booking after taking down Saint-Maximin during a jaunt up the pitch. The match had grown tempestuous over the previous few minutes with multiple bookings.

Newcastle saw out the proceedings for the 1-0 win. While the result goes in the Magpies’ favor, a chance to make the second leg a more comfortable affair was squandered. The 1-0 win will suffice as yet another clean sheet is kept.

Showing how to keep our patience against low block away, niggling fouls, dodgy decisions, ropey finishing…to force a win…and if not, not lose.

Just need our fan base to chill now.

See the away crowd…be like that!

    Everyone happy with Isak, now?
    Good!
    😀

    Keep the faith!!!

Just for clarity, I think Willock and Longstaff have been great for us so far this season, but I don’t think they’re starters in the long term. The way we’ve been playing lately, far more of our decent chances on goal have fallen to the lads in midfield and, as someone pointed out earlier, if one of those midfielders was Maddison, we may well be breathing right down the necks of Arsenal.

Everton have been put up for sale by owner Farhad Moshiri with an asking price of £500m

Bielsa doesn’t want anything to do with them.

Gordon is in a taxi as we speak.

Very surprised you can`t remember me mentioning Nick Pope would be the best choice to sign, although to be fair you agreed with me and said he was a good keeper also. Are you still out playing winter golf lad?

£500m…. Be less than half that if they are relegated.

Total mess. With massive contracts for a new stadium.

Might even fold as a business if relegated. I’d say they almost certainly screwed

Ash it`s just a pity Henderson is not available to play in the other semi final against Manure mate as Wayne Hennessey is not in Henderson`s league, unfortunately i can see Manure getting past Forest with ease Ash.

Tbh, it’s all ifs and buts really Jane. Our grafters have got us this far, fair enough, but I’m of the opinion that if we had someone with a bit of guile and an eye for goal, it would offset the need for two water carriers.

I know that at the start of the season, most of us would’ve been cock a hoop with the idea of a top 8 finish and a clear sign of improvement to the squad. Yet here we sit in 3rd with a chance of silverware to boot, if we were to finish in 8th now with no cup, who among us wouldn’t be massively disappointed? We can all see where improvements need to be made if we’re to kick on and we have the resources to buy them. I say we drop a load of dosh in Leicesters lap to acquire Maddison – then watch the good times roll.

The Newcastle Armchair – I don’t think it’s a bias thing mate, they do it all the time. It’s stupid and lazy journalism, like the fact one team were down to 10 men for a few minutes is headline news…what?

“Newcastle beat Southampton 1-0 after both sides have goals disallowed for handballs” is a decent headline that is truthful and also makes people want to read more and find out what happened.

Very unlucky to have our goal disallowed by the way but theirs was correct to disallow it for sure.

Glad to see ASM play so well. I’ve always said we need him in the team as he’s our match winner (even though it was Isak tonight).

They both played well and it’s great that we have those options now. I wouldn’t be writing off Wilson yet, but a bit of rotation is good. Keeps players fit and hungry to play.

With Gordon looking likely and Shelvey to come back soon, things are starting to look good again. That’s some good squad depth all of a sudden.

That`s true i originally wanted us to sign Buzuna but also was singing Nick Popes praises when it became clear Buzuna wasn`t on our radar mate. No doubt you couldn`t play much golf recently with the weather, i see you were out yesterday and out tomorrow again, as for myself i`m not as keen or dedicated as yourself or Wor B or TDS, just a summer weather player mate, i will resume again in March mate.

Check – well said! I do get a bit sick of defending the club from negative comments…people claiming we need this or that, or that Howe should do this or that. FFS, let the recruitment team and Howe do their jobs and fans should just do theirs. Howe and the recruitment team have been amazing so far so why are some fans just unable to just enjoy the ride??
