Newcastle have set the stage for the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 win at Southampton. It was far from pretty but The Magpies come through unscathed with a chance for a Wembley final if they take care of business next Tuesday at St. James’ Park.
Eddie Howe made no changes after the scoreless first half. Another shot was sent high in the opening minute with Almiron, after tearing by Mohammed Salisu, squaring a pass for Longstaff in the box. The Geordie’s shot was sent over the bar.
Yet another chance was squandered in the 53rd minute. Almiron played a one-two with Longstaff to get to the byline. The Paraguayan cut inside and crossed the ball across the 6-yard box finding Joelinton in front of an open goal. He somehow sent what should have been a tap-in over the bar.
After the miss, the Saints were much improved enjoying a lengthy spell of dominance for the next ten minutes. Nathan Jones made a tactical tweak with Southampton forcing Pope into a couple of timely saves on shots by substitute Che Adams.
Howe went to his bench in the 67th minute after Adams’s second shot. Wilson and Willock came off with Alexander Isak and Allan Saint-Maximin entering the fray. The move pushed Joelinton into the midfield with Saint-Maximin taking the mantle on the left and Isak spearheading the attack.
Newcastle found their breakthrough in the 73rd minute. It was some inspirational play from Isak as he got past a Southampton defender down the right and put a perfect ball into the box. This time Joelinton didn’t miss as he powered his tap-in into the net to make it 1-0.
The euphoria was almost snuffed out as the Saints appeared to equalize through Adam Armstrong just moments later. Armstrong did very well to win the ball and then get on the end of a cross into the box. However, the ball came off his arm before it dribbled into the net. Jacob Murphy came on for Almiron after the disallowed goal.
Southampton went down to ten men when Duje Caleta-Car picked up his second booking after taking down Saint-Maximin during a jaunt up the pitch. The match had grown tempestuous over the previous few minutes with multiple bookings.
Newcastle saw out the proceedings for the 1-0 win. While the result goes in the Magpies’ favor, a chance to make the second leg a more comfortable affair was squandered. The 1-0 win will suffice as yet another clean sheet is kept.

Comment #166Maxi’s cameo illustrated perfectly why a run ragged defense, in an open game hates him coming on all fresh, late in the game, like.

Comment #169Gut tells me we’ll see some movement on player transfers tomorrow. Don’t ask me why, just my gut. But then I’ve had a stomach virus for the last day so it could just be the trots doubling down.

Comment #170Miggy was unplayable in the 1st half and had the chances he created not been wasted then the MOM vote would never be in doubt.
He literally ran himself into the ground for the team and is my vote for MOM.

Comment #172I thought that Murphy’s mocking was a little muted to avoid a YC, but i do hate to see that sort of gesture, really not necessary.

Comment #180This is very dissapointing…First time in years that we are in a semi and hopefully a final too and there is no broadcast here in India…Until last year I believe there was…but not this year…the FA cup had a broadcast this year too…
So in short I wont be able to watch the final either…
Eitherways hope we have a good transfer window and win the EFL cup…
Wonder if Gordon is cup tied

Comment #183That Southampton defence were there for the taking in the first half, but the ball kept being played wide. Instead of pointing with his arms spread, Eddie should of pushed Bruno forward to thread the ball through to Wilson. At least then we may not have seen Longstaff sky another shot, as he would have been protecting the back four.
Southampton really came into the game when our energy and intensity dropped early in the second half. Thank goodness for the quality of our subs and I hope the team get plenty of rest in the coming seven days. Plus reinforcements.

Comment #184I know you can justifiably criticise that performance, but it’s easier to laud it.
Critique: Murphy’s wave could’ve been more dynamic, but we did create a wave opportunity didn’t we? Joe missed a sitter, but he never shies away (even back when we hated him), he busted a lung to reach that ball from Isak and score. Willock and Longstaff miss many but they work harder than most MFs in the entire league.
Praise: What a keeper! What a back line! I know it will be breached some time before 2025 but what a run. So, a 9 or a 10 to every single one of them, that can’t be bad.
Bruno is skillful and a fighter, Joel is omnipresent, Miggy MOM, Isak ASM on fire, so many positives.
Special mention: Armstrong.

Comment #185Talking of hand signals, Eddie plainly gave away the short free kick played sideways to Bruno….almost a telegraphed pass.

Negativity does come easier, but I do hope that Howe picks up on the drop on energy and rubbery legs in his post match assessment. I have a feeling that his Bournemouth side used to run out of steam towards the end of the season.

Comment #192That’s the most I have seen Almiron use his right foot in his Toon career
Our attack looked so much better with him getting to the by line to hit it low rather than moving infield on his stronger foot as defenders hate having to chase back down the sides

Comment #193Swapping being constantly aware of the number of points / places away from the relegation line, to the CL qualification line is a real novelty. But reading the transfer rumours and looking at the bottom seven teams, I would expect a couple of those teams to pull away with the right buys. Just as much as nufc need to buy in to cement a top 4 spot, whilst the opportunity presents itself.

Comment #197Very intense game in terms of emotions. However we got goos result. Of course, it will be hard game in 2nd leg, but which game isn’t? I’m sure we smash them at home easier and take more of our chances. So, prepare lads and lasses for final! Yuhu! I bit envy you, but maybe I can make it on April to visit Newcastle. Have a great day everyone! Greetings from Poland 🙂

Twice last night in no time Willock then Almiron got beat for pace when racing for the ball. Very rare these 2 get beat for pace. I hope this isn’t burnout starting with half the season to go #NUFC
———————————————
I am not the only one seeing it and it happened more than this, even Botman lost his legs for no reason. Which may be an over reaction, but shouting wildly and inept passing are more likely to be down to being run down than just plainly a bad player.

Comment #200Miggy had ran half the length of the pitch to defend and then was immediately asked to run the other way…he was just out of puff…no burn out…just didnt have enough in the tank at that moment in time. 5 mins later he was back at it again running his heart out.
Nothing to see here
