Karl Darlow is set to join Hull City for the rest of the season. Mark Douglas with i news has published exclusive comments from Hull’s chairman Tan Kesler confirming the deal.
Here is what Kesler told the outlet:
“Karl Darlow is coming from Newcastle, we have completed his paperwork.
“In terms of when we will announce it’s a tricky one, I want fans to be patient with us. The club – Newcastle – and the player wanted to participate in their cup journey and we have respected that. Hopefully, once it’s done he will be joining us but the paperwork already has the signature on it.
“There’s no problems with the deal.
“We have very good goalkeepers already. Matty is brilliant, he is leading the league in saves if not the top three.
“But we have an unfortunate moment last season where we had both senior goalkeepers injured. We don’t want the same situation.
“We want Karl because he’s experienced promotion and played at the highest level. He’s got different skills and attributes to Matty. I want our fans to know we’ll have two good goalkeepers we’ll feel secure about.
“Karl had other clubs but thanks to him, he believed in [manager] Liam (Rosenoir’s) style of play, the owner’s vision and he has agreed to join us. He has joined us for six months, you never know it could be long-term but in the end we have three young goalkeepers we’re trying to develop, Harvey Cartwright is an England under-20, Thimothee Orcel-Lo Tutala, who is a France under-20 international.
“For the short-term, we needed more experience and more presence.”
Darlow was the backup in last night’s semi-final first leg at Southampton. It appears Eddie Howe wanted to give the long-serving Magpie one last matchday before heading out on loan.
The 32-year-old has been with Newcastle since the 2015/16 season and has made 100 appearances; though only one this season. He did get a spell as Newcastle’s number one the past two seasons when Martin Dubravka was injured.
The position has been clogged since Dubravka was recalled from his loan at Old Trafford. Loris Karius sealed a 6-month extension and will be the backup for the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final with Dubravka cup-tied.

Comment #1Best of luck to him, was back up for years for Dubs and now is maybe 3rd of 4th choice in the squad. Don’t think he’s ever kicked up a stink and was always an alright keeper to call upon when needed.
Good luck to him!

Comment #3I don’t believe for a minute that Howe put Darlow on the bench out of sentiment. That would be massively risky if Pope got injured and we didn’t have our 2nd choice to come on. I’m guessing 1 or both of the other options were not available for one reason or another.

Comment #4Ash – I reckon he’ll expect to be starting before too long. Seems like they have young keepers so his experience will be very important.

Comment #9Thank you Karl and all the best in your career.
I think he’s a good keeper, but we’ve acquired a great one in Pope.
Dub to go now.
Karl Darlow has been an exemplary pro, never complained, created back up.
Goid luck to him!

Comment #11He’s also taking up 20k of our wage budget, we don’t need 20 goalkeepers at the club, 2 is more than enough.
Get rid of dubravka he’s no longer needed, get rid of Gillespie he’s here for no reason at all. and sell Darlow on a permanent.

I totally agree with everything you posted.
He has served his purpose for us wonderfully, good luck to the lad.
He was never the same when he got rid of that flattop/quiff thing he had going on.
Pope is the best keeper we have ever had!

Can’t disagree, mate.
Pope has fit right in.
Seems a top gadj, too.
I’m inclined to keep Karius, dunno why, just a vibe about him.

Comment #17In Pope, Dubravka and Karius we probably have the greatest goalkeeping depth in football, and Karl Darlow is now slouch either, he’s put in some splendid performances for us, and pulled off some truly remarkable saves. Definitely should be playing first team football somewhere.

I can think of one premier league keeper who is not as good as Darlow mate, and it’s Danny Ward at Leicester who is absolutely diabolical, even Gillespie is a better keeper than Ward TDS.

I have a strange feeling about Karius as well mate.
Watching the training vids he looks well up for the challenge.
For me Dubs has burned his bridges and can do one!
Gillespie is a 5th wheel, get rid and promote 1 of the kids to 3rd choice.

Comment #20Gotta agree that both Burn and Maxi starting down the left is a worry, and that beyond this season we need a better option at left back, and Maxi to show he can track back effectively. , If he is to win his starting spot back. Burn is great, but I think his future for us is competing at left sided centre back. No question a fast tricky winger will do him one on one if given space in front and behind, an

Comment #26Yeah Flurz, competing with and as cover. Botman is a wonderful player, but Burn has certainly had a great impact too, and either in the side or off the bench he’s got plenty to offer us for a couple more years atleast beyond this one. Don’t see much future for him as our starting left back though, beyond this campaign, particularly if we qualify for CL.

Comment #29Maybe having Burn at LB was to accommodate Maxi? A more defensively minded LB and a more attack minded LW. Just an idea…

I know Leicester are on the look out for a keeper, and Darlow is most definitely better than Ward which was my point mate. I see Manure are already a goal up on forest although I didn’t see any problem for them it that semi final unfortunately.

Agree again re: Dub…
I think Karius really appreciates the lifeline and is prepared to put the hard yards in.
Again, like you, training vids, looks happy to be given a shot and wants to work.
It’s a proper tough gig, keeping. Gotta wait for ya chance and it’s difficult to impress in a game or so… probably need a few in a row ti instill confidence into the defense.
