Newcastle continue to push for Everton attacker Anthony Gordon as their top winter target. The deal will hinge on Everton lowering their lofty demands according to the latest report from Luke Edwards in The Telegraph.
Gordon is said to be desperate to make the move with personal terms not expected to be a problem. The 21-year-old missed training yesterday with the club stating it was a planned absence.
Chelsea apparently are now out of the running with Gordon preferring St. James’ Park over Stamford Bridge. The Blues willingness to part with £60m for the Liverpool-born attacker last summer is now delaying the process.
Newcastle will not pay that amount and have identified Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech as plan B. The 29-year-old Moroccan would be a solid addition either on loan or as a permanent signing. Though Chelsea may have second thoughts about strengthening a rival for a top-four place.
Despite the distance in the valuation, Newcastle maintain confidence an agreement will be reached. It could take until the final few days of the window before any movement happens with Gordon.

Comment #6He’s simply not worth a big fee.
They need the money. He doesn’t want to be there.
If we must buy him (TBF I don’t get the press BS)
This gives us a very strong bargaining position to give them a take it or leave it offer – as he is not a ready made match winner.
He improves our bench. Nothing more.
For the money Everton want, Maddison is a far better value even at 60.

Comment #8Does not really feel like a transfer window at all…let alone the last few days of one…
Very few rumours…murmurs rather…
Just one loud one in Gordon…who is more of a squad option than a sure shot starter…no doubt we need a few of these as well with Europe or CL…
I would like to see us go for Diaby in the last few days…Summer will likely see us losing out on him due to competition…Now is the time to sneak in and swoop him…

I don’t think Maddison is available and Tielemans, imo isn’t budging until he’s on a free.

Comment #10I haven’t shouted at the screen so much in over 16 months, such were our glaring misses and mislaid passes last night! Almiron was again a delight with his running and crosses. Like many I think it is high time we rested Wilson and Willock and gave ASM and Isak a start. Freshening things up will help and create more competition!
I may be in a minority here, but I found Murphy’s wave disrespectful and unprofessional. We’re better than that. Trippier continues to impress in the way he doesn’t allow the players to mob the referee.

Basically, it’s about attendances and televising 3:00pm ko’s if you’re interested, it’s only back one page. 🙂

Comment #13cleveleysbob – I read it. 🙂 the official response was that it’s not just about the Premier League clubs but the lower league ones too. Many people who attend matches at lower league or non-league clubs also support a Premier League team. If they’ve got the choice of watching their Premier League team on TV or their local team in person, some will pick the former.

Comment #15TDS, I thought that was the principle, but it’s never been tested.
I would argue that most fans are genuine in their support of “live” football, and will continue to support their team irrespective of tv.
The best example is probably here in the North East where we have a huge number of non league teams 1 x PL team and 2x Championship teams. I don’t think that supporters of South Shields or Gateshead would give up their Saturday afternoon fix, just to watch Sunderland or Newcastle on the telly. (a) they could record the game to watch later. (b) there’s always MOtD or highlights packages available.
I think the concept is out of date and irrelevant in Today’s world, and a misnomer that they’re using to maintain the status quo.

I don’t mind the idea of Gordon if the team are on board with it, but the way he’s dividing opinion I think Ziyech might be a better shout.

Comment #17Not sure why we would want to get a player that has never been a regular for Chelsea in all his time there. Why would he be good enough for NUFC? Gone are the days when we take players that have failed at so-called bigger clubs. Look what happened to Everton.
Don’t think his work rate would be good enough for the way we play.

Did you see the article I referenced a week or two ago on that point about 3pm games?
It was introduced in the 1960s by the then Burnley chairman as he was concerned it would impact match going attendances. There was zero evidence provided beyond this one guys hunch but he was successful in lobbying everyone to get on board.
We are the only country to have this type of ban and looking at the data from across other European countries, there is no evidence to suggest that when a game is televised, local attendances drop. So realistically, given the advent of streaming, there is no real reason to keep this in place.

It’s not a risk to start him ahead of Wilson.
I want ASM to start also but I can see the risk in that it might have an impact on our defensive solidity.

Comment #21The fact Gordon is splitting opinion is even more reason to sign him. Think he’s fairly active on social media and stuff, so no doubt he’ll see some fans aren’t keen. Means he’ll hopefully be even more up for games and be determined to prove them wrong and win them over.
Howe can set it as a challenge to him in the right way too. Go out there and show everyone why we brought you in, prove the doubters wrong and get them on side.

One man struggles while another relaxes. What’s not worked for him at Chelsea might work very well for him here. Look at they way he excelled in a Mortocco side not full of prima Donna’s.

I don’t think it will make any difference what fans opinion is on signing Gordon.
My view on Gordon; he is a young player who has made his debut and played in a struggling relegation threatened team with a huge turnover of players and two managers in a season. That’s a tall order for an experienced player, never mind one making his Prem debut at 19/20. For the Everton fans to now be giving him, a baby in the game, stick is ridiculous.
Early doors he was one of the few performers in a very poor Everton team but he always impressed me even before we were interested in him. He’s got bundles of skill and pace, isn’t afraid to get stuck in or take a heavy tackle and he defo has attitude. I reckon Eddie and his team have seen the same things.
If we get him for £25M + £15M add ons, I reckon that will prove to be excellent business. I would image the lad is pushing hard to get away and there could be legs in this deal now or in the summer.

Comment #25I see Chelsea are still playing the game of outbidding us on every player that is publicly linked with us.
I can’t see the point, if we’re valuing a player at say £35 -40M, why would they offer £60M?
It’s bloody stupid and more proof if it was needed that US owners know nowt about European Football or its regulations.
Everton have an issue now, they’ve supposedly got a £60M offer on the table, but the player wants to come here. They’re fooked. They pretty well have to accept our offer or be stuck with a player that really doesn’t want to be there. They can wave Chelsea’s offer in our face all day long, it’s worthless if the player won’t move. It actually shows he has some common sense, he’s knows he’ll never get on the pitch at Chelsea whereas he’s a chance of regular starts with us. 🙂

Comment #26We need 1st team talent.
Chelsea will need to loan out quite a few players on or before deadline day.
A better option. But only if they are willing to deal with us. (Full Internationals too)
Simply we need 1st team game changers.
Gordon is not that. In time he might be. But for a January window it’s a very odd link.
Loans are better suited to all parties in January. (finances, players wishes etc)

Comment #27In order for things to be changed and televise 3pm kick-offs, there would need to be buy-in from the league and possibly also non-league clubs. So they’ll need to know that it’s in their interests. Unlike PL club, their match day revenue is a much higher % of overall revenue so even a 5% drop in attendances would be a disaster for many clubs.
I’m 100% certain that this is something the Premier League and Premier League clubs want but it’s up to them to create the business case and make it happen.
I’ve said it before that I think we’re unique in having 4 professional leagues. We have far more professional clubs than in other countries. We are genuinely unique so you can’t really compare us to other leagues. In many other countries, there’s a small number of professional clubs below the top division and some are even feeder clubs or B teams for the top clubs.
It may well have been a hunch in the 60’s but the PL would need to demonstrate that making this change won’t negatively affect other clubs.

Comment #28Aye Bill’s I was kind of talking from a fans point of view, there’s no way they’ve spent time and strategy on the player only to be put off by a view dissenting voices on twitter and blogs, if the deal happens he’s coming, then it’s up to him to prove his doubters wrong.

Not that he’s any authority on the subject but I was talking to a young Chelsea fan last week about their FFP. He seems to think they’ll offload a bunch of players to offset funds. Who’ve they really got that’s surplus that will bring in any decent kind of money, especially knowing they want rid and have lost any kind of bargaining chip.

Comment #32TOF – according to Transfermarkt, Chelsea currently have 6 players out on loan. They are allowed to loan out a total of 8. They do have quite a few players listed on Transfermarkt who are young enough not to be registered in the 25 man squad though.

Ziyech has had plenty of opportunities at Chelsea, and never cut it. He does not have the ability to press as required by EH.
Cannot compare international football to club football, especially the guys from most of the African teams. He’s high level for Morocco, but not necessarily for EPL.
Can’t think of one Chelsea bench warmer that would work for us – Loftus-Cheek not good enough, Pulisic never fit, Jorginho past his best and no legs.
Would take Gallagher, cos his work rate would be perfect for NUFC, but he’s getting more game time for Chelsea, so not sure he’s available.

Comment #34There’s some decent players out of contract this summer.
Tielemans I think will run his contract down, I do think we’ll be one of the clubs going for him. Some fans have said he won’t suit our style of play. I think he’d actually add to it and give us a different type of midfielder, plus he’s still at an age whew he can improve and adapt.
Zaha is another, not sure if we’d be interested but I’d like to see him have another go at a club challenging for European football and trophies.
On Gordon, I’m warming to idea because he’s young and has a lot of potential. He’s clearly got an arrogance about him and he can act like a prick but he’ll mature and develop under Howe. I used to hate Maddison when he was younger, he was a bit of a poser on the pitch, again a bit arrogant. He’s still got a bit of that but he’s matured.
I think both would be good additions and buy into the way the club works, the work ethic, team spirit etc.

Comment #35The day after the night before. Was getting worried that it was going to be one of those nights but we got there in the end and now have a great chance to get to the final, our first in this competition since 1976.
Not a given though as nerves could be a big factor in the next game. Not only is it a huge thing for us as fans but it’s also big chance for most (all?) of these players to get to their first final.

Comment #36The one thing now is will Chelsea deal with us?
We are a serious issue to their champions league chances, so I’m not sure they would loan us players that make us stronger!
Maybe a permanent deal if we pay over the odds but not helping us with loans! Imo
