Anthony Gordon has arrived on Tyneside this morning to undergo his medical and finalize his move to Newcastle. The medical is the next step afer the two clubs reached a compromise on Friday which will see Newcastle splash out £40m in one lump sum for the 21-year-old.
A sell-on clause was also included in the agreement while Gordon was asked to submit a transfer request. The England U21 international had missed training from Tuesday to Thursday with only the first day being confirmed as a planned absence.
Gordon has spent his entire career at Goodison Park. He broke into their first team last season after spending the second half of the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Preston North End. He’ll end his Toffee days with 78 appearances in which he contributed 7 goals and 8 assists.
The winger can play on either flank and started the season as an emergency center-forward when Dominic Calvert-Lewin was out injured. Gordon has immense talent that Eddie Howe can harness. One area of improvement is his tendency to pick up bookings. He’s had 13 yellow cards over the past two seasons.
Gordon is just the second signing of the window behind Garang Kuol, who is on loan with Hearts. Newcastle are unlikely to make any more marquee moves with the window slamming shut on Tuesday.
The pursuit of Flamengo’s Matheus Franca will likely have to wait until the summer while West Ham have so far been unmoved by offers for Harrison Ashby. The 21-year-old’s contract runs out in the summer with him having no intention of extending his stay.

Comment #4Raj – well, Targett is competing for a place in the starting 11 and was the man in possession for the 2nd half of last season so I’d say it’s accurate to say he hasn’t nailed down that position. Howe is preferring Burn (typically a centre back) over Targett (a natural left back).
This isn’t being overly critical of Targett but making fair comment that it’s a bit disappointing that a player signed to be our first choice left back has been supplanted by a centre back. Ideally we’d have Targett firing on all cylinders and Burn as an option at centre back.

Comment #5Thinking about our squad in a 2-3 years horizon.
Pope(30)/Karius(29)
Trippier(32)/Manquillo(28), Schar(31)/Lascelles(29), Botman(23), Burn(30)/Targett(27)
Longstaff(25)/Anderson(20), Bruno(25)/Shelvey(30), Joelinton(26)/Willock(23)
Almiron(28)/Murphy(27), Isak(23)/Wilson(30), Gordon(21)/ASM(25)
Forward –
With Gordon joining, it’s our relatively more complete area for upcoming 3 years. This summer I’d like invest in one more wonderkid like Kuol, who could be ready for first team squad in 2-3 years time to succeed Almiron. Good if we have resources to replace Murphy but I feel he’s a decent back-up, if you consider he had converted his off the post into goals.
Yes Wilson is turning 31 and injury-prone. But getting a younger striker above or similar to his quality would be another 60mio+ signing. He serves as good impact sub and back up to Isak in the coming 1 to 2 years, unless his injury record impairs his standard. The Brazilian wonderkid, Franca, could be the versatile investment to prepare our future attacking line.
Midfield –
We are in short of one first team midfielder, who can score. Maddison is definitely one of the answers if we can get him in the coming few days or summer. Feel like we are patiently waiting for the best moment like signing Botman and Gordon.
I wish Anderson can really make it in 1-2 years. Sadly for Matt Longstaff, due to injuries, he doesn’t have the development opportunity like Sean under Howe.
I trust in Shelvey to fill up the role of Bruno when he needs rest. It buys us some time before getting another quality deep-lying playmaker.
Back four –
The best team in the best league in the world. In the summer, we need a youngster to learn from Trippier, an upgrade to Lascelles and a left back who can challenge the first team immediately.
Going forward I see Burn should be a central defender together with Botman, Schar and a new young CB.
Targett is one of our first team members but good to add a young natural left back to compete with him.
Goalie –
our England No. 1 will have his prime few years ahead. We need to make sure a motivated back-up to him. From the age perspective, I would like to invest in Karius over Dubravka.

Speaking after Newcastle’s 0-0 stalemate at Arsenal on Tuesday evening, head coach Howe revealed that Targett could be out for a “number of weeks” with a “nasty heel injury.”
that was in October and since then the heel has shown very slow improvement and he’s only just returned to full training,

Comment #13I recall it took a wee while to sign Targett permanently. I’m pretty sure Eddie wanted someone else whom he saw as a 1st team starter and for the project long term. It seems to have become evident that Eddie doesn’t rate Targett that highly. Very capable squad player and always reliable. Suppose we’ll see down the line whether Targett himself is happy with where he fits in and not getting regular footie.
If Gordon becomes a regular starter Longstaff or Willock is going to have to make way because Big Joe will drop back alongside Bruno you’d think. The old adage ‘nice headache’ for wor Eddie springs to mind!

Comment #18I think Longstaff is getting far too much stick. Yeah his shooting has been so poor this season, but he covers every blade of grass and sets up some goals, passing has been brilliant, just needs to work on finishing. Look at the praise Shearer gave him couple of weeks back on match of the day. We would not be 3rd this season without him. Yes if we get Maddison, could see him being dropped but he always needs to be in the squad and I think will still play a part in all games

Comment #19Most on here forgetting Matt Targett has a long term heel injury.
I’m not sure but he may not have even been registered in the squad in the first half of the season due to it.
Prior to that he was starting at left back over BDB at least some of the time.

I agree, it’s Willock who makes way if Gordon cements a 1st 11 berth. Can’t knock his effort and runs down the line getting into good positions to cross.
Longstaff offers more all round and will only get better alongside Bruno and Big Joe.

Willock and Longstaff outperform him in a team in the CL places who’ve lost one league match all season. What would Willock and Longstaff look like in Everton’s team? Both looked very poor in Bruce’s struggling squad, now look at them.
You have no idea what he’ll be like in the same environment our centre mids have played in until he plays.

Aye, Targett had been carrying a heel injury since October and it became too painful to play on so wor Eddie was saying a while back. Probably more balanced with him at LB as opposed to BDB, although BDB has been getting forward of late.
I just think he wasn’t Eddie’s 1st choice when we signed him permanently. I think BDB was supposed to be the back up at both LB and LCB. I reckon someone got away and we signed Targett. Can’t suss out who it might have been though as we were linked with everyone s usual pal 😆

Literally the only thing you can criticise Longstaff for is his finishing at the minute. He was no more guilty of misplaced passes in our last game than the other 21 players on the pitch, it was rife. Bruno misplaced a ton of passes and got MOM FFS.
It’s the same with Willock unfortunately, everything else about his game is spot on he just forgot how to finish.
At least Joelinton keeps one in 4 shots on target.

Comment #36Calbee – really like the squad assessment
I think we are not as bad (even only signing Gordon) for the rest of the season with no European or FA cup games as people think
Max, Isak, Shelvey coming back and Joelinton back in midfield changes our squad. Shame Krafth is out or I don’t think we would need a RB that much either.
17 decent players:
Pope, Dubravka/Karius
Targett
Burn, Botman, Schar
Trippier
Bruno, Shelvey
J7, Willock, Longstaff
Almiron
Maxi, Gordon
Wilson, Isak
With Murphy, Lascelles, Manquillo, Anderson doing a job for this season is ok with basically one game a week.

Wor Eddie wouldn’t drop Big Joe though would he? I don’t think wor Eddie would risk taking his work rate and team play away. I suppose there will be injuries and it could all work itself out.
It’s great to discuss who’s going to be stood down with Gordon’s and maybe someone else’s arrival hopefully, as it points directly to the evidence we see the squad being strengthened.
Happy days!
