Newcastle Tracking Sensational Hungarian As Playmaker Option

Newcastle are one of a number of clubs tracking RB Leipzig playmaker Dominik Szoboszlai according to journalist Ben Jacobs. In an exclusive in Caught Offside, Jacobs names Newcastle along with Chelsea and Atletico Madrid as potential suitors.

His report primarily names Chelsea as having the most interest. Though he states Newcastle have the 22-year-old on their extensive list of midfield options this summer. Newcastle are expected to add a playmaker in the summer with James Maddison likely a top target.

Szoboszlai would be an amazing addition despite not having the almost guaranteed return of Maddison with his extensive Premier League experience. Though Szoboszlai has a wealth of experience in Germany and Austria with over 200 senior appearances.

The versatile Hungarian can play through the middle or out wide. He would rival Kieran Trippier with his set-piece prowess as he’s also scored some wonder goals throughout his short career for both club and country.

This one does seem like a longshot as Leipzig will not want to part with their young playmaker, who joined from RB Salzburg in January 2021. Szoboszlai is tied down until 2026 and reportedly has a sizeable release clause.

One thing Jacobs mentions is Szoboszlai remains close to Erling Halaand from his Salzburg days and talks frequently about England. The player presumably is keen on testing himself in the Premier League at some point in the future.

A lot of newly promoted teams tend to suffer first season syndrome..
Not that we’ve just been promoted but teams seem to have sussed us out within six months this season..
I still think we’ll finish strong though .. a little tweak here and there and the results will come..

Have teams sussed us out though?

We still seem to be playing well and creating chances; obviously the big problem is converting those chances.

It does look as though we have stalled in front of goal though, so either Callum Wilson has to come up with the goals “soon” or Isak will no doubt get to start.

    On nufc.com this morning.

A reminder of a very famous game 49 years ago today. Aside from the shenanigans that went on a great representation of what football at SJP was like in the 1970s. This game had it all. I’m glad VAR wasn’t around for the 4th goal especially.

I think our recent dip in results is just due to the current quality we have. The team we have at the moment is a good team who have so far outperformed what you’d probably expect of them as players. With a few exceptions such as Bruno and Trippier etc. So realistically at some stage, teams would catch on that we’re actually pretty good and set up to frustrate us with low blocks etc. That’s when we then need to be a quality team to break those defences down and still pick up results.

I don’t think much needs to change in terms of how we’re playing or our approach, the groundwork is all there and we’re playing well in games and creating. We just need to add and upgrade more quality to that groundwork to go to the next level up.

Teams often have good periods of form and not so good periods of form. Liverpool an Man Utd appear to have started with bad form and are now starting to find it again, we appear to have started well but are now struggling a bit. That’s just league football though. Take the season as a whole and it will still be a good season but I hope the lads find a second wind to make it an interesting ending. Will be a bit of a damp squib if we limp to 8th place after all.

I think we are still breaking those defences down in the games I have watched but without finishing moves off by scoring.

I’m really looking forward to the game at the weekend to see what Eddie Howe comes up with; will he continue to play Wilson or bring in Isak from the start.

    Who’d be a manager?

To some extent we still are, but I think it was Transfer Sage the other day who put stats up to show since the World Cup we’re creating chances, but not as many as before. So a quality player added to the squad to create more and clearer chances would make a huge difference. That’s half what I mean by the ‘groundwork’ being in place though. Howe has got us playing to a set style and it’s working in terms of good possession, good energy, good defensive work and creating chances. We just need that extra quality added to it to consistently get results over a whole season 🙂

Fingers crossed we see Isak against Wolves!

It will be interesting to see the reaction from Wilson if he comes on after Isak has started in his place.

Who knows, it may be the nudge he needs to find his scoring form.

I would have faith in Eddie Howe to come up with the best solution for both players and the team.

I predicted at the start of the season that we’d never maintain that CL form as teams would have sussed us out a bit more, apart from those run of draws that went out of the window. Not sure why it’s happened now though at this stage of the season.

Raj – peculiarly I was accused of being anti-Toon for 100% wanting a trophy over top 4. Apparently this bright spark concluded that top 4 would be better for the club because of the extra money that it would bring in and therefore accelerate our project so I should prefer that option rather than actually win something. Odd to say the least.

100% trophy all the way. I genuinely find it strange for a Toon fan to say otherwise.

Was reading an article on us from the athletic and there was a comment from a Bournemouth fan that I found quite interesting

That they said often when he has a long winning streak it’s followed by long streaks without winning and often he would just stick with Plan A until it started working again which would frustrate Bournemouth fans

But he thinks the plan B for us will eventually be Gordon, Targett and Isak which I agree with!! Would like to see that plan enacted at the weekend don’t want to see Burn at fullback again

Although I said it was a shame we had lumped 30M on Lewis and Targett, when we still don’t really seem to have nailed a permanent specialist LB, I certainly think Targett has been decent and reliable, just maybe missing a little X factor.

    Jail

Yes sorry I have been a bit grumpy of late. Tbh I thought we’d lose all 3 of the games we just played. We had been previously spoiled and I’d hate to see all that melt away now.

On a lighter note, hope for Dujuan Richards yet. Apparently did OK in his 2 week trail and is waiting for a call. Hope it comes and is positive.

I think we invented the pitch invasion, or was it Rangers at our place in 69. A mix of young kids and rotund bald trolls!
Interesting that away fans had the Gallowgate end. When did the Gallowgate become the home end. When the Leazes was knocked down in the 70’s? So why all the myth about scoring in the Gallowgate end. And I heard our fans singing you’ll never walk alone at the end. Very few terrace songs 50 years ago.
    And Moncur playing CF!

Rotunda that was what the Bournemouth guys on the vid said, that had Jail in a flap with me. At the time, it was weakish defence and no plan B. They loved eddie and seemed like normal guys, but some didnt want to hear negatives.

He has developed and sorted out the defence and i think he will alter the attack enough to make it more dangerous.

That said , with no change from inverted wingers and a slight unwillingness to put numbers in the box, he hasnt shown a major propensity to try alterations. Maybe v Wolves?

It’s a tricky one. One one hand it could be seen as a risk to try and start tampering with our way of playing, shape or inverted wingers etc. As it could lead to worsening our play and currently it’s only really the finishing letting us down. Usually you just need 1 to go in and the floodgates reopen again. So might be that Howe and his team are seeing enough positives in our current set up to trust that it’s just bad luck finishing wise at the moment and that tide will soon turn.

On the other hand, changing things up may find us creating clearer chances and getting among the goals again. Could discover a new shape, system or players in certain position which get’s our form back on track quicker than waiting for the current set up to turn the corner again.

There’s elements of risk and pro’s and cons to both scenarios. So it’s a tricky one to navigate. Can imagine how shite it would be if we changed things and slipped further and further down the table, rather than sticking to what got us there in the first place and trusting it to work itself out again.

onmeedsun: Yep the first 2 pitch invasions in football both at SJP.

As regards the Gallowgate, it was always a strange one. Fans were only maybe formally segregated for cup games when it was guaranteed a large number of away fans would be turning up having bought tickets in advance. Most games including cups were predominantly pay on the door.

Back in the 70s I recall standing on the terraces along side away supporters in West stand, East Stand and the Gallowgate. One league game against Boro was particularly interesting in the Gallowgate, though on my behalf only resulted in some “advanced pushing and shoving”, primarily trying to find a step to get onto.

At the height of football hooligan thing we had such a bad rep and it became a rare sight to a sizeable number of away fans at SJP, hence all the Leazes end nonsense of West End – East lads knocking 10 bells out of each other because there wasn’t much action to be had with away supporters.

I’m glad those days are long since gone, though we have lost something with respect to occasion and atmosphere along the way.
