What appears to be a throw-away line has captured some attention in Newcastle’s pursuit of a new left-back. 90min recently reported on Newcastle’s heightening interest in Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney.
The report also offhandedly suggested that Renan Lodi still graces the club’s shortlist. The Brazilian was a target early last summer before Matt Targett’s purchase option was triggered making his loan move permanent.
Lodi ended up with Nottingham Forest on loan with a £25m purchase option. He has been Steve Cooper’s primary left-back since his arrival with 21 appearances helping keep Forest out of the bottom three.
If they keep above the drop zone by this season’s conclusion, the club will likely trigger the purchase option. It would be then up to Lodi to decide on a long-term future at the City Ground.
It makes sense the 24-year-old is still being monitored along with Tierney and Inter Milan’s Federico Dimarco. Lodi now has shown he can handle the Premier League which will make Newcastle more comfortable in shelling out the cash for him should he become available.

I’m sure there would have been some provision in there that he could be sacked for free should we be in the bottom three after X amount of games.

Comment #45I would be delighted if we sign Lodi.
I wanted him over Targett from day one.
The only reason we didn’t sign him was that financially it wasn’t a good deal.
That’s why City didn’t push for him either.
I’d take Johnson as well from Forest brilliant player.

Even with a rolling three year deal that lasted forever, maybe not totally free but not the full three years our owners were lumbered with.
