Howe Provides Squad Update Ahead Of Crucial Wolves Clash

Eddie Howe has taken his press briefing this morning ahead of Sunday’s clash against Wolves. The head coach revealed that he hopes Fabian Schar will be back for the match after being in concussion protocol.

He also hinted there could be others fighting for fitness as he stated the following:

“We hope Fabian Schär will be in the squad. He’s trained well this week so I’m pleased to see him back.

“We have a couple of knocks from the Man City game but we hope it’s nothing too serious.”

There have been minimal injuries in recent weeks. So Howe has had some selection decisions to make. That will be no different for Sunday as Joelinton will serve the first of his two-match ban.

Jamaal Lascelles had a promising outing at the Etihad in Schar’s place. Howe was asked about the captain and his performance. Howe provided the following assessment on Jamaal:

“He’s led by example on the training ground. I had no doubt he’d come in and do well [at Man City] because of what I’ve seen.

“He performed to a high level & I’m pleased for him because he deserved that moment. I think he’s in a really good place.”

Lascelles recently spoke out on his lack of opportunities. His statements were team-oriented as he has completely encompassed his leadership role in the squad. If there are any doubts about Fabian, Howe will have no hesitation in handing Lascelles another start.

Interestingly, Howe spoke about another long-term Magpie who is pushing for a start. That is super-sub Jacob Murphy. The 28-year-old plays almost every match though rarely from the opening whistle.

Howe must be pleased with the winger’s contributions as well as in training as he said the following:

“I think he’s done very well off the bench this year but that’s not to say that’s his sole role. He’s done well when he’s come on in the last few games and that’s not lost on me.

“He’s pushing to start and there’s no doubting his qualities.”

Howe could go with another slightly-rotated squad on Sunday. Competition for places could be the key to getting the Magpies heading back in the right direction down the stretch.

    cyprus,
I said last year when the ITK’s were claiming ‘that they’d heard’ that Trips would be captain 😉 that it is huge to take a captaincy off a player, there aren’t many instances where it happens, even Maguire is still captain at Man U.

I can’t see us playing Targett. People are thinking his inclusion would result in a back 4 like
    Trippier Lascelles Botman Targett

But it would look more like
    Lascelles Botman
    Targett
    Trippier

He’s need to bring in a third centre back and/ or make Trippier play a much more defensive role

I think the time you said he was no better than Pardew confirmed that Munster.

In Wilson’s defence, his record probably isn’t as bad as it seems as he hasn’t been playing full 90 minutes. Just looking at his post WC record now.
    Leeds 26 minutes
Then he’s partial games against Man C, Arsenal, Liverpool and the cup final against Man Utd. All tough opponents.
His 2 full games were West Ham were he scored and Fulham were he played brilliantly but was unlucky not to score.
Then there was a partial game vs Palace.

Going against him, he’s not been involved in most games, and has missed some sitters.

I think if he starts against Wolves, it has to be his last chance. Personally, I’d go with Isak, but won’t be overly worried if Wilson starts. Strikers have these spells.

    ZG,
What do you mean by partial, when he’s been subbed off because he’s not been good enough or not fit enough, something isn’t right with him.

Almiron has just signed a new contract with us, hasn’t he? For him to be dropped for someone like Murphy, who simply isn’t at Premier League level in my opinion, would be very surprising unless he’s injured or needs a rest.

Some people are calling for the entire front 3 to be changed and that seems a bit excessive to me. I think Gordon and Isak are the future for us so I’d love to see them get runs in the team but I can’t help but think Almiron will start and we’ll see how he works with those two. I think their superior movement and decisions will open up more space for Almiron and he could be more effective.

The problem with what Eddie’s saying there is, he’s more or less feeding all the people who say he hasn’t a plan B .

He’s effectively saying “don’t change things, just because we’re not getting the results”.

Well excuse me, but isn’t that exactly when you should change things?

Unless this is a red herring to avoid letting opponent know what you’re doing, I’ll be very unhappy if he changes nothing from previous games.

Isn’t doing exactly the same thing but expecting a different outcome a sign of insanity? 😆

Bob – it depends on the reasons that Eddie believes we’re not getting the results and what the alternative is. We seem to be playing well and controlling games without offering enough of a goal threat. There’s a question of whether that requires a change of personnel or a tweak to the tactics.

There might be a minor change or a one player change that could make a big improvement to the dynamic and make us much more threatening. My opinion is that change is Isak but maybe it’s Gordon, maybe it’s a tactical change, maybe it’s Bruno/Willock supporting the attack more.

He’s gotta change something so we start scoring some goals again though.

I would guess on the training ground there’s a lot of things being explored/looked at and tactical tweaks. No change to starting 11 doesn’t mean changes aren’t happening, just in other areas other than personnel.

I would be very surprised if we don’t see one or two personnel changes on Sunday though, with him speaking highly of Murphy I would be surprised if he isn’t given a start.

Howe DOES see Isak as a “number 9”. He has said so just a couple of days ago.

He does need bulking up a bit – hopefully his pace will not be affected.

    Good afternoon folks

I can see a lot of people are clamoring for the inclusion of Jacob Murphy in the starting lineup on Sunday, i personally don`t think it will happen as Eddie seems to stay loyal to his tried and trusted team selection and keep the changes to the very minimum, unless forced into changes due to injuries or suspensions!!! So from that perspective i think Schar will replace Lascelles, and little Joe comes in for big Joe HWTL.

Don’t really care what title we give Isak’s position, but his physicality reminds me of Kanu.

If he turns out like him, I’ll be happy.

I never understand people’s objection to him being a centre forward. It’s often based on what a centre forward was 15 years ago as opposed to now.

He plays that position the majority of the time and there are plenty of smaller plays who play that central forward role. There are lots of types of centre forward and he is just one of them.

Just watched some of those goals by Kanu, he was a phenomenal player in his time at Arsenal, i always thought he was very underrated and if Isak turns out to be even half as good we will have a player for sure.

TS, currently i dont see him as a striker but as a roving forward who can alternate positions. Im not sure eddie likes interchangeability, which may beva coaching weakness.i think eddie wants a more powerful guy in there than Isak.

As i have pointed out before, to strange objection by a nitpicker, is that those who knew him at Bournemouth said he had no plan B.

Lets see if he has addressed this , as they were correct also about his weak defence, as i was to reiterate it, at the time.

It’s an easy thing to say that EH couldn’t organise a defence when you look at just his EPL record. But he kept a small club with a 12000 seater capacity ground in the PL by playing football. If you compare them with Dyche’s Burnley, Burnley were more defensive (but also let goals in) but didn’t score nearly as many goals. Always a struggle for small clubs to do both.

If you look at EH’s record as he came up through the leagues,  then it shows that he could actually organise a defence  IMO

Also, I saw an interview with him with him once and he was really put out by that suggestion.
