This is the team Eddie Howe has named for this afternoon’s match against Wolves. It has five changes from last weekend’s defeat at Manchester City with an altered front three.
Howe has made some drastic changes with Alexander Isak in for Wilson and Saint-Maximin returning to the starting eleven. The Frenchman is in for Anthony Gordon who unfortunately isn’t in the squad.
It appears Howe’s praise of Jacob Murphy wasn’t lip service as he comes in for Miguel Almiron on the right. It’s Murphy’s first league start since the win at Southampton in early April.
Here is who Julen Lopetegui has selected for Wolves.
Newcastle have a chance to climb to 5th in the table while adding to the cushion to Fulham and Brighton in the battle for a top-six finish. Howe has made the changes at the top of the pitch to hopefully spark the attack back to life.

Comment #165Happy to see ASM is getting aggressive. Keep shooting – deflections, corners, and goals will result.

Comment #169We look so much better balanced with Murphy and ASM today
Murphy makes some good runs which opens up the space for Trippier who is still doing the same thing
ASM playing the best he has done in a long time actually passing it early
Isak playing great his runs have been the difference

Comment #172I think the side may look more balanced, due to Isak naturally drifting out left at times, more than Murphy being responsibe.
Difficult to tell. If Almiron comes on, it will give a better idea.a

Comment #173Wolves probably prepared for Miggy and Wilson. The advantage of rotation….
Can’t wait to see the pace of Gordon working one-twos with Isak.

Comment #174probably the best ive seen Murphy play. remember when people derisively said that we signed the wrong twin? wolves couldnt contain him
that said…Isak was the player of the first half.

They can score as without Joe they run onto back 4 too easily.
We shud be 3 up.

Comment #177Wolves playing quite a high back line in possession. They’ll get punished eventually for that.

Comment #178Isak playing like the kind of centre forward love Wilson but he just can’t do that link up or hold up play
Maybe we will go back in for Joa Pedro from Watford again for young back up

Comment #182US coverage insistent that Pope should have been red-carded and Wolves given a penalty. Meanwhile it was blindingly obvious that Jimenez stuck out his trailing leg to create the contact. Amazing.

Comment #183Delighted eddie changed it up. Isak and Maxi linking so well and delighted eddie dropped miggy and stopped this left foot right wing nonsense.

Comment #184Not sure about this love in for Murphy. Not sure he has done that much. Nice that he crosses but it didnt lead to a goal or chances. Isak has been the man, running in behind is causing all sorts of issues for them.
I am not a huge a miggy fan because he is predictable. You always know what he is going to do, cant fault the effort, but still.

Comment #185Why would Pope have gotten a 4 game ban?
Chirst I can’t bewe got that lucky, it should have been a pen and red card.
I’m not complaining about var for the next month

Comment #189Very good half. Pope lucky to still be on the pitch but Isak has been immense and his link up with Maxi had been brilliant. One more goal to come the nerves in the second half and we’re back in serious contention for a top four spot this season.

Comment #190Got to agree Pope was lucky there, could have been a penalty. Although could argue Pope was running back, hence the come together.

Comment #193Interesting people think it was an obvious pen. I dont, at all. Contact was minimal and the guy threw himself to the floor looking for it.
Could easily have been given and red though. I think that would have been harsh. The guy was not going to score cos he whacked it out.
I agree with everybody who says he was lucky though. Pope had no idea what he was doing again. Needs to keep it simple for the next 10 games or people will get nervous

Comment #196Irish, you’re crazy. Jimenez actually STOPPED his trail leg in Pope’s path to create the contact. Pope just turned to chase.
IrishRob
Mar 12, 2023 at 5:34 PM
Comment #197Contact wasn’t minimal he literally shoulder charged him.
He got away with it because var could say the ball ran on too far to be a clear goal scoring chance.
But they didn’t give it because the punishment was weighing on the officials mind I guarantee it.
