Newcastle End Losing Skid With 2-1 Win Over Wolves

Newcastle got back into the winning column with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Wolves at St. James’ Park. It was a difficult feat but the losing skid comes to an end with a critical win.

Newcastle played in the 4-3-3 with Pope in goal behind Trippier, Schar, Botman, and Burn. The midfielders were Guimaraes, Longstaff, and Willock. Isak played up front alongside Murphy and Saint-Maximin.

The match started brightly with both teams getting up the pitch. Newcastle had the bulk of possession but neither side was able to get any shot away in the opening stages of the game.

In the 20th minute, Newcastle escaped a disaster. Botman rolled the ball back to Pope on the edge of the box but a loose touch was pounced on by Raul Jiminez. The two players brushed shoulders with Jiminez dropping to the turf. A VAR check ruled confirmed it was not a penalty.

Newcastle took the lead in the 26th minute. A sweeping free-kick from Trippier was met by Isak in the middle of the box. The Swede headed the ball toward the far corner just past the outstretched palm of Jose Sa to make it 1-0.

The bar prevented a 2-0 lead in the 35th minute with Newcastle piling the pressure on Wolves. Trippier’s corner was pulled back by Burn at the far post. Guimaraes nodded the ball off the bar as Wolves escaped.

Howe didn’t make any changes as Newcastle came out for the second half with a slim 1-0 advantage. Wolves, who swapped out Adama Traore for Pedro Neto, started the half on the front foot but were limited to two shots from distance.

The match became a high-octane affair with both clubs having promising forays into the opposition’s end. Wolves saw much more of the ball while failing to create clear-cut chances other than a flashed shot from Moutinho that Pope did well to parry away in the 63rd minute.

Howe went to the bench in the 68th minute with Isak and Saint-Maximin being withdrawn for Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron. Murphy jumped over the left flank with Miggy taking up duties on the right.

It was a Wolves substitute to make the instant impact. Hwang Hee-Chan, who had just come on, rolled the ball into the goal to make it 1-1 in the 70th minute. Pope came out as Trippier slipped trying to clear the ball leaving an open net for the Wolves attacker.

The Magpies retook the lead in the 79th minute through Almiron. On a break, Longstaff found the Paraguayan down the right. He played a one-two with Willock before his deflected shot from a tight angle found the top corner.

Matt Ritchie made his entrance in the 85th minute for Murphy. Newcastle created a great move from a corner in stoppage time with the ball ending up at Botman’s feet. The Dutchman put his shot just wide of the near post.

Newcastle were able to see out the match and secure the points. They move to fifth in the table with matches in hand on the clubs around them. There are still plenty of kinks to iron out but the lads got the job done this evening.

It’s very tight up there, huh?

..and less talk, more action…on motd/highlights.
Also, why do they waste time on coaches in dugouts, crowd etc if they’re cutting football?
    Crazy!

Watching the replays it didn’t look like a pen to me, there wasn’t actually a lot of contact.

Hard fought game but we deserved the win and could have been out of sight in the 1st half.

Maxi had them shiting themselves in the 1st half and I was a little surprised that EH pulled him.

2nd half was tougher but we were still the better team.

Now for Forest and Jonjo! 🙂

Thought we were great in the first half, should have had 3 or 4.

Quite concerning that we lost so much control second half. Not sure what’s going wrong but we just don’t look as slick and solid as we used to. Hopefully this win breeds a bit of confidence back and we can use it as a springboard.

What’s happened to Bruno? He was anonymous today.

Isak motd by a mile for me.

MOTD2 is apparently going to be only 14 mins long tonight. There were 4 games today with a total of 8 goals (and countless other chances) yet they can only manage 3 1/2 minutes of highlights per game?!?

I think Bruno is still carrying that ankle injury…he was very slow today but still had an impact on the game.

Hopefully 5 days rest will see him in a better place on Friday

Wolves did actually play some decent ball at times. Their coach is pretty good!
    Can’t dominate every second!
The goal we gave them put us into survival mode. But we regained our composure and saw the game out… excellent progress!
    Phew!

just goes to show MOTD is normally 25% footage and 75% fluff and bollox from ex footballers stealing a living.

interesting that MOTD had half a million more people watching knowing the fluff and bollox wasn’t going spoil the football.

BBC take note…the fluff and bollox ain’t where its at!

I also think Bruno is still carrying an injury Sparky and not back to full fitness, it makes me wonder if Eddie decided to risk him today with big Joe absent !!! That`s assuming he is carrying an injury of course.

    Harley,
Winning breeds confidence and given our lack of goals and wins over the last couple of months, coupled with us battering them in the first half with only one goal to show for it, doubt must have started to creep in, in turn the crowd get anxious, I wasn’t there today but you could feel the crowd getting nervy. Coming back in to it like that will be a huge confidence boost and it sets up a cracker on Friday night. Get a good result on Friday, warm weather training during the int break and the season is well and truly back on track.

    Cheers mate

Only been dipping in and out and very recently.

No thoughts of posting after a year out but Linekergate today made me stick my thoughts in – I am worried at the fractures in society that are being reflected on Blog

Had a very difficult year ( now a widower) and whilst occasionally drawn back to Blog on match days again not sure if I will feel up to regular posting but at least I’ve managed some today and had some thoughtful welcome backs so………..

Basically I continue to take matters day to day maybe i’ll pop in and out as i used to

I see PIF bought a single share in nufc for £57M back in early Feb. I wonder if some of that is for infrastructure investments in the coming months.

    Good News every one!

3 points and a NUFC forward scores.

Pope is lucky and seems clumsy. Sometimes I’d wish hed just lump int into the stands.

Isak and maxi did well 1st half with lots of willing runs in behind. It was a good watch.

Agree Murphy getting flattened was lenient as last man (maybe made up for pope).

Shame about the daft error for the goal. This happens. But Shar stopped tracking his marker – so bares a little blame.

    Isak has to start.

Maxi did well but maybe only 1 half player?

Thought almiron showed great energy when he came on. The late triangle and backheel pass in on goal was brilliant.

Good win overall but harder than it needed to be.

    Massive 3 pts.

    So happy 😎

On Longstaff it seemed to me that he played deeper than Bruno quite a bit – Joe being out? Tactical?

We certainly missed Joe but Willock was very good today

    Mags,

I don’t think it can be that as the £57M was invested after the Jan window had closed (on 10th Feb) surely Everton were paid for Gordon immediately in Jan same for Ashby and West Ham as they may have wanted to reinvest the money in their own teams.

Also I doubt that there were no funds in the kitty when we went into the Jan window so I suspect it is for something else (although future month payroll cost may account for some of the money)

Great win today with JW, ASM and Isak really working well together.

A bit of an under the radar pass fron longstaff to miggy at the start of his goal. Fantastic.

Is Pope becoming a problem? So easily could have been successive reds.
