Newcastle End Losing Skid With 2-1 Win Over Wolves

Newcastle got back into the winning column with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Wolves at St. James’ Park. It was a difficult feat but the losing skid comes to an end with a critical win.

Newcastle played in the 4-3-3 with Pope in goal behind Trippier, Schar, Botman, and Burn. The midfielders were Guimaraes, Longstaff, and Willock. Isak played up front alongside Murphy and Saint-Maximin.

The match started brightly with both teams getting up the pitch. Newcastle had the bulk of possession but neither side was able to get any shot away in the opening stages of the game.

In the 20th minute, Newcastle escaped a disaster. Botman rolled the ball back to Pope on the edge of the box but a loose touch was pounced on by Raul Jiminez. The two players brushed shoulders with Jiminez dropping to the turf. A VAR check ruled confirmed it was not a penalty.

Newcastle took the lead in the 26th minute. A sweeping free-kick from Trippier was met by Isak in the middle of the box. The Swede headed the ball toward the far corner just past the outstretched palm of Jose Sa to make it 1-0.

The bar prevented a 2-0 lead in the 35th minute with Newcastle piling the pressure on Wolves. Trippier’s corner was pulled back by Burn at the far post. Guimaraes nodded the ball off the bar as Wolves escaped.

Howe didn’t make any changes as Newcastle came out for the second half with a slim 1-0 advantage. Wolves, who swapped out Adama Traore for Pedro Neto, started the half on the front foot but were limited to two shots from distance.

The match became a high-octane affair with both clubs having promising forays into the opposition’s end. Wolves saw much more of the ball while failing to create clear-cut chances other than a flashed shot from Moutinho that Pope did well to parry away in the 63rd minute.

Howe went to the bench in the 68th minute with Isak and Saint-Maximin being withdrawn for Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron. Murphy jumped over the left flank with Miggy taking up duties on the right.

It was a Wolves substitute to make the instant impact. Hwang Hee-Chan, who had just come on, rolled the ball into the goal to make it 1-1 in the 70th minute. Pope came out as Trippier slipped trying to clear the ball leaving an open net for the Wolves attacker.

The Magpies retook the lead in the 79th minute through Almiron. On a break, Longstaff found the Paraguayan down the right. He played a one-two with Willock before his deflected shot from a tight angle found the top corner.

Matt Ritchie made his entrance in the 85th minute for Murphy. Newcastle created a great move from a corner in stoppage time with the ball ending up at Botman’s feet. The Dutchman put his shot just wide of the near post.

Newcastle were able to see out the match and secure the points. They move to fifth in the table with matches in hand on the clubs around them. There are still plenty of kinks to iron out but the lads got the job done this evening.

Lee, happy with that today? Great stuff at times. Murphy was excellent for me. So too Willock and of course Isak.

    Brilliant game today.

Isak looked quality as always carragher described him as just a pest for defences, popping up everywhere.
Murphy did well, nothing special but had thier defence pinned back with his pace.
St maxi put in some belter passes and through balls, i dont know what match half this blog watched to say at maxi did nout, he created majority of the chances in the first half with some exceptional through balls. Willock looked sharp. Good movement and passes, covered for maxi when he tacked back or drifted inside.
Bruno was largely abscent, mis firing up until that deft back heel to almiron, rehearsed? No chance, just shows how good he is.
Botman, schar, burn st maxi, murphy, willock all unlucky not to have scored. Especially botmans miss, gutted for him.
I think dan burn struggled alot but kept composure and at times his clearances kept us in it. Trippiers slip was no fault of his own but gifted them an easy goal.
Pope made some amazing saves but at times looked calamatious (spelling ??)
Longstaff was hit and miss, at times played well but at times gave daft balls away.
Overall it was a game i enjoyed watching and on another day could have easily been 6-0.
No chance it was a red or pen, the ref eas right, player was half way down before pope touched him, great call.
Hope the attempted ignorance of the medical emergency in the crowd went well i.e i hope the person involved is ok. Well done on trippier stopping play to direct assistance.
Miggy loves being here. Anyone who says sell him needs to give thier head a wobble, plays his heart out every game and is never without a grin, reminds me of how cisse played when he was here, like an excited dog always chasing the ball.

Bruno passing over or thru a defence to Miggy was how the season got off to a good start for us.
That combo seems less evident but will I’m sure get back to the fore soon.

    Lads (and lasses)

It’s 11 months now but I’m doing OK and have a caring family that also keeps me focussed

It was unexpected and sudden ( despite her various conditions)

My passions (apart from ny family) NUFC and music have helped me get through the months

I knew that just as in all long term relationships (and given our ages) sooner or later one of us would have to spend some time alone – that knowledge though didn’t mitigate the pain and loss of my partner for over 50 years

It’s about reconfiguring your life and easing back into it rather than just doing what has to be done – today being an unexpected example and feels odd but I’ m glad I felt moved enough to re-enter my previous on-line world

I was brought up to count my blessings and there were many – the more the memories the greater the pain but i wouldn’t change them and indeed treasure them

    Cherish your loved ones

its not news to me of course and I’m sorry to affect the mood of anyone as that wasn’t my intention so please feel free to carry on as you intended i honestly don’t mind and thats how it should be

I never felt able ( or that it was appropriate) to come on last April when it happened – I’m generally a private person and it took a while before i ever posted on Blog inthe first place having read from beginning

I am aware several posters have suffered losses and health issues themselves or their partners over the years I’ve been coming on the Blog so it’s unfortunately not only myself that has been affected ( Ed has his own traumas to deal with) but all please do carry on and I’m sorry I’ve put a dampner on on first win in 8 games – I’ m celebrating!

I’ve actually been reading Blog live today (and posting) for first time in over a year – that’s progress alongside other things I’ve begun to do or rejoin in recent months – it’s how grief works 🙂

hope my emoji attempt works if i remembered it right

Much much happier with what I saw making those 4 changes gave us a freshness that’s been missing Wolves didnt know what to do as everything we did was unexpected

Murphy staying wide opened up space in the middle and he linked up great with Trippier also thought Almiron was great as a sub he looked fresh

ASM in the first half was excellent some of those little dinked passes into the channels he rarely does that but we also need runners and boy Isak and Willock were willing to do that excellent

Also thought Burn was so much better as well handled Traore all game

Interesting day for me. Chaos down at KX as power issue at York so trains getting cancelled and delayed. My train, cheap Lumo, was scheduled to leave at 1.20, over an hour late. But it would get me there for ko so I stuck around. It eventually left at 2.20 and arrived Newcastle at 5.05. Jumped in taxi, saw last 5 mins of first half, and of course Miggys winner, and that near Worldy from Botman. I was in Newcastle for 4 hours, of which 1 hour was footy. 7 hours on trains and a lot of waiting around. Home by 00.30. But worth it to see a win!

I also agree with Ruddy (I think) from earlier – this is a long goodbye from Maxi

Willock and Longstaff are still very young and relatively inexperienced. The fact they’ve played most of our matches this season, and in a team that sits 5th, is testament to their endeavour and team ethic. They will only get better and need to stay long term.

Also in terms of Longstaff he had 2 years of being “Coached” by Bruce that takes a while to get out of your system

Him and Willock don’t look out of place with Bruno at the moment compliment each other really well as they all try stuff some of it comes off some of it they lose possession

Bruno loses the ball a lot trying stuff but there’s a trust that the others will win it back quickly so he can take a risk

Magscar, it’s simply a case of perspective. Some things are much more important than a football match or Gary bloody Lineker’s Tweets. 🙂

I appreciate you replying and I’m really glad your return to the blog is another step towards a sort of normality, despite the enormity of the loss.

    God bless and welcome back.

Comments on match….. I actually agree totally with Carltoon’s earlier assessment. Job done, 3 valuable points, a win to stop the losing streak and all’s well with the world of NUFC.

I’ve given Willock stick in the past but thought he was brilliant Today. Good to see that the vast majority of us on here were vindicated in their request to see Isak start, he ran them ragged in the 1st half and 0-3 at that point wouldn’t have been unfair.

Overall despite the chewed fingernails at what needn’t have been so stressful ( I know we are still NUFC at times despite takeover) there was a lot to be pleased at in the performance and I’m hoping bodes well on the run in

The League Cup was a (welcome) distraction recently and coupled with othe teams working us out a bit during World Cup has made for some frustrating draws (and losses!) in 2023

It’s a challenge I’m sure Eddie and his coaches are well aware of but have limited options until Summer – I accept that overall the loss of Wood and especially Shelvey does impact us but believe that looking at decisions in the round there were the right call when made

I remember we had a slow start at begining of season with some frustrating draws and that cheated loss at Anfield but then we went on that amazing ride (best since my days watchng The Entertainers in the Gallowgate) so fingers croseed Eddie has discovered how to re-invigorate us to try and repeat that feat

Before a ball was kicked like most I was expecting top 10 finish ( maybe even 8th) and a cup run but now of course having experienced the highs of being once again in top 4 i’d be disappointed if we come up short but hope i can keep perspective if we don’t

As in season when we finished 5th we needed other top 6 sides to falter regularly and apart from Arsenal and Man City to an extent the others have all had wobbles some badly

Qualifying for Champions league does conflict me in some ways though

We are oveachieving as others underachieve but we do need that high finish to competebetter in Summer transfer market with those same clubs when our growing financial muscle ( even if hampered byFFP) will not be enough for our next stage targets

If we don’t and maybe end up in Europa then we will next seasonstill face a lot more fixtures with a perhaps lesser than hoped for quality and maybe numbers to help a more difficult campaign in trying again to breach top 4. This time the underachievers won’t all be misfiring either and will have recruited on top of their exisiting strong squads

So whilst top 4 challenge may not have felt like a realistic prospect to club at start of season i think it would be a mistake not to push for that hard now

Yes we will be ahead of schedule and probably struggle if we can’t get enough qulaity in but at least we will have got a foot back in door

I like most probably now realise just how difficult that breaking top 6 consistently and Europe even with takeover is going to prove

We may not have season on season progress and likely face hiccups along the way but i believe the only practical approach is to seize the opportunity if presented even in the knowledge that we might have overstretched and come a cropper the next season – we take the hurdles as best we can as we reach them

Sorry for a long post – it’s brought back to me how many hours i could lose in a day on here if i got involved 🙂

Been driving for 3 hours to get to my hotel set off straight after the game. Great result from the lads I thought we put a solid performance in. My stand out players were Isak and Willock both were absolutely fantastic to secure our victory.

Little Miggy you’ve go to love his strength of character. He has had some pelters from a few on here I said I hope he comes on and scores and he did just that.

On we march to our next game on Friday when we will play Forest where they may potentially have 3 ex toon players in their starting 11. They will be up for it, but we’ve got that elusive win under our belts and it will do the confidence a world of good.

Been a canny weekend with the results mostly going our way so we capitalised . When they went level with us I knew we’d get a winner and we did.
