Howe Reveals A Couple Of His Changes Were Forced

Newcastle have hopefully gotten their season back on track with the 2-1 win against Wolves on Sunday. Goals from Alexander Isak and Miguel Almiron proved enough to secure the full haul of points.

Newcastle have moved to fifth in the league table with matches in hand on the clubs around them. Next on the docket is a trip to Nottingham Forest where the lads will face two familiar faces in Jonjo Shelvey and Chris Wood.

Eddie Howe made the changes to spark the attack yesterday. He completely overhauled the front three with Alexander Isak, Jacob Murphy, and Allan Saint-Maximin getting starts. It turns out that some of the changes were forced.

Anthony Gordon was an unexpected absence. The winger was not in last week’s ‘Toon in training’ and it turns out he picked up an ankle injury at Manchester City. This is what Howe said about the missing attacker as published in The Chronicle:

“It was a strange one, because after the game there was no sign of an injury. But, I think, it was one of those that got worse the day of the game.

“It was from a tackle. It swelled up, we had it scanned. We were hoping that we could get away with it, and he would be all right, but unfortunately not, so he’ll probably miss the next two games.

“Not sure whether he’ll be back after the international break. We hope so, but not 100% certain.”

Callum Wilson was also not 100% fit after a tough week leading up to the match. Howe revealed the striker has again been struggling with an illness saying:

“(He) had a little bit of illness, nothing serious,”

“He did very, very well to make himself available to me today. He wasn’t 100 percent to take to the pitch but he did for the cause.”

While Howe’s lineup was affected by injuries, illness, and the suspension of Joelinton, the lads were able to get back into the win column. Now the focus shifts to Forest in another massive opportunity to secure three more points.

Catchy – that’s exactly what I meant about refugees. If the government would just reintroduce fair schemes for asylum seekers to come into this country, then virtually all of us would agree they’d need to stop these people traffickers putting people on small boats to get to the UK. I think the only schemes open are to people from Ukraine and Afghanistan, the others have all been closed and that’s disgusting.

Thing is, it’s disingenuous from the government too. The economic migrants who come here without permission should just be processed quickly and deported, simple as that. But they’ve cut the relevant department for that too.

We want the same thing: a fair amount of immigration from genuine asylum seekers and people who can add value to our economy but not an open door for anyone to come and have a better life.

Catchy – I’m sure many people could give facts about what happened to their family too that would present the opposite argument.

I am sorry with what happened to your family for sure. Just gotta remember that plenty of people had serious things happen that were because of that damn virus directly too. It was a crappy thing to experience.

Again, sorry to hear your family has been through a rough time.

Wilson has never done well for us coming off the bench. Should have got that 3rd centre forward even on loan from somewhere

Nice to see we could still field a very competitive team with Wilson and Almiron on the bench, plus some injuries to key players.

It’s why I don’t think we need a load of players still. A striker to replace a fading Wilson, a top creative midfielder and a left back.

Also if we are going to replace ASM then obviously a top replacement, but I’m very happy having him in the squad.

The more I see the penalty decision the more I feel it was the correct decision.
At the time I thought Jiminez made too much of it and if he remained on his feet he would have scored.

Had to happen with Lineker. No other way around it other than him coming back. Good news.

Agree on the penalty. I feared the worst when it happened but when I saw the replay, he barely touched him. There was no tangle of legs or arm across him. Just a slight brush of shoulders and he threw himself to the floor.

My heart was in my mouth though that they’d get the right decision. Couldn’t believe it could have all happened again.

Morning all. I was really pleased with how we took the game to Wolves in the first half after a cagey 10 minutes. Maxi and Isak played well together and it was a joy to see Murphy bombing down the wing putting in testing crosses. Wilson’s continued bout of illness is concerning but with only one game to go before the international break we’ll have to be careful how we use him and Bruno. If Bruno is struggling with his ankle how about benching him on Friday and putting big Joe in the middle as he combines very well with little Joe.

For Friday, more of the same please. 🙂

Catchy, our life experiences will always affect our opinions. I’m really sorry you’ve had such a tough time.

TDS @41, agree with all of that.

Scott’s posted exactly what I was going to say. I don’t think it was a penalty. The wolves player seemed to throw himself into/across Pope.
I also thought, if Salah was denied a goal scoring opportunity by Pope, then it was a red card for the foul against Murphy. A more clear cut opportunity

    Firstly thank you.

My point to both Adam and Munster is the tweet is a direct reference to Nassee Germany, he said 30s , and only one bad thing happened at that time. And that is simply out of order, as no one wants a repeat of what happened then.

I’m not sure there is an opposite to that.

Adamn – think he was careful in what he said to be honest, genocide didn’t happen until the 1940’s and Lineker mentioned the 1930’s. He didn’t mention genocide at all and everyone is quick to jump to the conclusion that he’s referring to that, when the dates don’t even line up.

    Not correct.

The Naz’s were blaming and targeting the Jews from the off and it was one of the reasons why they got into power. Many Jews saw what was coming and left Germany before the start of the war, those who couldn’t were persecuted before and during the war.

It’s turning a blind eye to even suggest Lineker wasn’t referring to the racist propaganda of the Naz’s in the 1930’s. Likening a UK Govt, of any party, to that regime is abhorent and it is that accusation that has led to the massive reaction.

The right way out of this is for Lineker to maintain his general opinion but apologise for that 1930’s reference. That way his right to free speech is upheld and the BBC get out of the massive mess this situation has caused.

    Whatever else…

The Pope VAR decision proves there is no bias against NUFC as some have suggested.

It defo wasn’t a clear and obvious penalty – more of a slight shoulder charge with no arm around the player or a trip – and in that respect VAR was right not to interfere.

    Isak
Thought he had a excellent game.
But when he was put through umpteen times first half, no one bust a gut to get into the box for a cross, so time and time again he had to hold the ball up or try to beat three or four players.
Get that sorted then could be quids in

    Catchy

Linaker’s tweet referred to the way certain peoples were targeted and scapegoated as being immigrants who were responsible for the state of Germany and its economy in the early thirties. That led to the popularity of an ex army Corporal who exploited the anti-Jewish, black and gypsy feelings he’d encouraged.

    Sound familiar?

    Anyway, enough.

    Cool Davas.

I noticed during the match that there wasn’t really a good look at the handball after Bruno’s header. From the bit I seen (from distance) it looked as if we could have had a good shout there. I wonder the lack of any decent angle saved wolves from a penalty against there.

Yeah I haven’t actually seen a replay of it so I’m not sure. They seemed to gloss over it. Wouldn’t have mattered if Bruno had scored 🙂

I also liked Richie’s reaction at the Botman miss. He obviously thought it was going to be a goal. 🙂

The defenders hand was so far away from his body that I thought it had itself been disembodied.

Pleased Matt Richie is getting a bit of pitch time. May be a little more shoring than the young Geordie maradona. Though I do want to see Anderson get more pitch time himself.

I love the number of people who come on, make a political statement, then say “anyway that’s enough”.

It would be enough if you just didn’t make the statement in the 1st place.

In a divided and polarised situation, you can’t drop in an incendiary comment and not expect blow back. Just leave it out, follow the CoC rules.

And to all of you thinking I’m a hypocritical b’stard, you’re right, I’m guilty too, but not on this occasion. 😉

That Dujan Richards lad was apparently offered a better route to “1st team football” with some guarantees of game time by Chelsea, according to the Jamaican Manager.

How could they fall for that heap of lies, the Chelsea academy is where 100’s of young lads go to rot.

I think he’ll live to regret that decision unless he turns out exceptional.

My tv froze a few minutes before it and when it came back, the game was over so I missed it.
