Newcastle’s Miss On Striker Explained As Young Goalkeeper Now In The Sights

Newcastle missed out on Dujuan Richards after the teenage striker signed for Chelsea late last week. The Phoenix All Stars Academy product had impressed during a two-week trial with Newcastle, who did make an offer to sign him permanently.

However, Chelsea beat Newcastle to the youngster’s signature with what is being described as a better offer with a clearer path to the first team. The Chronicle has published the following from Phoenix All Stars Academy president Craig Butler:

“It wasn’t a sudden switch, whenever you manage a player it is important that you look at all available options and choose the best possible offer.

“Newcastle really did a great job and made a big effort to get him and we appreciate everything that they have done. Newcastle presented a very good offer and so did Genk and Ajax. But for us, Chelsea presented the best one.

“Chelsea were not just better from a financial perspective but also in terms of his football pathway and the plan for the player. He will be in the first team and that is very important to me.

“If he is to go out on loan, I will be integral in the decision as to where he goes. But Chelsea are looking to put him in their first team and they have provided a plan, and that plan really fits ‘Whisper’ going forward.”

Richards had spoken to the Chronicle last week expressing his belief that he had impressed during his trial. His head was likely turned by the Blues with a better financial package. The clearer path to the first team rings a little hollow.

Newcastle are still hunting for talent. The Sun is reporting Fleetwood Town’s Stephen McMullan is now firmly in the Magpies’ sights. The report claims Newcastle have already met with the 18-year-old goalkeeper’s entourage.

McMullan hasn’t made his debut for Fleetwood though he is a Northern Ireland U19 international. He put pen to paper on a long-term contract to 2024 in January of this year. He had joined from Northern Ireland’s Warrenpoint last summer.

TY, He is still injured as far as I am aware.

In other news I thought I had beaten you in H2H FPL but I way yet be wrong. You captianed Toney and I did too but didn’t confirm it so Haarland today a saw Haarland was still my captain. But I have one other still to play again this gameweek that you dont (Veltman). This is going to be close.

TDS, it is virtually a certainty that Richie, Dummett M. Longstaff and Clark will leave as they are all out of contract. Gillespie is out of contract too but may get a new one depending on the Darlow/ Karius situation along with how the coaches feel about our younger keepers (which also includes Langley but who is also out of contract in the summer)

Fraser seems nailed on to leave given recent events.

As for anyone else it is hard to say. As you say it depends on who is willing to be a squad player. In the case of Lewis I hope he leaves but I feel at best we might be able to loan him out – I can see any club saying “we will pay cold hard cash to buy him” would like to see Hendrick go elsewhere too.

I would keep Lascelles if he is happy to stay but look for a right sided CB regardless.

Hayden (decent player though he was for us) is an example of all that is still a big problem for us post Ashley

We don’t have saleable players ( other than Wood and Shelvey who left in January – I know Wood was a loan but expect it to become permanent) that would benefit us to sell

Our income streams remain relatively poor in the main for even a top 10 club and i don’t think they are going to increase significantly soon enough although Club are planning for them

We can reduce wages bill though which we need both for incoming transfer reasons but also i understand to comply with ( forthcoming) changes to European competitions rules on wages to T/O ratios

Wynsleap, i think its perfectly acceptable to ask questions about why we are not getting the “superkids” , without slagging off the owners. It seemed remarkable that we should have Dujuan onsite and still lose him. We have to accept that we dont offer a lot currently though in terms a facilities, reputation etc

Magscar, exactly – saleable players / contracts are still a huge issue for us in the short to medium term and you are correct that the new FFP rules take into account wages as a proportion of income. As you say our income is rubbish for a club of our size (due to to guess who and the lack of desire from good sponsors to be associated to him, his brand and our club in during his tenure)

That latter will change, starting this summer as some deals come up for renewal and we will get much better ones. Any European footy would boost this and other income streams too.

As the owners have always said this is a project. Any money cannot fix everything immediately due to FFPs ever changing rules which are primarily and increasing designed to slow clubs in our position down and keep the status quo in European leagues and competitions more or less as it is.

It will be a fun ride though and I am convinced NUFC will ultimately become the club we all want it to be. The process so far is very much in the right direction.

I think the reality is that if a decent offer comes in for Lascelles we will have to let him go – he’s one of the saleable players we can upgrade

I expect a younger centre back will arrive in Summer anyway given Schar’s and Burns ages and unlikley Howe would want either of those to leave

As Jail mentions if Kraft stays ( as i think he might as Manquillo will be let go) he can cover CB also

I think Lascelles deserves a “good” move excellent player and captain that he has been for us

Magscar, agree again. If the right offer comes in and Lascelles wants to leave then he will go. If he doesn’t leave though he is still a good squad member. A lot will depend on other movement inbound and outbound so it is hard to be sure what will happen beyond the obvious out of contract players.

    Evening Bob,

I very respectively need to correct you when you linked devolution to nationalism that couldn`t be further from the truth, also we in Northern Ireland and Scotland were forced out of the European Union against our wishes after both our countries voted against B….T and it has caused great tension in this part of Ireland Bob, i never ever want to see the troubles kick of here ever again mate, i have lost friends from both sides of the divide and attended many funerals and it leaves a mental scare, the blame for making the United Kingdom much weaker and which will ultimately lead to the break up of UK lies squarely at the door of the extreme nationalist elements in the Tory Party ably backed up by those nut jobs in the ERG. Not having a go at you Bob as your a real gentleman and you have enough on your plate at the moment with your wife and her health issues.

    Munster Mag,
Yesterday or the day before you made a big song and dance about us being the only club to host the BBC in your quest to exercise your right to criticise, the story was completely unfounded by a deliberate shit stirrer. We know absolutely nothing about why we never signed him so why do you feel the need to criticise it. Why not discuss the possible reasons why we didn’t get him rather than point the finger?

I’m mostly on your way of thinking on Lascelles but someone made a good point about him being our Wes Morgan, if he’s happy to be fourth or fifth choice don’t you think he’s not only excellent in the dressing room but can still do a job when asked.

One question I have about Dujuan/Whisper or whatever his name is this question:

Had anyone here heard of him a fortnight ago?

I suspect not many if any. I also suspect there would be poeple who would complain if we signed him then loaned him to Hearts or a Championship club.

As for Richards, ive already given reasons as to why chelsea got him, such as money, pull of London and Chelsea’s pull. But on face value, as others have said, its annoying to lose a guy we had on our patch, and it doesnt seem that we didnt want him.

However, thats life, as i said previously on the matter, but its 0-4 in our pursuit of recent young stars, as Rotonda and others pointed out.

Magic, I am still hopefully going to meet up with you and any others at the D&P. I won’t have a ticket for the game I suspect but will ask a mate who is a season ticketer if he can get me one. However if he can’t I live locally so would probably just stay at the D&P to watch the game.

I will buy you a pint if you beat me at pool mate. Having said that I played a mate of mine for the first time this year at 9 ball (having won the 3 last previous games in a row last year) I was 12-10 up in a race to 13 and I lost!! Luckily we were at our club early so played double or nothing and I hammered him 13-7 in the second match. I claimed that I had won’t statistically, morally, psychologically and everything – must say I was a terrible winner. It was like that scene from Shallow Grave after Ewan McGregor played Chris Eccleston at squash.

    😀

Munster why is it 0-4, what about the young players we have signed in recent times (I won’t count Gordon) but what about Ashby, Kuol, Jude Smith, Alex Murphy, Charlie McArthur?

I get that this Jamaican kid showed up for a trial so we must have had a certain level of interest in him and according to his agent we made an offer.

As for some other links to players (eg some of the South Americans which I assume you count as ones we missed out on) how true are they?

If we scout a player what do you think a club/agent does? They publicise it dont they? irrespective of our actually level of interest in a given player. Interest cane wane based on performances during scouting missions and/or high price tags.

I cant say we haven’t missed out on the world’s next wonderkid but then again no-one can say wirh any level of certainty that we have missed out on one.
