Newcastle Rekindle Interest In Midfield Enforcer – Report

Newcastle have reportedly rekindled their interest in Fulham’s Joao Palhinha ahead of what looks to be an active summer window. The 27-year-old has been a revelation since signing for Fulham last summer for the bargain fee of £17m.

The Sun is reporting Newcastle are among six Premier League clubs holding an interest in Palhinha. For Newcastle, the interest is not new as he was on their radar as recently as February of last year.

Newcastle didn’t move for the Portuguese international, who has starred at Craven Cottage for the resurgent Cottagers. The defensive midfielder’s value has increased significantly just 8 months after from his move to West London.

The Portuguese international is one of the primary reasons Fulham are fighting for a European place in their return to the Premier League. Fulham has fallen off the pace in recent weeks without their suspended midfield enforcer.

There are some issues with Newcastle’s interest as he doesn’t quite fit the profile at St. James’ Park. He’ll turn 28 this summer while his price tag could reach a staggering £50m with Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham on his trail.

Palhinha would be an outstanding signing but Newcastle are likely to look elsewhere for their deep-lying midfielder. The club have shown they will not overspend and prefer to sign targets under the age of 25.

    Dazzler

It was great to use when people banged on about how Joelinton played as a wide attacker for Hoffenheim. Even though the stats then showed he played the overwhelming majority of games for them as center forward haha

So, the $63M is Isak a CF or striker or are they one and the same.

Watching that match cam I was wondering when the 1st goal went in just how far the roar carries?

    From NUFC.com
There’s a link to a survey relating to the setting up of a new supporters club, by a Darren Curry.
Not to rival NUST but to be a viable alternative.
Anyone know what this is about?
We have a very active London one which did great work for the Wembley final.
Is it trying to supplant regional clubs?
Are we risking having too many?

When the first goal went in I must have been at Durham on the very delayed Lumo. I didn’t hear the roar but was plugged into 5Live via ear buds!

I could be wrong here but I always thought of a striker as someone who really just tries to get on the ball end of balls and score. I guess someone like Lineker, Shearer and probably Wilson. I’ve always seen a centre forward as someone more flexible who can drop deep or drift out wide as the team requires. Players like Rooney, Kane, and Isak fit that description for me.

Isak is a very good forward, who has pace, quick feet and can score with his head and feet. And extremely mobile. Who needs a CF if you have 2 more like him interchanging positions all match.

I think is terminology is changing and centre forward is/was seen as a Chris Wood, Didier Drogba, Shearer type who were primarily target men, Isak is way than just a target man, however, he proved that he was with that heon any great CF would be proud of that header

Raj – I would say that a player like Wood is more of a striker. His job is mostly to be in the box, hold up the ball, and score. Pretty old school. My understanding is that a centre forward’s job is broader.

I agree with your strongest 11 except I’d include Burn.

He’s been among the best LBs in the league and he’s not even a lb!

Way fewer goals are going in from his side.

He’s deceptively fast. The little fast wingers just aren’t getting the better of him. Their three paces are one of his and he’s in with a timely challenge, time and time again.

And, imagine the intimidation if the defender is a full foot taller.

Many are willing him on to fail (why?), but he just puts in performance after performance.

He’s an important part to, statistically, the best defence in the PL.

    You’re welcome Dan 🙂

    CleveleysBob:

Agree wholeheartedly about how we’re in line to get, well, pretty much every major player in the world. At this point the “pundits” have zero credibility. Do they just make it up to draw eyeballs? Or do they think that if they throw enough stuff against the wall that something will stick?

I’m American, so I’m puzzled by something and hope that somebody here can explain it: I constantly see reports on these sites to the effect that one team is openly expressing interest in signing somebody that’s currently under contract with another. And that player has voiced no interest (sometimes even negative interest) in going to that team – or maybe any other team. Here, a team that did something like that (in any sport) would be guilty of tampering and the penalties are pretty severe. Are there no tampering prohibitions in European football?

    Jail,
Probably not coming up for Saints match. I’m planning on coming up for Manure and Spurs and will be pushing it a bit on the domestic front if I also come up for Saints. But at the moment I can’t drive because of my defibrillator and don’t know when DVLA will be giving me back my licence. I should be driving now but I messed up the form, so find myself in a large backlog. Point being it’s hard to plan trips as I normally drive and stay with my mum in Bishop Auckland. My other option is to book last minute trains. So my plans could change and I could end up dropping Spurs and going to Saints. Won’t know for a few weeks yet. I was thinking it would be good to meet up with fellow bloggers like yourself and Magic, but may have to wait for another time.

I’m pretty sure that there are regulations about tapping players up (if that’s what you mean) but they don’t generally seem to be enforced.

ie our pursuit of Maddison could be viewed in the light.

etip2011 – 99% of it is media BS. Either totally made up or sometimes just exaggerated. Newcastle United scout spotted at XYZ’s reserve game and media creates a story that we’re after their star youngster and hope to complete a deal for him this summer…

Blah blah BS. Creates a topic of discussion for some fans but it’s just pie in the sky rubbish most of the time.

Officially it is illegal to ‘tap’ a player up, most of the news/rumours we hear is either leaked by agents to drum up interest or his BS put on forums like twitter by wannabee ITK’s (In The Know)

Interesting listening to West Ham fans on Talksport slating Moyes and their transfer business

A lot of folk on here moaning at the club for not signing Scammaca, Paqueta and Cornet all of them have flopped big time

Scammacca in particular looks lost although in Serie A he looked great how many players come from that league and flop ? Best to avoid attackers from there

Probably doesn’t help them Moyes doesn’t know how to setup an attacking team

Look at your neighbours pet parrot and that’s enough for the red top (cheap) press to make up a story that he’s joing your club.
Only certainty is when a player has signed and wears the shirt.
Rest of the time is gossip, tittle tattle and made up guff by the media to fill pages and air time.
Same as Elivs living on the moon , which is nonsense as we all know he’s in Venezuela.

Colback has started four times this season and 2 x 45 minutes, not sure if they were starts or brought on at half time, he’s featured in 11 of 27 games, three of those starts were in the last four games but he didn’t feature at all against Spurs.
