Newcastle are planning up to six additions in the summer according to the latest from Chris Waugh in The Athletic. On the agenda are a left-back, a right-footed center-back, a defensive midfielder, another number 8, and two versatile forwards.
The top target remains Leicester City’s James Maddison, who could potentially fill the number 8 or versatile attacker roles. Newcastle are expected to make a serious push for the 26-year-old this summer as he enters the final year of his contract.
Other familiar midfielders Waugh cites are Manchester United’s Scott McTominay, Ajax’s Edson Alvarez, and Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, though the Ecuadorian is considered a longshot with other top clubs in pursuit.
Three left-backs are also named with Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney seemingly the preferred target. Howe reportedly is a long-time admirer of the Scotland nternational. Fulham’s Antonee Robinson and Nottingham Forest loanee Renan Lodi are also thought highly of.
Up front, it appears Howe wants some more young hybrid wide forwards à la Anthony Gordon. Athletic Club’s Nico Williams is high on the list. In fact, he was considered during the January window. The 20-year-old has been watched extensively in recent years.
Newcastle have also watched Sheffield United attacker Iliman Ndiaye in recent weeks according to The Sun. The 23-year-old has had a standout campaign for The Blades, who are second in the Championship.
Internal discussions are at an early phase while Newcastle try to secure a European place. Seventh should be enough to seal a ticket to the Europa Conference League with Howe hoping to have plenty of squad depth for his second full season in charge.

Comment #42Dayvan – not good for the blog though is it mate? I mean, it’s no secret that I can’t stand Fenham. His only redeeming quality that I’m aware of is that he’s a Toon fan…but the argument and insults aren’t fun for many who visit the blog.

Spot on. God knows why these potentially half decent programmes always have to have so much cheese in them which spoils it completely. Why do programme makers always assume we want them to be cheesy. Mind you when you look at the brains trust on something like goggle box you can see the single brain cell audience they’re pandering to.

Comment #49Lesh – some people just can’t help themselves it seems. The slightest provocation and they feel the need to go on the attack. Some people also don’t seem happy when the blog is peaceful, they go out of their way to stir it up and get attention.
Several people are guilty of the above at times, though obviously some more than others. Naming no names…

Comment #50You guys do know that talking about it and saying stuff like the penny might drop, you know i can’t stand him, some people can’t help themselves etc etc isn’t helping in the slightest and is just throwing fuel onto the fire and inviting responses? haha

How is a few people pointing fingers at someone and saying they don’t like him bringing things to an ok conclusion haha You’re smart enough to know all that does is point fingers at and poke at a hornets nest. Fair enough if you won’t respond later if he does, but it just carries it on again doesn’t it? If the blog is having a calm moment, probably best not to point fingers at people and poke them for a response.
I’ll say no more anyway as now i’m straying into that territory haha

I can understand the logic in people wanting Schar in defensive midfield/ Good at defending, good passer, can carry the ball well and has a decent shot on him. But when put into practice it doesn’t work. Less space to pick out passes, less room ahead of him to make those runs and they’re easier to spot and positional sense is totally different to playing center half.
In theory it sounds great. In reality it absolutely doesn’t work haha

Comment #57Adam – it wasn’t me who started the topic mate. I was trying to kill it off quickly. No insults from me…
Schar in midfield just seems a weird suggestion at this stage of his career. If he was really going to be good at it, either he or a manager/coach would have made it happen beforehand. Other than top players moving backwards when they lost their pace in their 30s, Joelinton is a pretty rare example of an experienced player changing his position.

Comment #59If I recall correctly, a previous incarnation of the move shär to DM debate was concluded and explained by a poster something along the lines of this:
The attributes that make schär look like he would be good in DM don’t work when you move him further forward. This is because when he moves into the more forward positions when he is a defender there isn’t an opposition player free to tackle him and therefore he has more time on the ball if he has lost the pressing opposition forward (see run for freekick that lead to first goal at the weekend).
When playing DM there is a dedicated opposition df or mf to press or close him and basically reduce his unpressured time on the ball.
I’m sure the original poster of this idea explained that t more better and succincter than me.

He’s building up his fitness no doubt about that, but it was good of him to tell the bench he was knacked.

Comment #64Tuff – that’s good responsibility I’d true. Would be very interesting to see his stats (especially km run) in that game compared to his typical stats in a game in Spain. I suspect that the PL is much more intense than he’s used to and Howe’s style of play is even more so.
If we can get an hour out of him in every game this season, I’ll be happy. Hopefully he’ll be firing on all cylinders next season.

Comment #68Pug, the pugs look very nice dogs. Good turn of speed and quick on the turn. Make a good full back.
Lesh, we’re on our 3rd Cavalier King Charles. Previous 2 were Blenheims like yours, current one is a tricolour. We’re convinced the tri is a bit more switched on than the Blenheims, but not a great sample size. Thinking of a ruby or Black and Tan next, but hopefully a good few years left of the tri. They have such a gentle temperament.

Comment #71An admission, I’ve never watched a single episode of Morse/Lewis/Endeavour.
My Mrs doesn’t like movies much so anything that involves concentration for 90mins or more is a big no no in this abode.
I watch movies on my Jack Jones, in the afternoons while she’s resting in the bedroom, Watching daytime rubbish, she loves medical shows and all these house move/rebuild type shows of which there seems a never ending supply of options either here or overseas. I can’t stand them, used to quite like Grand Designs, but even that’s had too long a life for my taste. 😀

You’re clearly fans of Cavaliers and I cam fully understand why. They have a lovely temperament and that seeming smile on their face.
While I can’t speak with any authority about the relative brightness of Blenheims, Tricolour and Rubies, our little un doesn’t seem like the brightest button in the box (yes, I know), but it doesn’t matter one bit.
As you’ll know, Cavaliers do come with their inherent heart-murmer problems and ours is no different. He’s 10 years old and on two daily medications to hopefully control any risk of damage. Add to that, the vet’s identified a non-malignant growth in the area of his anal glands and it can be said, he’s showing his age – as we all do.
No matter, as long as he’s with us and not suffering, we’ll enjoy him as I’m sure you and your family do your.

Comment #74If we get Maddison then other sought-after players will follow as his quality is well known and will attract others I’ve no doubt!
With him, Bruno and Joelinton in midfield we will improve hugely. Then another striker with goals in him, left back and defender we will be in contention for a champions league place!

Comment #75Lesh, our breeder tries to breed out the heart and hip problems, but our first 2 had heart murmurs. But I’ve got a defibrillator so we don’t mind heart issues in our family. The more the merrier!
As for anal gland growths, we’ve just had one removed from our tri and she’s 9. Expensive business!

Comment #77Is it 4231 with Maddison or does wor Eddie maintain the 433 Certainly more options for him during games to change things up. I like the prospect and hope we sign Maddidson.
Lacking a bit of sideburn discipline though it seems, sure wor Eddie will address that shortcoming early doors 😆

Comment #78Those Cavalier spaniels are more or less handbag dogs, or folk get prams to wheel them about.
We’ve got a proper dog an English Cocker Spaniel, she’s a retiree from the Duke’s Estate. Proper working dog. Seven years old. Excellent temperament. She’s bloody done her left back leg cruciate in so we are having to keep her in a crate hoping that it might heal. And avoid surgery.
Vet’s charge extortionate fees.

Comment #79Interesting that according to this article we’re are looking for 6 players. I think that is the maximum number realistically speaking. I recently read a very interesting article by The Swedish Rumble (available here – https://twitter.com/SwedishRumble/status/1619026560887177217?t=ZuVO4z_Gp3Awhtst84EaBg&s=19)
He estimates that we can only buy 3.5 Isaks (ie 3.5 players at the same cost as Isaks fee and wages) this summer and one of the assumptions this was based on was that we do finish top 4 so considers some CL income. Obviously without CL our spending power would be lower.
Given this I would think that 6 players is ambitious unless we can grab a bargain or two.
The positions we’re are allegedly looking for sound like exactly the correct ones though, right sided CB, LB, DM (I analysis think of DM as a 4 not a 6) 8 and an attacker or two.
