Reports Names Top Targets Ahead Of Transformational Summer Window

Newcastle are planning up to six additions in the summer according to the latest from Chris Waugh in The Athletic. On the agenda are a left-back, a right-footed center-back, a defensive midfielder, another number 8, and two versatile forwards.

The top target remains Leicester City’s James Maddison, who could potentially fill the number 8 or versatile attacker roles. Newcastle are expected to make a serious push for the 26-year-old this summer as he enters the final year of his contract.

Other familiar midfielders Waugh cites are Manchester United’s Scott McTominay, Ajax’s Edson Alvarez, and Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, though the Ecuadorian is considered a longshot with other top clubs in pursuit.

Three left-backs are also named with Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney seemingly the preferred target. Howe reportedly is a long-time admirer of the Scotland nternational. Fulham’s Antonee Robinson and Nottingham Forest loanee Renan Lodi are also thought highly of.

Up front, it appears Howe wants some more young hybrid wide forwards à la Anthony Gordon. Athletic Club’s Nico Williams is high on the list. In fact, he was considered during the January window. The 20-year-old has been watched extensively in recent years.

Newcastle have also watched Sheffield United attacker Iliman Ndiaye in recent weeks according to The Sun. The 23-year-old has had a standout campaign for The Blades, who are second in the Championship.

Internal discussions are at an early phase while Newcastle try to secure a European place. Seventh should be enough to seal a ticket to the Europa Conference League with Howe hoping to have plenty of squad depth for his second full season in charge.

Good craic Pete. I’m still kind of hoping that mine is in a deep state of dormancy but the leaves browned and dropped early last year and the buds haven’t formed like they have previously. On top of that me crow got a had of it last week threw it about for a bit. So not looking good.

I’ll probly trim the roots and replant it this season. Perhaps I can miyagi it.

There’s a guy in rippon who has a supposedly 900 year old hawthorn probably still doing the shows.

TDS, I don’t think we are far apart either, that is the thing it is an interchangeable term really and means different things to different people.

The modern game blurs the lines even further. It is the same with “wingers”.

The only positions that still offer any certainty are GK (but now they are supposed to play sweeper/keeper ideally) CB and DM.

It depends on the species. My ginko is alright outside in the summer but I usually put it in at least the greenhouse in the colder months. Didn’t do that this winter though… 😕

Taco – even CB and DM are complicated though! A CB like Schar, Maguire, Stones of Ferdinand who marauds forward as opposed to one who sits back. Similarly, Kante, Bruno, Keane, and Viera all DMs? Yet they got/get their fair share of goals too.

Trippier plays RB completely differently to the way Burn plays LB.

For me, I try to keep it simple by using positions to define where a player starts rather than his role in the team. So Trippier is a RB to be simple. Call him an attacking RB to be more detailed, just as you might call Schar a marauding CB or Isak a versatile CF.

Why not all just stop it? “He insulted me so I will claim the moral high ground and then follow that up with an insult or two because that will prove I was right”

Draw a line under it and talk footy or sod off.

TDS, also true but I think that GK, CB and DM are the most clearly defined positions in general terms.

I always preferred Swiss Rambles version of FFP. It was always more conservative. I had big rucks with a few on here over the topic but i always thought we wud be cautious enough, given the wealth we have and bar Isak, i think we have been pretty conservative

There, i’m a Tory and proud of it 🙂

Exactly, just as I called it earlier it haha must admit it can be entertaining sometimes but to be honest, if people want to have a slinging match, let them go for it. Just watch from the sidelines and chat around it. It’s only when others get involved or give a post game analysis on it then it gets annoying. As it drags it on and on and on. Just let them box it out, enjoy some popcorn while you watch if you want or just chat around it.

    Adamn,

It can be amusing, but it also drags the blog down in many ways….

Ed and Neil have previously provided guidance (widely ignored) on things not to do.

They have recently suggested that the future of this blog may hang in the balance.

It is fair to say some people prefer not to get involved in what should be a football blog for fear of being called out as supporting a specific political view or being asked to turn up at an empty car park in Gateshead at midnight!

The thing is we don’t have to all agree, but there are ways to disagree.
