Howe Touches On Competition For Places With Striker Missing Training

Newcastle kick-off the weekend’s Premier League action with a trip to Nottingham Forest on Friday. Eddie Howe gave his press conference ahead of the clash this morning. The head coach revealed he hopes to have the majority of his squad available but did stress a few players have missed training.

One of those is Callum Wilson, though Howe didn’t identify any players. The striker confirmed on the Footballers’ Football Podcast that he has missed training this week. Here is what he stated the following while referencing Alexander Isak:

“I’ve not trained in over a week now. So that’s why we have brought him to come into the team and not let it hamper when someone comes out.

“That’s what we’re trying to build, to get players who are almost as good as each other.

“It was a great performance from him [Isak]! But as someone who plays in his position you’re thinking ‘ah it’s going to take me another week to get back in’.”

This is nothing new for Wilson, who missed training towards the end of last week with an illness. He still managed to make a cameo in the 2-1 win against Wolves. It appears that Isak will be getting a second straight start with Wilson available from the bench.

Howe welcomes the competition as it keeps players on their toes. Miguel Almiron was also used from the bench last weekend with Howe confirming it was to rest the club’s leading goalscorer.

Howe said the following about squad rotation per Lee Ryder’s Twitter account:

“I’ve always said competition for places is key to sustaining results. We have that within the squad when everybody is fit. When we don’t, the squad is quite light in terms of bodies.

“I think it is vital you have the opportunity to do that (rest players) it is a long season with cups and Premier League, and also the way we play is demanding. We ask a lot of the players.”

Howe will be without at least three players with Emil Krafth, Anthony Gordon, and Joelinton ruled out. He still has plenty of options to make some changes but may opt to keep with the eleven that picked up the crucial win last weekend.

Howe also revealed that Gordon’s injury is slightly worse than expected. The Shields Gazette has published the following from Howe on the January signing:

“The scan wasn’t plain sailing, it wasn’t a shoe-in. It wasn’t a week or two injury.

“It’s slightly more serious than that, so we’re doing everything we can to get him back as quickly as possible.

“At the moment he’s in a period where he’s staying off the grass, staying off his feet, and the injury’s healing. It feels good, but he’s got work to do to get ready for that game.”

I am hoping for a big win tomorrow.

Forest have some absolute shite in midfield and they are poor at the back.

They do have a good keeper.

    HWTL!

A lot is being made of Forest’s home form, they’ve been steadily getting worse and a goal shy Everton managed two past them. An avid Spurs fan who hosts Planet FPL does an excellent 1hr 40 ish pod and reviews all the games from the weekend. He was at the Spurs Forest game and said they were by far the worst team he’s seen this season. We won’t underestimate them but I don’t think we’ve got that much to worry about.

Bill thanks for the update on the U21s and particularly young Alex Murphy, good to know he is a regular in the U21s and yes i know he was involved in the 1st team squad in the cup match out in Saudi, he is probably on the fringe`s of the 1st team squad Bill, and if he keeps making progress he might possibly break into the 1st team squad in 18 months or 2 years, keep me posted on his progress please Bill.

Just had a glance at the table.

44 points achieved after 25 games.

44 points has pretty much been our seasons’ total in the last 5 or 6 years.

    Very nice.

I really think we need to be hitting form now. We are well positioned in the league. Our first team has only been beaten by what most would call elite teams so it’s now time to convert those draws we’d been getting into victories.

    The time is now.

But even so, what a season it has been so far.

I think Johnson is out for tomorrows match and after watching them last week against Spurs they looked totally void of ideas going forward….other than Jonjo trying to thread the needle or going for his pick the player out from 40 yards which no one ever got on the end of. I think our chances on goal will start falling for us and we come away with a decisive and clean win going into the break.

Now we’ve established, compliments of the great Eddie H, that Isak is indeed a centre forward, what happens to our wishes that we’ll sign Ivan Toney, Ramos or Vlahovic. None of those three are coming cheap and none of those three are coming to share game time with Isak. What do we do here then?

Havent done these for a few weeks now but here are Forest fans thoughts:

    “I’ll be happy with a draw which unfortunately I don’t think we’ll get…??”

“Can’t see owt other than a loss. Geordies 2-0 Forest”

“geordies 3-1 and the geordies cant score. The headless chickens will gift them 2 goals as per usual..”

“Newcastle win followed by an early bath with a toaster for me.”

“Easiest game of the season, expect Cooper will come out with a deck chair and a cigar in the 2nd half when we’re inevitably sitting on a 4-0 lead (Ok the cigar might be an exaggeration)”

“Wood can’t play against parent club so that’s a plus”

“Win for me. The Toon are going through a bit of a trough and lost that early season sparkle. If we have that zip and energy in our play and the determination to get the job done, we can surprise them and the rest of our relegation rivals.
We will need it, now only two points in it.”

“Newcastle starting to look like the Newcastle they probably should be on paper. Some decent players for sure but never a Champions League challenger in a million years”

“The Toon looked scary 1st half against Wolves – reminded me of our game there when they should and could’ve been out of sight by half time. Their speed and movement was frightening. If they repeat that on Friday we’re in for a tough watch.
With some luck and a lot of optimism we might nick a point – more likely a Toon win unfortunately.”

“I bet Newcastle now regret the clause in the contract prohibiting Chris Wood from playing against his parent club.”

In summary it seems they don’t fancy their chances against us. I hope they are right.

Taco, that one fan saying an early bath with a toaster was best. As a toon fan over 14 years of MA and a few of SB I can say I know how that one fan is feeling.

Raj, on strikers how about Chupa Akpom from boro he is banging them in and could we relatively cheap compared with Toney and Tammy Abraham. Although after checking he is 27 so not young.

Raj I think it is likely that next season we will keep Wilson, sign a young CF (not sure who) but someone willing to be a back up and then possibly someone else who is flexible to play anywhere across the front line. I am not convinced any of those players will be big names like Vlahovic. If there is a big name added to the front line then surely there will only be one.

I think the bulk of our cash will go on a couple of top midfielders.

    But just my guess really.

Raj…It was an answer to your question at the end of #172. By answer, I really mean piss take, but I’m sure you’ll connect those dots.

I agree with TTT with regards to attackers. Expect a youngish backup player, rather than someone deemed as more ready made than say Isak, but enough potential to be pushing.

If Isak, is now the main front man next year we need to surround him with players like Mahrez and Foden, Salah, Darwin and Gapko, players that can play more on the wings but can score the goals, Miggy has done it this year but not Maxi so much.

Is the idea Gordan in the Maxi role, we cannot tell yet if he can do that job because of game time, will he be as lethal as say Foden and Darwin.

Can Miggy be as lethal as say Salah and Mahrez over a few seasons, if that’s the plan can they also fit in the temporarily role if Isak was injured. I know Man City has Álvarez and Liverpool have Firmino.

With that view will Newcastle look for a striker for subbing and or playing to give Isak a rest.

It’s going to be a fascinating summer window to see exactly how Eddie is going to set up next year.

Evening all, I think it’ll be the same starting 11 tomorrow. Forest have a poor midfield and a shaky defence. Maxi, Isak and Murphy to terrify them then Miggy to apply the coup de gras or ice the cake. A couple of early goals for us would be most acceptable.

Carltoon, Rom popped in last Sunday but didn’t hang around. I hope everything’s alright. Also, I can’t recall seeing Niafron or Darnik lately either.

Time to watch Eddie’s press conference.
