Justice Prevails As Newcastle Win 2-1 At Nottingham Forest

Justice reared its often veiled face at the City Ground tonight. Newcastle put in a terrific performance to take all three points in a 2-1 win at Forest. It was again a difficult task as VAR flashed its injustice but Alexander Isak was there to make sure the three points went Newcastle’s way.

The lads played in the 4-3-3 with Pope in goal behind a back four of Trippier, Schar, Botman, and Burn. The midfield consisted of Guimaraes, Longstaff, and Willock. Isak spearheaded the attack with Murphy on the right and Saint-Maximin on the left.

In the opening minutes, there was some concern with Schar. The Swiss defender was tackled from behind by Andre Ayew and looked to have picked up an ankle injury. He received treatment and was able to continue.

Newcastle created a great chance a few minutes later. Murphy did well down the right before pulling the ball back for a surging Willock in the box. The midfielder skied his shot into the stands.

In the 12th minute, Newcastle again created a golden chance. From a free-kick, Trippier passed the ball into the box to Isak. The Swede pushed forward before blasting his shot off the crossbar. Forest cleared and escaped.

The first goal would go to the hosts in the 27th minute. A ball over the top for Ayew was collected by Botman who then played a blind back pass which Emmanuel Dennis ran onto. Pope came to contest Dennis but he coolly lofted it into the open net for the 1-0 advantage.

Forest were saved by the woodwork once again in the 35th minute. Murphy got the ball from Renan Lodi down the right and tried to center the ball. It was deflected into the path of Longstaff, whose long-range shot was deflected before hitting the crossbar.

In added time, Newcastle found the leveler. Joe Willock was freed down the right by Saint-Maximin on a break. The midfielder lofted a cross into the box. A surging Isak improvised to flick the ball into the net with his trailing foot to make it 1-1 at the break.

Howe made a change on the left flank bringing Elliot Anderson on for Allan Saint-Maximin to start the second half. The Geordie started brightly winning a lost cause of a long ball into the box a few minutes before launching a volley that Keylor Navas had to palm over the bar for a corner.

Near the hour mark, Anderson timed his run brilliantly with Willock trying to connect. The youngster slipped as Navas came to collect the ball. Guimaraes then tested Navas with a blistering effort from range but the Costa Rican was able to parry the ball away.

Anderson seemingly bagged his first goal for his hometown club soon after. A pitchside review ruled that Longstaff was in an offside position in the build-up. However, Felipe played the ball in an attempted clearance which Longstaff then deflected; a scandalous decision that should linger beyond tonight.

Murphy had a chance to reclaim the advantage in the 81st minute. It again was Anderson who was pivotal for the chance. The youngster was able to center the ball for Murphy, whose snatched shot went wide.

Howe made another change in the 84th minute with Murphy being withdrawn for Matt Ritchie. A few minutes later Pope was called into action to block a low shot from Brennan Johnson on the break.

Newcastle won a penalty in added time after Moussa Niakhate’s raised arm deflected Isak’s header. It was justice for the Magpies as Isak coolly sent Navas the wrong way before planting it into the net. Newcastle got their just desserts with the 2-1 win which was in part sparked by the superb performance of Elliot Anderson.

Rob …..I used to think that as well .
But now I think he would just be holding the likes of Anderson back who I would much prefer to have coming off the bench .
No, sell him on to Milan as u said.

I understand your post about young Anderson and him being a strong physical lad much like Wayne Rooney when he was a youngster, if he turns out even half as good we will have a player Ledge.

I’m not disagreeing. I can’t see that it was offside when 2 defenders played it. As I said earlier, the only thing I can think of, is that he was offside when the ball went through and the defender first played it against Isak, Maybe the ref thought he interfered with how the defender played it. I don’t know if that is true or not as I haven’t seen a replay of it.

Maxi should not displace Gordon when Gordon is fit again. The simple fact that Gordon was actually bought in January speaks volumes for the future of Maxi. And I’m a little bit sad about that because he has great talent and has been very entertaining.
But what this season has shown is that in a fitter and better team where the press is really important, he does not work hard enough. And if the owners are as ruthless as their ambition should demand, Maxi will be sold for decnet money in the summer.

I think with ASM the rule has to be if he has a good game you should drop him for the next 3 or 4 as he’s useless

Only Man City, Wolves games he has been good been pretty poor in lots of games he just doesn’t make good runs when there is no space

Compared with Anderson and Murphy lots of intelligent movement stretching defenders pass and move

Also thought Longstaff and Willock were excellent never gave up anything despite being kicked up and down the pitch all game

Anderson unlucky to be robbed, perfectly good goal. After Isak has played the ball, there is enough time for the defender to control the ball or clear it anywhere really. there is no deflection, easy cross to clear – hence A NEW situation arises. Longstaff in an offside position when Isak crosses is not relevant because there is a new situation after that. The ref got i wrong, should be onside. Glad we won in the end! HWTL

It makes me so confused how people still don’t get it.

He was in an offside position, he affected play from that offside position, be it indirectly or directly it doesn’t matter. He affected the play from an offside position even if it was indirectly.

Please say people understand this? Surely that’s clear enough now?

I said I wanted a ā€œcomfortableā€ game, – getting the winner in the 93rd minute does not constitute comfortable! My blood pressure will be in the stratosphere for a while. šŸ™‚

Great result, Isak getting better and better, EA had a great 2nd half, on that showing Gordon will struggle to get his place back, let alone Maxi.

Willock is now improving game after game and is beginning to look like the player we got on loan. Add a few goals and he’s a super star.

Bruno makes us tick, his work in midfield is extraordinary. Pity we’re making odd mistakes at the back, but that will get fixed. BDB is getting a bit over involved with on field spats and seems like a red card in waiting. I’d be tempted to put Targett in for next couple of games and let Dan think about his actions a bit.

I’m seriously chuffed, it’s great to be winning again, and let’s be honest the way we played no one could have complained if they’d both ended 4 nil to us we were that dominant.

    HWTL.

Now 2 weeks of boredom šŸ˜†
