Eddie Howe Provides Fitness Update As Break Begins

Newcastle have departed to Dubai for a warm-weather training camp after the 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest on Friday. The international break has come at a good time with many Magpies struggling with injury concerns.

The latest casualty is Miguel Almiron who suffered a thigh injury in training. The Athletic is reporting that Almiron will be lost for six weeks with the injury. Newcastle will have to soldier on through a congested April without their leading goalscorer.

Eddie Howe spoke on the injury concerns plaguing his squad after yesterday’s victory. He revealed that Allan Saint-Maximin was withdrawn at halftime with a tight hamstring. He also touched on why he didn’t introduce Callum Wilson in the second half saying:

“Allan wasn’t quite right today, physically, I didn’t think. He’s been carrying a tight hamstring. I don’t think it’s a pull, it’s just a little bit of tightness. For me, it was obvious during that first half that he probably wouldn’t be able to carry on.

“I didn’t want to expose Callum today, he hasn’t done a lot of training, so I decided to go with Elliot and he repaid me, he did really well. Hopefully, we’ll have Callum and Maxi fit and available after the international break.

“Fabian’s been carrying lots of different things in the last few weeks. He’s been carrying a foot problem and also had concussion, so I think it’s just a chance for him to rest his body and go again.”

Fabian Schar took a nasty challenge in the opening minutes yesterday but was able to see out the match. The defender has been a warrior this season and pulled out of the Swiss squad to get some rest for a lingering foot problem.

For Wilson, he’s struggled with illness numerous times this season. Howe added that he is also carrying some muscle tightness so it makes sense he stuck with Alexander Isak to the end at the City Ground.

He is some more from Howe on Wilson:

“He [Wilson] had a small bout of illness and then just a little bit of tightness, general tightness, no injury.

“But with Callum, I think we have to be very careful with him and make sure he’s available for the rest of the season.

“Callum’s a top professional. And he is driven more than anybody that I’ve ever worked with, so he will see Alex performing as he has done tonight and he’ll be delighted for Alex and the team.

“But it’ll only make his resolve even stronger to fight for that place.”

Hopefully, for the massive match against Manchester United at St. James’ Park after the break Howe will only be without Emil Krafth and Almiron. Getting Anthony Gordon, Wilson, Saint-Maximin, and Schar fully fit for April could be key.

Taco – goals are obviously crucial throughout the team. My point was that if Isak gets say 17 goals next season and perhaps Gordon, Almiron, and Maddison all weigh in with around 10 each, then we’ll very likely be firmly in the top 4 unless our defence is shocking.

Not really overlaps. Joelinton often drops deeper than Willock too. Newcastle have two 0.75 Kante at the moment. Joelinton and Bruno.

Not suprising when one of the two is not in the team, Newcastle’s performance dropped, especially defensively.

Your constant praise for manure, spuds and pool are aggravating. You seem to go out of your way to take a controversial approach and then criticize those on here who don’t offer the same praises to your favourites. Just because spuds are ahead in the standings doesn’t make them a better team. We have 2 games in hand. Give your head a wobble man.

Ottawa – I couldn’t give a stuff to be honest with you. It seems moronic to me that people are slagging off Spurs, Man Utd, and Liverpool yet 2 of those teams are ahead of us and Liverpool are just behind us. It’s not controversial to say that they have very good teams.

Where’s the joy in beating a “terrible team”??? What does that make our team? When we beat Chelsea and if we beat Liverpool/Man Utd/Spurs, I’ll know that we’ve beaten teams that have very good squads and some excellent players!

You can’t praise Kante as better than Bruno or Joelinton as Ottawa finds it aggravating to praise players at other clubs.

Burnleys keeper shirt is weird, it is so dark you can hardly tell the keeper from the outfield players.

“Each Goalkeeper must wear colours that distinguish him from the other players, the Referee and the Assistant Referees”

Ok it is technically a different colour (very dark green as opposed to black for the outfield players) but I would say it is borderline if it breaks the rules.

Ottawa – yes, which is why I think your post was ludicrous and made no sense. If Spurs have a “terrible team”, then what would you call all of the teams from 5-20th?? Some have been slagging off Man Utd all season and they’re in 3rd now, meanwhile Liverpool are resurgent. We’ve got to beat good teams to get top 4, not terrible teams.

Personally I strongly dislike 4 of the big 6 (not fussed about Arsenal or Chelsea especially) but I would admit they all have decent squads and more depth than we do.

Ultimately though I think Spurs are the team we will replace in the big 6, hopefully starting this season. They are the weekest link…goodbye!!

I don’t see the issue in liking the way other teams play. Arsenal play beautiful football, Brighton are excellent, Chelsea are playing much better, Man City are inevitable, Liverpool have historically played a great brand of intense football that seems to be faltering now.

Odd that some seem to think that being a Newcastle United fan somehow precludes you from commenting on the quality of other teams, or (god forbid) enjoying the way other teams play football.

Ottawa – I’ll state my opinion on any team if it’s a topic. Clearly, we’re going to be talking more about the clubs challenging us for 3/4th, which is Man Utd, Spurs, and Liverpool. I said at the beginning of the season that they have better squads and I still think they have better squads. Same goes for Chelsea and obviously the top 2 too.

For me, that makes it so much sweeter that we’re beating Chelsea soundly, ahead of Liverpool, and only just behind Spurs with a couple of games in hand. If we were sitting behind Brighton or Brentford, then I’d be disappointed!

I can’t stand Chelsea as a club and also got frustrated with the entitled nature of some Liverpool and Man Utd fans. Spurs are funny for being Spursey and I wonder how man Man City fans are glory hunters. Don’t really have an issue with Arsenal though, really loved watching them play in the Wenger years.

So, plenty of things I don’t like about those clubs. Doesn’t mean I can’t respect their strengths.

Do you and TDS spend a lot of time together. I never said you couldn’t say something positive about another team. I said the constant praise for those 3 clubs is an aggravation. Note the two words “constant” and “praise”.
