Newcastle have departed to Dubai for a warm-weather training camp after the 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest on Friday. The international break has come at a good time with many Magpies struggling with injury concerns.
The latest casualty is Miguel Almiron who suffered a thigh injury in training. The Athletic is reporting that Almiron will be lost for six weeks with the injury. Newcastle will have to soldier on through a congested April without their leading goalscorer.
Eddie Howe spoke on the injury concerns plaguing his squad after yesterday’s victory. He revealed that Allan Saint-Maximin was withdrawn at halftime with a tight hamstring. He also touched on why he didn’t introduce Callum Wilson in the second half saying:
“Allan wasn’t quite right today, physically, I didn’t think. He’s been carrying a tight hamstring. I don’t think it’s a pull, it’s just a little bit of tightness. For me, it was obvious during that first half that he probably wouldn’t be able to carry on.
“I didn’t want to expose Callum today, he hasn’t done a lot of training, so I decided to go with Elliot and he repaid me, he did really well. Hopefully, we’ll have Callum and Maxi fit and available after the international break.
“Fabian’s been carrying lots of different things in the last few weeks. He’s been carrying a foot problem and also had concussion, so I think it’s just a chance for him to rest his body and go again.”
Fabian Schar took a nasty challenge in the opening minutes yesterday but was able to see out the match. The defender has been a warrior this season and pulled out of the Swiss squad to get some rest for a lingering foot problem.
For Wilson, he’s struggled with illness numerous times this season. Howe added that he is also carrying some muscle tightness so it makes sense he stuck with Alexander Isak to the end at the City Ground.
He is some more from Howe on Wilson:
“He [Wilson] had a small bout of illness and then just a little bit of tightness, general tightness, no injury.
“But with Callum, I think we have to be very careful with him and make sure he’s available for the rest of the season.
“Callum’s a top professional. And he is driven more than anybody that I’ve ever worked with, so he will see Alex performing as he has done tonight and he’ll be delighted for Alex and the team.
“But it’ll only make his resolve even stronger to fight for that place.”
Hopefully, for the massive match against Manchester United at St. James’ Park after the break Howe will only be without Emil Krafth and Almiron. Getting Anthony Gordon, Wilson, Saint-Maximin, and Schar fully fit for April could be key.

You’ll be a happy lad tonight.
Can’t believe how gobby England players are as if they’re on steroids, reminiscent of ManU players

Comment #43It was great to see EA step up yesterday and have a huge impact on the game. Hopefully, he becomes another option on the left if he keeps it up.

Comment #48Davas agreed it was EA best outing by far and the first time he has shown real signs of quality in a Toon shirt, long may it continue.
If we can get Dean0 to post that EA will never make it at NUFC every time he comes on we could be onto a real winner!

Didn’t direct anything at you fella so perhaps you need to stop taking things so personally? I was making a broad point that it’s perfectly acceptable to enjoy the way other teams play football. If you see that as some sleight on you then that’s on you buddy.

I think he’s looked better the last couple of times. Maybe injury free now and not trying to do too much. Pity he slipped at a crucial time when he made that great run.

Comment #52Good win for our lads. Plucky performance from England who were down to 14 men for much of the game who made it tricky for us but we got the job done.
Now if we could finally manage to get past the QF of the World Cup that’ll be pretty sweet

Comment #56What an amazing last few days, St Pats, The Toon beating a bunch of thugs, Spurs draw, Ireland grand slam.
It’s like happy birthday presents, may have to go sit in the Sauna and sweat out some of yesterdays fluid and hit the town for round two.
Shame about Miggy, may miss six weeks.
Well Murphy has shown some great play, big Joe back, EA looked good when he came on yesterday, all is good.

Comment #57Davas, you may have a point both in terms of injury and I felt when he first got game time he was almost trying too hard, which is understandable given his age, the fact he is local and his lack of experience at this level.
The more he gets used to the weight of a B&W shirt the better he is likely to become and yesterday will have done wonders for his confidence.

Comment #58It’s utterly impossible to get Johnny Sexton emotional, the interviewer was trying his best to get him to break or get a tear, interviewed for his last game in the 6 nations, won grand slim forbade first time on home soil and he still didn’t budge.
I’d be crying my eyes out, how does he hold it together lol.

Comment #63He will walk to 60 goals on all competitions this season. That wasn’t the discussion when they signed him. It was could he get 60 goals in the Premier league alone and vbeat Dixie Deans record of 60 in one top flight season( I.e league only)

No poke at anyone at all. Merely a comment on how it’s normal as football fans to have opinions on the quality of football other teams play. It’s a Saturday evening, results have gone our way so far this weekend, so life’s good.

Bruno and Joelinton both won more balls back than Longstaff, especially Joelinton double of Longstaff. They even win Longstaff in the attacking department slightly with Willock leading ahead by a bit. Consider the amount of work Joelinton and Bruno is doing defensively and offensively. Willock and Longstaff’s offensive numbers should be higher.

Comment #78Have a few minutes on the ground and just watched the end of the chelsea/Everton match.
Nice to see Spurs only come away with a point. Still wouldn’t mind see Everton go down but a point doesn’t do much for them with the bottom 9 teams all within 3 points and nice to see Chelsea lose the win at home. All is good going into the break…except maybe Miggy.

Comment #80Told ya, as soon as some say these teams turned the corner, they drop points again. Forgot who said, it’s even harder to play relegation battling teams as the season goes by. Is it Alex Ferguson?
