Newcastle’s Excellent Performance Gets Well-Deserved Three Points

It was far from easy but Newcastle have picked up a second straight 2-1 victory downing Nottingham Forest at the daunting City Ground last night. The performance was excellent with two goals from Alexander Isak enough to take the three points, but just barely.

Elliot Anderson had his dream shattered by a controversial VAR ruling. The Geordie came on in the second half for Allan Saint-Maximin, who is reportedly injured. The 20-year-old provided an instant spark in his best performance for his hometown club.

That performance should have been topped with a match-winning maiden goal. However, the referee was called on to review Sean Longstaff’s role in the buildup. It was ruled that Felipe wasn’t in control when his attempted clearance was deflected by Longstaff.

Justice prevailed as Newcastle won a penalty which Isak coolly dispatched into the net. The Swede was outstanding scoring in added time at the end of both halves with his first strike a moment of class.

Barring the VAR debacle, this was an excellent match of football with Newcastle putting in an entertaining display. The result had a lot riding on it with Forest just 2 points above the bottom three.

There were plenty of borderline challenges, gamesmanship, and class on offer. Former Magpie Jonjo Shelvey put in an excellent performance for his new club and didn’t skirt any of his duals.

The three points are what Newcastle need heading into the international break which arrives in a timely manner. Next up is a critical showdown against Manchester United. The hope is Miguel Almiron, Anthony Gordon, and Miguel Almiron are available.

If not, Anderson could get just his second league start. It would be well-deserved. But for Isak’s exploits, the local lad put in a Man of the Match display with VAR’s cruelty momentarily delaying his dream of scoring for Newcastle United.

Anybody know why we play long corners?
We have three great big centre backs who stand in the middle of the box and never win a header far less score a goal
Somebody needs to tell they need to meet the ball and not wait for the ball to land on their head. It won’t.
I suppose the fact that none of them looks like Tony Adams John Terry or Bruce explains a lot.

We’re going to get walloped off Ireland later on today.
It will be insufferable to read “you know who’s” posts after the match. He’ll be giving it large – on and on and on -till my ears burst.

Someone claimed last night that Eddie H was lucky to get a win last night. Those aren’t the words of a Newcastle fan and I definitely think we have troll infiltrators on the blog.

So, after wondering if SL was maybe offside when Bruno first played the ball through, it looks like he wasn’t. No way was he interfering with how the defender in the middle played the ball, he was concerned about the players around him and could have, for example, wellied it or put it out for a corner.

The law states ‘(if the) clearance by the player in control of the ball is inaccurate or unsuccessful, this does not negate the fact that the player ‘deliberately played’ the ball.’

I still can’t see how that was given as offside.

Only disappointment from last night was the official’s, i say it all the time, VAR and refs are wrecking the game by not knowing the law of the game and interpreting the rule to what ever they want them to mean.

Really feel sorry for Anderson, while Isak got all the headlines, Anderson looked a propper footballer, and has some bite to his game as well, it was a total joke for his goal to be disallowed.

I would love to say well at least we got the 3 points, yeh but that is this time, but VAR has cost us many points this season, and not just us mo’s of the other teams to, just not LiVARpool.

    It boils my pish

Does anyone know what the disagreement on the touchline was before half time between Eddie and Graeme Jones?
I’m guessing it might be related to Maxi’s injury which they knew about at the time. Maybe Jones wanted to sub him completely but Eddie moved him to the middle until half time when he was actually subbed.
I only ask because it’s the first time under Eddie that I’ve ever seen some disagreement of tension between staff in public.

He was in an inactive phase of play, it hit thier player and bounced to Longstaff, and he didn’t kick it, the Forrest player kicked of him.

    I’m lost

The ref and var did not know the rule.

What a great performance last night. We are dominant throughout the game. Pity we gifted them their goal. Botman is human after all and not a cyborg sent from the future lol.

I’m gutted for your Anderson, he rose like a salmon to nod home and show the others how to head home. Done by VAR yet again. It’s a concern as there are clear dark forces at work IMO. Are the powers that be not wanting any of their darling big 6 to drop out the top 4 (maybe?) The ref allowed our players to have lumps kicked out of them. When is a scissor kick from behind not a yellow? Shelvey was very lucky. The way he was playing had a straight red wrote all over it.

Anyway on we March to Europe. Up next is manure. Oh how I want to inflict some serious karma on them for the cup final defeat and their crap entitled plastic fans. I said before the wolves game I can see is going on a winning streak and can see us getting 9 points from our next 3 games. 6 out of 6, I can only see it being 9 out of 9 against the red scum. I’ve managed to get a ticket for that game and I can’t wait.

    Onwards and upwards

There were so many fouls which went unpunished last night; if only referees would do their job properly there wouldn’t need to be headlines like this!

” What ref told Jason Tindall as Nottingham Forest boss Cooper asked about Newcastle ‘whingebags’.”

He may of cost 63M but that could turn out to be chicken feed.

    Potts,

I don’t think it was a disagreement between EH and GJ. I think GJ was ranting to the 4th official or somebody else and EH was trying to calm it. Tindall and Cooper were called into the ref’s room and told to calm it all down.

We surely have the best travelling support in football!

” Incredible scenes in the City Ground after the game
The noise generated at the City Ground was simply incredible last night with both sets of fans getting credit for making the Friday night clash a real spectacle.

However, even more than half an hour after the final whistle Newcastle supporters stayed behind and celebrated a huge win.

The goalposts had been brought down and all of the Forest fans had left the stadium, but United fans chanted: “This is the best trip I’ve ever been on,” amid wild scenes.

Despite the three hours plus bus journey home, coach drivers were left waiting for fans eager to savour such an important win. The truth is, if Newcastle keep producing team spirit and performances like this, the club will be enjoying much more far away journeys than this in Europe next season.

I’ve Watched the offside goal, and I’m baffled.
They’ve took the basic rule, that deflection is not playing on, and in trying to describe it writing, have completely confused the situation.

Agree with Davas about the Jones and Howe apparent argument. When watching I could see the 4th official turn around a few times.

Think Jones and Tindall were angry about the challenges flying in, so likely Jones was angry at the 4th official and Howe was trying to defuse the situation.

Howe is always so calm and professional, it’s great to see as it means hes always just focused on trying to get the results.

Also, who said he has no plan B? Swapped Isak wide and he scored, brought Anderson on at half time and he changed the game. He has many plans and tactical changes don’t you worry 🙂

What utter rubbish how they have tried to explain the disallowed goal ! The VAR were simply looking for any reason they could to disallow it and came up with that !

Now the big question, do I go out again to meet the boys down Tynemouth for the Rugby ?

Where is Toon Polls when you need him 🙂

Great result last night, just brilliant.

Just waiting for him to get right back on it 9/10 and we will blow teams away.

The VAR technology again is not the problem. 99% of the problem with VAR are the referees, as you put it, who don’t seem to know the laws of the game and still work to protect each other. Also, the Match Referee can disagree with the VAR.

That said, where is Howard Webb on match days? Is there not a supervisor of referees and where do they go on match day? Certainly that “Head of Officiating” should be in the VAR command centre and can advise the VAR and the match officials when they incorrectly interpret and apply the laws DURING the match and not just write the apology statement days later.
